With it being so close to Halloween we thought a themed Quiz would be a good idea and barman Chris, respelendant in shocking orange wig and fairly gruesome make up looked the part as he handed out the Pic Quiz and the Answer Sheets. The 43 quizzers who turned out for Quiz 46 took the total prize on offer to a spooktacular £144. Game on!
We limited the teams to a maximum of six this week as a team of eleven members in Quiz 45 was pushing it a bit when we have teams of just two and three competing... we all like a fair Quiz don't we? So it was straight into the picture round then with Witch Movie? Yes that old classic, witches in films and there ain't as many as you might think. Most of them were easy enough but there were a couple of devilishly difficult ones.
At just after nine Quiz Master John got off his broomstick and we were up and running with the General Knowledge round. As we said all of the rounds questions had a Halloween theme (albeit a slightly tenuous link with some of them).
The Pic Round returned some great scores, no team got 100% but there was a very impressive 11 from 12 for Attack Of The Killer Seagull and four teams with tens, our American friends Team Ramrod, The Nation of Quizlam Featuring Harry Lang (surely they will run out of new members soon?), Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang and Two Girls. The rest of the teams did quite well with eights through to sixes.
The General Knowledge returned some excellent results with five teams getting every single spooky question right! Congratulations to Tony Hart is a Play Do Phile (great team name), Where's Humble? (who eventually turned up), She and Him (stunning score guys!), The Nation of Quizlam Featuring Harry Lang and Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang. A further three teams got nines, Devils In Disguise, Attack Of The Killer Seagull and Two Girls.
One of the questions asked in General Knowledge was Which seaside town features in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, Dracula? The answer from one of our obviously literary challenged teams (or were they taking the piss?)... 'North Shields'!
The scores made it a very close Quiz at the end of round one with three teams in the joint lead on 20, Attack Of The Killer Seagull, The Nation of Quizlam Featuring Harry Lang and Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang. Two Girls were just behind on 19 and two teams, Tony Hart is a Play Do Phile and She and Him were hanging on in there with 18. It was looking close, here's a sample of the fiendishly hard General Knowledge questions…
8. What do you call a noisy or disruptive type of ghost that moves things?
10. On which historical figure was Bram Stoker's Dracula said to have been based?
Music with a Halloween twist was next. There was a lot of oldie stuff in this but hey there's been no good halloween songs for years! Most teams did well though, tops with eight we had Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang, then there were four teams in second with seven, Tony Hart is a Play Do Phile, They Look The Same To Me, Two Girls (outstanding score!) and Idiots Don't Know Which, Witch Is Which (any of you guys thought of being a copywriter?). This gave the leader board a frightening twist, we now had Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang on 28 two points ahead of Attack Of The Killer Seagull, The Nation of Quizlam Featuring Harry Lang and Two Girls on 26. The rest of the teams were struggling with total scores from 25 for Tony Hart is a Play Do Phile down to 16 for the aptly named Confused.com. The leaders were pulling away - are you surprised after getting questions like this right?
13. In The Rocky Horror Show, which dance are we urged to do, again and again?
17. The song Zombies was released by which Irish rock band in 1994?
Half time and snacks. This week we had sweet rather than savoury, with little chocolate fancies in a sort of Halloween wrapping. Nice touch but the writers a savouries man who can't get excited about chocolate… bring back the peanuts! The teams enjoyed them though and after topping up on beers, nicotine and chocolate it was time for the 'Halloween' Sports Round!
Now this took some researching and yes, tenuous would aptly describe some of the questions, but it was a valiant attempt at keeping the Halloween theme going! It was a horror of a round though. The best score was an unbelievable eight from ten, this is all the more impressive when you see that the next best teams score was six, then six teams with fours and four with threes. Well done Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang, truly amazing that they only dropped two points in this round, especially with obscure All Hallows Eve (?) nonesense like this:
21. Name of the top Italian football referee who has an uncanny resemblance to one of the goulish characters from the horror film The Hills Have Eyes?
30. Which national football team blamed their failure to qualify for the World Cup over 32 years on a curse that was placed upon them by a Witch Doctor in a 1970 Mexico Qualifying match against Rhodesia?
One round of ten Halloween themed questions left, TV and Films. In the lead with what looked like an unassailable 36 points on the board, courtesy mainly to their outstanding eights in both the Music and Sports round was Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang. They would have to be cursed to lose this six point advantage over their nearest rivals, The Nation of Quizlam Featuring Harry Lang on 30 and Tony Hart is a Play Do Phile, Attack Of The Killer Seagull, Two Girls and Idiots Don't Know Which, Witch Is Which all on a pretty respectable 29.
Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang did their level best to let their rivals back into it though, in the final round our leaders only returned a six from ten. Our valiant challengers Tony Hart is a Play Do Phile got an eight which pulled back two points but it wasn't enough, so Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang won the Quiz with an impressive 42 from just 52 questions. In the final round we did have some more difficult questions like:
35. Who played Sherlock Holmes in the 1959 Hammer Horror classic The Hound of The Baskervilles?
40. "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" is a critically-acclaimed and very popular animated halloween television special based on a comic strip by which American cartoonist?
The shy and reserved Shona from team Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang came up to the bar to draw the envelope. If you don't know the drill there's three envelopes for the winner, one has food vouchers in it, one has beers and the final one has the cash. Shona decisively chose the left of the three envelopes and tore it open…
CASH, fantastic, £144 for the deserved winners Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang. The team divided the cash spoils and then very graciously put £24 back into the pot for next week for which they received a deserved round of applause.
42. Do You Want To Be In My Gang, My Gang
37. Tony Hart is a Play Do Phile 36. The Nation of Quizlam Featuring Harry Lang
35. Two Girls
34. Idiots Don't Know Which, Witch Is Which / She and Him / Attack Of The Killer Seagull
33. Where's Humble? / They All Look The Same To Me
32. Devils In Disguise
29. Team Ramrod
While Shona had been choosing the massive cash prize barman Chris had been handing out the mini yellow post-its for the Wild Card Question where for one pound entry you get one question and the closest to the numerical answer gets the entire cash in the pot. There was 21 people decided to chance their arm for the closest answer to the following Halloween flavoured question:
Every October in Half Moon Bay, California they have a giant pumpkin contest. This years winner was Thad Starr from Oregon, who has already won the competition twice before but this year he surpassed his previous record by 71 pounds.
Tonights Wild Card Question is, in pounds, how much did Thad’s giant pumpkin weigh?
There were a couple of quizzers who had to be shuffled along to get their answers in tonight, one of them was apparently using 'maths' to work out their answer. Eventually everyone was in and Quiz Master John announced the best guess was 1,232 and the winner as Drew… there was a bit of confusion as Brendan went to claim the money knowing he had won because of the number but Drew? All became clear when we looked at the name on his post it, now we all know doctors have bad handwriting but dentists? If you look closely and squint it does nearly say Bren! Anyway well done Brendan, not a bad return for a quid.
Laugh of the night: following one of Shona's many loud outbursts, Quiz Master John replies "Shona want's to compere the quiz next week, without a microphone!" then following a slight pause "From her house!". Well she does shall we say, project her voice well. Well done though Shona, you had the last laugh as you won, so apparently the drinks are on you next week?
Thanks to you all for coming to the Halloween Quiz it was a giggle. We hope to see you all again for Quiz 47 which won't have any themed questions (thank goodness).
