A very windy November night didn't deter seven quiz teams from turning out for Quiz Night 49. The 24 quizzers involved didn't get the total prize money on offer to the magic £100 we were hoping for but it made the night a more intimate occasion and there was still a humungous £88 up for grabs.

The picture round this week was famous brothers, surnames only required but for the well known act you got a point for the stage name plus a point if you knew the real surname.

Brothers in arms... but what was the surname?

We kicked off a little after nine with the standard General Knowledge round. Most teams found this a tad 'challenging' this week, best scores being just 7 from the ten on offer from The nation Of Quizlam Featuring Sam Whitely, Shona Ameobi, We're The Idiots Get Us Out Of Here and How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed? There was a six from She and Him and the other two teams posted half marks. There were some real difficult questions though, what do you think?

6. What London landmark was built to house the Great Exhibition in 1851 and later burnt down in 1936?
8. What was the pioneering ocean documenterer Jacques Cousteau’s boat called?

In the picture round a couple of teams did tremendously well, We're The Idiots Get Us Out Of Here and How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed? getting 12 from a possible 13. This is quite outstanding considering hardly any of either teams were over 30 yet some of the brothers pictured were from 1910, the 30's and 50's… well up on historical imagery? Maybe, but well done!

Going into round two on Music this gave us We're The Idiots Get Us Out Of Here and How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed? in the lead with 19 followed by Shona Ameobi on 17 and The nation Of Quizlam Featuring Sam Whitely on 16.

Last week we had calls for more 60's music trivia, so there were three 60's based questions tonight, did this help the teams in question, here's some samples…

14. Who caused uproar at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 by daring to play an electric guitar?
18. Which guitarist / singer was a member of the Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, Cream and Blind Faith?

Shona Ameobi did very well in the Music round with a brilliant 9 from the 10 on offer. There were creditable 8's from Where's The Bloke At The Bar and How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed? and 7's from She and Him and We're The Idiots Get Us Out Of Here. This gave us a leader board going into snacks looking like this, in the lead we had How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed? on 27 but just one point behind we had Shona Ameobi and We're The Idiots Get Us Out Of Here tied on 26. The rest of the teams were floundering now, the closest four points behind. Going into snacks it already looked like a battle between three teams.

Less teams = more snacks. A nonesense equation really when the same amount of savouries for a lot of teams gets devoured in a quicker time by less teams... but that's what happened! Nuts, bacon rashers and the like disappeared at a rapid rate, got to be worth the £1 entrance fee alone, never mind the possibility of winning some money as well.

When not necking the free savouries our quiz teams had the obligitory smoke or got the beers in depending on the individual persuasion and then it was into the famed Sports Round. Which of our three leaders would be stumped in this sporting trivia fest!

23. How many players take part in a Gaelic Football match?
29. What sport is played with stones and brooms?

It was a close round, Shona Ameobi and How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed? galloped in as joint winners with an outstanding 9 from 10. The nation Of Quizlam Featuring Sam Whitely and Where's The Bloke At The Bar were both second on 8's and third we had We're The Idiots Get Us Out Of Here who were the fall guys from the leader board on 7 along with Quiz Kamara.

Into the final TV and Film round and this was the state of play, tops on 36 we had How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed? then Shona Ameobi on 35 and We're The Idiots Get Us Out Of Here three off pole position on 33. So it looked like it was between How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed? and Shona Ameobi. We're The Idiots Get Us Out Of Here were still in with a shout should the other two leaders drop three points but that looked unlikely, especially with questions like this!

32. What 1995 crime film about a serial killer starred Brad Pitt and won the MTV Award for best movie that year?
40. If Richard Whiteley had not done Countdown he would probably have been most famous for being bitten by an animal on TV. What kind of animal bit him?

Film and TV proved decisive, Shona Ameobi crashed and burned with a poor 5 but How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed? took the round with a creditable 8 and won the quiz with 44 from a possible 53 this week. A round of applause ensued and Team Member Robin volunteered to pick one of the three envelopes on offer. Being the cool guy Robin is he just sauntered up and picked the top envelope without hesitation from Barman Chris. He opened it but due to lack of glasses couldn't read what he had won so gave the slip of paper to Chris to read out… he had only drawn the £83 cash! Another round of applause for the cash winners How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed? who being the gentlemen they are immediately returned £28 to go into the pot as a starter for next weeks quiz, well done guys.

Final Scores:
44. How Long Till The Chuckle Brothers Are Outed?
40. Shona Ameobi
39. We're The Idiots Get Us Out Of Here
35. The nation Of Quizlam Featuring Sam Whitely
34. Where's The Bloke At The Bar
31. She and Him / Quiz Kamara

Chris the Barman had been busy, immediately after the prize draw he was hot footing it around the place with our signature yellow post it's for the Wild Card Question which was open to anyone in the bar. Great way to win a pocketful of dosh, £1 gets a post it, one obscure question is asked that has a date or numerical answer and the person in the bar that gets the closest to that number is the winner of all the cash in the Wild Card kitty. One major rule, as with all of the quiz, no googling! There was £23 up for grabs this week and the question went as follows…

In the Sports Knowledge round we asked which player at the start of the 2012/13 season holds the record for greatest number of Premiership appearances? It was of course Ryan Giggs of Manchester United who has played over 600 games in the Premier League to date and over 900 matches in total for the Red Devils if you include Cup Competitions and European Games.

The Wild Card Question tonight is how many goals has Ryan Giggs scored to date during his professional career?

Silence, all we could hear were brains wheezing with goals to game ratios. Obviously somebody didn't get that concept as an answer came in of nearly as many goals as games! The rest were fairly close with a couple of people within ten of the actual figure we wanted.

The winner with only the second exact answer we have had in 49 Wild Cards was our good friend from the team of Idiots, Gary. Great win Gary (we are all chuffed), his Idiots team comes every week and this is now the third time one of them has won the Wild Card, they also won the quiz with a spectacular triumph in Quiz 42 way back at the start of October.

So that was it, a quiet Quiz this week but Shona may well be back for the big Quiz 50. John signed off and we all had a few more beers. Thanks to all of you who turned out for Quiz 49 and we do hope you come back for the half century next time.
