A packed house for Quiz 47, 34 people in nine teams ready to battle it out on a chilly Fireworks Night for the £60 grand prize.
We kicked off a little after nine with a topical Name the US Presidents Picture Round and got straight into our ten General Knowledge questions.
We had some excellent scores in the Picture Round which was quite difficult considering we are on the other side of the pond. I'm sure our American Friends Team Ramrod would have got 100% but they weren't in tonight so the congratulations go to The Nation of Quizlam featuring 'We Know What You Did Last Monday' (is this the longest quiz team name ever? Thank god for copy and paste!), Quiz Team Formerly Known As Magicians Nephew, Pound For The Idiots and Where The F*@$! Michaela? who all got 11 from 12. We Need Googz clearly didn't as they got a respectable 10 and the brilliantly named Sunderland's At Butlins – We Are Going To Brugge returned a reasonable 9 along with The Bulmernaters.
The General Knowledge proved a slightly stiffer challenge for our teams however, with the highest score of nine going to our appropriately named team Thank You Random Bloke At The Bar, who benefitted from said random bloke at the bar, who wasn't in the quiz but helpfully furnished team Thank You Random Bloke At The Bar with at least four correct answers whilst getting his round in!
The rest of the teams struggled with sixes and below – random bloke needs to enter the quiz methinks? This put Thank You Random Bloke At The Bar in the joint lead on 17 along with Quiz Team Formerly Known As Magicians Nephew and Where The F*@$! Michaela? In second we had The Nation of Quizlam featuring 'We Know What You Did Last Monday' on 16 (what did we do last Monday? Intrigued) with We Need Googz and The Bulmernaters on 15. It was quite a tough General Knowledge round, here's some examples:
6. The Gharial (or Gavial), found in India is what kind of animal?
8. What does a heliologist study?
So it was quite close going into round two, Music. In this round the random bloke at the bar didn't help our friends Thank You Random Bloke At The Bar but that didn't matter as they were obviously music aficionados and managed the top score of 9 from 10. Trailing in their wake for the round was Where The F*@$! Michaela? on 8 and four teams on 7, She and Him, Pound For The Idiots, We Need Googz and Sunderland's At Butlins – We Are Going To Brugge. A variety of decades in this weeks music:
17. Which TV comedians had a hit record in the 1970s called The Funky Gibbon?
18. What colour Lamborghini does Katy Perry drive in the video for ‘Waking Up in Vegas’
It was getting very close at the top going into the savouries. Leading with 26 we had Thank You Random Bloke At The Bar, then on 25 we had Where The F*@$! Michaela? and on 22 Quiz Team Formerly Known As Magicians Nephew and We Need Googz.
The half time break brought us the usual delicious free savouries, frazzles, peanuts and what looked like Pom Bears but that observation may be wrong as they went pretty quick. Some quizzers had a nicotine break instead and the rest did the sensible thing and got the beers in!
Into the Sports Round which usually sorts the men from the boys. The 'men' in this round were We Need Googz who obviously don't as they managed a magnificent 9 from 10 in a round with some quite hard questions. Second in the round we had Where The F*@$! Michaela? and on 8 and third, get this… She and Him on 7 (outstanding) along with Sunderland's At Butlins – We Are Going To Brugge. The rest of the teams got six and below with leaders Thank You Random Bloke At The Bar returning a disappointing 5. Was Sport a little easier this week?
21. In Ostrich racing do the birds race on their own or do they carry jockeys?
23. Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the 2011 Ballon d’Or prize – for which team does the player that came 2nd play for?
Interesting point was raised for one of the answers in Sport by Richard from team Where The F*@$! Michaela? He argued that a Speedway bike has no gears, their answer to 'How many gears does a speedway bike have?' was 'None apart from drive' for which they got no point. However, researching the question had given answers of one fixed gear and single gear so you would assume one as how can you drive a machine that hasn't a single gear? This point could have been crucial but we'll leave it up for discussion, answers by email or comment at the bottom of the page.
So very interesting going into the final round. Top of the pile now were Where The F*@$! Michaela? on 33, joint second we had Thank You Random Bloke At The Bar and We Need Googz on 31 and then four teams on 27. So barring some ridiculously low scores by the top three the prize was a fight between them.
Final Round Film & TV. Sunderland's At Butlins – We Are Going To Brugge did really well with an eight from ten to give them a total of 35 for the night but second in the round and therefore winners on the night we had Where The F*@$! Michaela? who scored seven to give them an unbeatable 40. Challengers Thank You Random Bloke At The Bar and We Need Googz crashed and burned with just five a piece. Some sample TV & Film Questions:
36. Which married couple were the creators of Fireball XL5, Stingray, and Thunderbirds, among others?
39. Who directed the the classic war film ‘Apocalypse Now’?
A thoroughly deserved round of applause for Where The F*@$! Michaela?, a team of two regulars Richard and Phil who were also part of the team that won the charity Quiz last Thursday. Well done guys that's two in a row. Barman Chris presented Richard with the three envelopes, one containing £60, one food vouchers and the other beers. Richard didn't hesitate and went for the right of the three on offer and it was the 'right' one to go for as it contained the £60 cash! Congratulations to Richard and Phil from Where The F*@$! Michaela?, great win.
Being the gentleman they are £20 went back into the pot for next weeks quiz, thanks guys.
40. Where The F*@$! Michaela?
36. We Need Googz / Thank You Random Bloke At The Bar
35. Sunderland's At Butlins – We Are Going To Brugge
32. The Nation of Quizlam featuring 'We Know What You Did Last Monday' / Quiz Team Formerly Known As Magicians Nephew / She and Him
31. Pound For The Idiots / The Bulmernaters
Exciting stuff. Barman Chris didn't stop there though as while Where The F*@$! Michaela? were celebrating he had been busy getting the Post Its out for the Wild Card. One pound entry, one obscure question with a numerical answer and closest to the number gets the whole prize but as with the whole quiz, No Googling!
In the General Knowledge round we asked what mountain system the Blue Ridge Mountains belonged to. The answer was the Appalachians in north east America and the highest mountain in that range is Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet.
There is a very steep trail up the mountain called the Mount Mitchell hike which takes you right to the peak. The Wild Card Question tonight is not how long is this trail but how many feet does the trail rise from the start to the finish?
Took a few repeats to get everyone clear to what we were asking but that's understandable, there was £25 up for grabs.
Once the Post Its were all in Quiz Master John read out several that were close but then confirmed that Stephen from team Thank You Random Bloke At The Bar had got the closest with his answer of 3,742 feet. After a round of applause for Stephen he happily picked up his £25, not a bad return on a night out having a laugh at The Colly Quiz!
That was it, Quiz 47 was concluded with a "Good Night and God Bless" from Quiz Master John. It was another good one, great crack and that's what Quiz Night's all about at The Colly, having a fun Monday night out. Thanks to all who turned in, we hope to see you next week for Quiz 48.
