Quiz 37 summed up why we do this Quiz, because it's a laugh! It's a good night out and it's great to see a good crowd in The Colly on a Monday night having a bit of banter. We had seven teams in total, six of which were regular quiz teams (a warm welcome to The Nation of Quizlam in their first Colly Quiz) and it turned out to be a very exciting competition, just what is needed on what would be an otherwise boring Monday night.
There was a Jesmond residents meeting about the recent floods which put the start time back a bit but it wasn't a problem, we just watched Everton beating Man United on the big screens, which most people really enjoyed, and got the quiz underway around 9:15pm.
In celebration of the new Premier League Season (let's face it we've been starved of televised sport over the summer haven't we?) the pic quiz was recognise the Premier League Club Badges. We thought was really easy and obviously the teams agreed with four of them getting 12 from 12 scores! The General Knowledge provided a little more of a challenge however with top marks being just five from ten. Here's a couple of samples:
2. In France, what is a TGV?
5. What type of creature is the Hawaiian honeycreeper?
Going into Music we had She and Him, New Idiot, Same Result and Ba Ba Back fighting it out for first place with 17's a piece followed by the new team, The Nation of Quizlam on 16 and Floody Hell and When is the Geordie Shore Lot In? (great name) on 15. Music was a good round for those of the 'older' generation and that showed in the results with When is the Geordie Shore Lot In? getting a commendable 9 from 10, Ba Ba Back, Got No Brains getting 8s and Floody Hell getting a 7. Our new team, The Nation of Quizlam struggled with a 3, understandable, as I think the 70s and 80's were a bit before their time, valiant effort though lads, we think you need an 'older' team member though to cope with this round! Here's a couple of oldie questions…
12. Who released a 1979 album 'Eat To The Beat'?
15. Which famous model tried to embark on a career in music when she released the single ‘Oh Yeah’ in 1999?
Class heckling from Richard, the normally impeccable Quiz Master John had fluffed when asking a question, the word should have been 'Deaf', he managed to get 'Deal' somehow and trying to correct the question went on for ages… Time and time again John tried to tell everyone 'Deaf' and eventually Richard clarified it succinctly… Deaf, as in Leppard! No ambiguity there then, great stuff.
Half time snacks were on the way with Ba Ba Back in the lead on 25, closely followed by When is the Geordie Shore Lot in? on 24 and New Idiot, Same Result on 23. Bacon Rashers, Onion Rings, Salt and Vinegar Sticks and Peanuts beckoned.
After a beer top up, smokes for those who do and a variety of free and filling snacks it was onto everyones favourite round, Sport. This week New Idiot, Same Result outdid themselves with a perfect 10 in sport, unbelievable… obviously the new members to their team were sport officianado's so fair play. This catapulted them into second place in the quiz on 33. Ba Ba Back had a 9 so retained top spot on 34 with Got No Brains who also returned an excellent 9 tying with Floody Hell who got a decent 8 (in the round) in third place on 30. Not much in it going into TV and Films. Here's a couple of Sports questions:
27. Colin Jackson is a famous British athlete. Which discipline is his claim to fame?
30. Between 1996 and 2002, which Italian striker played in the Premiership for Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Bradford, Derby County and, finally, a loan period at Middlesbrough, before returning to Italy?
So, this was it, final round with just four points separating four teams, TV and Films. Winners of the round were She and Him and New Idiot, Same Result with 9 from 10… Ba Ba Back got an 8 along with newcomers The Nation of Quizlam which meant joint winners of the quiz with 42 points from a possible 53 were Ba Ba Back and New Idiot, Same Result - so that meant a Dart Off! What a fantastic finale. Here's a couple of the TV and Film questions:
32. What were the surnames of the animators who created Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones and Scooby Doo?
40. Who played the character of Baldrick in the Black Adder comedy series?
It's been a while since we had a Dart Off (pics coming soon), the game plan was simple, six darts each, thrown in two sets of three, highest score wins. The teams hurriedly sorted their dart champions and first up was New Idiot, Same Result, who started off with a massive 63 from his first three darts, including a treble. Team Ba Ba Back's man confidently stepped up to the ockey but just managed a 56. Second round and New Idiot, Same Result's chap managed a 39, not a great three darts but under intense pressure and it took the team to a total of 102. Ba Ba Back needed 57 from three darts to win, after two darts they were 21 from victory, they needed a double or bull to win but the tension was too much and the dart missed the board! Tragedy for Ba Ba Back but elation for New Idiot, Same Result.
Now all New Idiot, Same Result had to do was pick the right envelope to win the £85 cash.
Three envelopes on offer, Cash, Beers or Food what would Idiots choose? Stalwart quiz entrants from week one, never won it…
they only went and picked the middle envelope which had the cash!
Fantastic, we are over the moon for our regular quizzers Idiots, we think we can only remember them missing a couple of quizzes over the entire 37 so they deserve a win. After dividing up the cash Idiots put £20 back into the pot for next weeks quiz – what a thoroughly nice bunch of folks.
42. Team Ba Ba Back / New Idiot Same
Result 37: Floody Hell
36: When is the Geordie Shore Lot in? / Got No Brains
35. She and Him
33. The Nation of Quizlam
Next up after all that excitement was the Wild Card. £1 a person, one question (as in the Quiz absolutely no Googling) and closest to the numerical answer gets the whole pot of cash. This week there was £24 to play for, here's the question:
To celebrate the start of the Premier League Season, the picture round this week was identifying Club Badges. The premier league began in 1992 and to the end of last season there had been a total of 7,846 games played over the 20 seasons since it started. The Colly Quiz Wild Card question tonight is what is the total number of goals scored in the Premier League up to the end of last season?
You could hear the brain cells crunching the numbers, 7,846 games, an average of how many goals a game? Then the answers started to flood in. There were two people with 20,000 one with 20,001 (!) but the winner, for the second week in a row (a first in the Wild Card) was our regular Robin who was just 88 out from the actual answer. A big round of applause for Mr H as he gleefully accepted the cash, what a result!
That was it, Quiz 37 done and dusted, well done Idiots and Mr H both big cash winners on the night. We look forward to seeing you all again next week on Bank Holiday Monday for Quiz Night 38.
Apologies to Sarah, she correctly spotted a question that we had used before in the sports round, what a memory though it was from Quiz 20! We do try to check each question hasn't been used before on our database but that one slipped through.
