Well the weather wasn't quite as Siberian as our clueless weathermen were predicting and even though there was a slight covering of snow that hadn't deterred our dedicated regulars from getting out on a wintry January Monday night for The Colly Quiz.

Just six teams and 25 hardy souls entered tonight but it was cosy, warm and fun. The Quiz kicked off a little later than usual due to the snowy conditions but the picture round was handed out as the frozen teams took their snow shoes off and put their hats and coats on the radiators. This week the question round was could you recognise the company from just one letter of the logo… quite a challenge.

Can you recognise the company from just one letter of it's logo?

As the rapidly thawing quiz teams contemplated the pics we got stuck into the opening ten General Knowledge questions.

The Picture Round proved quite a challenge, with the top score of ten from 12 for Don't You Think I Look Surprisingly Like Chris Tarrant?* closely followed by Harry Redknapp Is A Cock**, Uninspiring Idiots and She and Him on nine with Fingers Crossed For Snowday and D.G. Waffshack*** on eights.
*Hey somebody has to type this… short is sweet!
**Saggy faced tax dodger stole our striker… what a rotter!
***An anagram of the picture round but missing a C… nice try though!

General Knowledge wasn't that conclusive either as Harry Redknapp Is A Cock got top marks with 9, D.G. Waffshack 8 and Fingers Crossed For Snowday 7. Some hard questions, some easy:

4. Ishmael is the only survivor of the Pequod, following a fateful encounter with whom?
8. The Azores are part of which European country?

This gave us an early scoreboard looking like this, in the lead on 18 Harry Redknapp Is A Cock, joint second on 16,  Don't You Think I Look Surprisingly Like Chris Tarrant? with D.G. Waffshack and in joint third on 15, Uninspiring Idiots, Fingers Crossed For Snowday and She and Him.

So not much in it going into round two Music.

There were some winners and losers in the Music Round. You need a 'mix' of ages in your team (or a music officionado) to do well and obviously Uninspiring Idiots, Fingers Crossed For Snowday and D.G. Waffshack had the right mix as they all scored 8 from ten. Team Harry Redknapp Is A Cock were missing a key septugenarian (for the 'old' stuff) so they just got a 5 and the 'young' teams Don't You Think I Look Surprisingly Like Chris Tarrant? and She and Him did worse with 4's. The questions were okay if you had the right mix of ages:

16. With which pop duo would you associate Theresa Bazaar and David Van Day?
19. In the 70’s which group topped the charts with “I'm Not in Love”?

So going into half time snacks we had D.G. Waffshack icing the opposition on 24, Harry Redknapp Is A Cock, Uninspiring Idiots and Fingers Crossed For Snowday on 23, Don't You Think I Look Surprisingly Like Chris Tarrant? on 20 and She and Him on 19.

Missed snacks… there were peanuts involved apparently but after engaging in conversation the snacks had been decimated so a realistic review of the savouries is impossible. Feel free to enlighten in the comments box below, the tubs returned were empty so they must have been good!

Into what we used to think of as the make or break round, Sport. Recently we have had teams who traditionally found this difficult getting great results, is this because the Sport questions are getting lame or is it because the teams in question are getting better?

Top score in sport tonight was Uninspiring Idiots with 9… well done, tremendous score*. There are sports reporters in the opposition, say no more! Second in the round we had Harry Redknapp Is A Cock on 8 and the rest of the teams went downhill from there, including a certain sports reporters team on 6.
*Team member said that half the answers were guesses… well doesn't that make the result even better!

Some example sport questions:

25. How many laps must a driver complete to win the Indianapolis 500?
29. What was the nickname given to the famous boxing match between Mohammad Ali and Joe Frazier in 1975?

It was all to play for going into the final round, we had Uninspiring Idiots at the top of the piste with 32, just behind them Harry Redknapp Is A Cock on 31 and D.G. Waffshack on 30. It was all down to the last ten questions on TV and Films.

Unpresidented… in the last round five of the six teams got nine from ten. The losers in the round were She and Him who just managed a six (there are only two of them!). So that meant the leaders from the previous round, Uninspiring Idiots won the quiz just one point ahead of Harry Redknapp Is A Cock and two ahead of D.G. Waffshack on 39. The questions must have been easy?

35. What nationality was the apparently well endowed actor Errol Flynn?
40. Which 1979 Vietnam War movie starred Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall?

Uninspiring Idiots got a deserved round of applause for their third win after being almost ever present since the quiz started in November 2011. Great result but what about the winnings… team member Chris stepped up and confidently chose the middle envelope of the three presented by barmaid Micky. He ripped it open and announced 'Food Vouchers'… unlucky Chris but the choice of food is fantastic, probably better than sharing the £25 winnings to be honest. Anyway thats £25 rollover for next weeks quiz.

Final Scores:
41. Uninspiring Idiots
40. Harry Redknapp Is A Cock
39. D.G. Waffshack
36. Fingers Crossed For Snowday
35. Don't You Think I Look Surprisingly Like Chris Tarrant?
28. She and Him

Quiz Master John was a bit disappointed, no Dart Off after a close result like that, professional that he is though he didn't let that deter him and we went straight into the  Wild Card. £1, one question, no phones, closest answer wins. There was only £17 in the pot but for a £1 stake… The question tonight was:

In the General Knowledge round we asked the question “The Azores are part of which European country?” Almost in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean this remote archapelego of volcanic islands are of course part of Portugal. The Azores are some of the highest mountains on the planet if you measured them from their base deep in the Atlantic... but we aren’t going to ask you how high they are!

The Wild Card Question tonight is if you were to get on a plane at Newcastle International Airport tonight how many miles would you have to fly to reach the Azores?

Well there was a clue, there is a clue in the question most weeks (...almost in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?).

There was some crazy answers as always, 3,400 miles… that's nearly LA, 500 miles, that's around Paris. There were two that were within 70 miles though, Amy (wild card four time winner) had 1,723, just 63 miles out but John was just 60 miles out so took the £17 prize. The margin has never been so tight, hard lines Amy but well done John, beers on you?

Classic clue from Quiz Master John for question 16… "Ooooh I used to love 'em, one of my favourite bands… twice as good as 50 cent!".

That was it, Quiz 53 was brought to a close with Quiz Master John's usual "Good Night and God Bless". Thanks to everyone who turned out 'in the blizzards', The Colly really appreciates your support for the Quiz.
