The pub was jammed, there wasn't a stool or a seat free for Quiz 61. It may have been bitterly cold outside but the lure of a big cash prize had 12 teams and fifty quizzers descend on The Colly. This took the potential winnings to an eye watering and near record breaking £240 and it was so full we had one team turn up and leave as they couldn't get a seat! We'll get clip boards in for Quiz 62 so nobody misses out.
There was an air of excitement until the Picture Round went out and then there were groans… Name the Mr Men? Well last week it was Supermodels, this week Mr Men (the research took so much longer and was way more satisfying for Supermodels – anyway, enough of that).
What's wrong with Mr Men anyway? We all read the books as kids or those of us who are older read them to our kids, surely those bedtime stories registered something in the grey matter? Apparently not for some, a couple of teams did really, really badly but on the other hand some did very well. As we keep saying, the key to a good quiz team is a wide range of ages, we can't find Pic Rounds that will appeal to everyone so a range of interests and ages is a benefit to the team and with the amount of money on offer for this quiz it's worth bringing some younger/older team members!
General Knowledge was a bit tasty as well, there were a couple of real brain testers in there such as…
6. What is the capital city of the Australian state of Tasmania?
10. Which war began with the raising of the Royal Standard at Nottingham in 1642?
The upshot of the first couple of rounds were She & Him were Mr Men experts, getting a ridiculous 100% score of 12 from 12. McAndrew Got Chinned By A Mackem did very well just missing one to get 11 and A Broken Pencil Is Pointless and Quiz Park Rangers returned a ten. Bottom of the Mr Men heap were our happy smiley team at the bar The Wrong Charlie with four and our young friends E=MC Hammer on five. Lets have something less frivolous for Quiz 62's Picture Round for The Wrong Charlie, obscure works by 16th century Italian Masters anyone?
General Knowledge was a little more even with our teams returning between sixes and nines. Cock a hoop in this round were The Five Cocks with a very creditable nine, joint second A Broken Pencil Is Pointless and The Grass Is Greener with eights and six teams on seven, Mr Idiot, Mark Whitwortli & The Supremes, The Wrong Charlie, No Penang Style*, McAndrew Got Chinned By A Mackem and Quiz Park Rangers.
*Sorry guys the Penangs have been flying out this week, there will be more back in on Tuesday. The latest batch of Massamans are divine though – had one for lunch!
Going into Music that gave us an early leader board looking like this: three teams in pole on 18, She & Him, A Broken Pencil Is Pointless and McAndrew Got Chinned By A Mackem. Then three teams in second on 17, The Five Cocks, The Grass Is Greener and Quiz Park Rangers with Mr Idiot hanging in there with 16. Some teams did really well in Music, we thought they may struggle this week with questions of this calibre:
18. The bassist of which punk band is shown about to smash his instrument on the cover of the classic 1980 album London Calling?
20. What are twin sisters Monica and Gabriela Irimia better known as?
Top Music know all's in Quiz 61 were The Five Cocks who got top marks with ten. Second on creditable nines were She & Him, Mr Idiot and our happy Quizzers at the bar The Wrong Charlie. So going into the savouries our leader board had She & Him and The Five Cocks just in the lead on 27 from McAndrew Got Chinned By A Mackem on 26 and three teams on 25, Mr Idiot, A Broken Pencil Is Pointless and The Grass Is Greener.
It was close, a break was needed! Luckily we were at half time and the snacks on offer were delectable peanuts (a classic), salt and vinegar chipsticks (addictive) and the strangely shaped aeroplane snacks (but they do taste nice). The teams charged their glasses, topped up on nicotine and got themselves ready for the killer round… Sport.
Four teams did really well in Sport, five did okay and three didn't but how would that affect the leader board? Top Sports with nines went to Mark Whitwortli & The Supremes, McAndrew Got Chinned By A Mackem, Quiz Park Rangers and The Wrong Charlie (who were pulling themselves up by their bootstraps to get back into contention following their abysmal Mr Men Picture Round). In second we had current joint leaders The Five Cocks on eight and third on seven Mr Idiot and The Bullets but former joint leaders of Quiz 61 She & Him stuttered in sport with a five putting them back into third place. The Sports Questions this week weren't that difficult were they?
24. Which English boxer won an Olympic Gold Medal at Sydney 2000?
29. Who scored Arsenal’s only goal in their 2-1 Champions League final defeat to Barcelona in 2006?
Final Round Film & TV. Joint leaders after Sport were McAndrew Got Chinned By A Mackem and The Five Cocks on 35, second, still in with a shout were Quiz Park Rangers on 33 and outsiders (barring a meltown from the three teams in front) She & Him and Mr Idiot on 32. Quiz Master John chucked a two pointer into this round just to spice things up but one of the leaders were wise to it, The Five Cocks for the third week in a row won the quiz by recording maximum points in the Film & TV round along with She & Him, Mark Whitwortli & The Supremes, No Penang Style and The Bullets. Their closest contendors McAndrew Got Chinned By A Mackem fell at the last hurdle scoring a disappointing eight. Film & TV was relatively easy this week (we got told but wait till next week):
36. Kevin Spacey won an Oscar for Best Actor in 1999 for his role in which film?
39. In Friends, Ross had pet capuchin monkey, what was it’s name?
So fair play to our winners for the third consecutive week, this time with the classy monicker of The Five Cocks. A round of applause was given as team member Kenny stepped up to choose from the three envelopes on offer from barmaid Micki. This team have won beers for the last two weeks, firstly Robin, then Matt and now what does Kenny go for, the outside envelope to the left and what does he win…
Holy moly, this is definitely a record. A rollover of £240, yes let's re-type that, £240 goes into Quiz 62, the biggest win to date was £243, this means if another 50 quizzers turn out on Monday 18th that will be a near £300 Cash Prize! Unlucky Kenny and The Five Cocks but what a night Quiz 62 could be.
Fantastic. As we had been reeling from the implications of a near £300 prize, barman Chris had been scooting around the bar getting the Wild Card Post-It's sold. £1 gets anyone in the bar entry into the final question of the night, the answer is an obscure number, a date or any other numerical figure. The winner is the closest to this answer and they get everything collected, which tonight turned out to be a massive £40 (nearly as good as winning the Quiz Cash Prize!). Quiz 61's Wild Card Question:
In the Sports Round we asked Who scored Arsenal’s only goal in their 2-1 Champions League Final defeat to Barcelona in 2006? It was of course Sol Cambell, who played for the Gunners from 2001-2006.
The Wild Card Question tonight is quite simple, in what minute of the Champions League Final did Sol score the Arsenal goal?
With forty people in the Wild Card there was a damn good chance that one or maybe two would get the correct answer. The Post-It's were returned quite quickly apart from one or two stragglers who were trying to 'work it out logically'(?) and then Quiz Master John went through his now familiar Post-It shake down. From the rows and rows of Post-It's neatly stuck to his Quiz Operations Central Podium he starts tearing off the wrong answers letting everyone know the Name and Number.
We got down to three Post-It's and the tension was high as John announced "Phil T put, 37, The Wrong Charlie put 37 and Theo put… 37, so it's a Dart Off!" (as regulars of the Quiz know John loves a good Dart Off).
The three guys stepped up to the ockey for three darts each, highest score wins the £40, oh the pressure! Wrong Charlie was first up and his first dart promptly fell to the floor but he managed 13. Theo was up next, his arrows were good and he scored a reasonable 28 so it was all down to Phil T. His first dart missed the board completely and his second and third only added up to 14 so Theo was the winner of the humungous £40 prize and he was well happy with that!
With a big round of applause for our three contestants in the Dart Off and a Goodnight and God Bless from our MC Quiz Master John, that was Quiz 61 done and dusted. A big thanks to everyone who turned out and we hope to see you all next week for the mother of all Quiz Prizes…
