The night was tense, there was big money to play for. By the time we had reckoned it all up, with the 12 teams and 43 contestants there was a potential £190 in the pot for the winners so the atmosphere was a tad competitive.
Quiz Master John kicked it all off a little after 9pm with the Pic Round, this week Supermodels… gorgeous and rich, but could you name them? Then after a few minutes of contemplation we got going with the first round, General Knowledge.
We were well surprised at everyones knowledge of Supermodels in the Picture Round, either the guys have been spending too much time on the internet or you are all reading the web site preview!
The appropriately named The Inappropriate Cardinals and Two Men + One Pastie scored an incredible 11 from 12 along with the Deutsche team Ratespiel (German for Quiz don't you know). Three teams scored 10, Siouxsie And The Banshees, The Carpet Baggers and The Bullets with the rest getting sevens to nines. Very impressive scores!
The General Knowledge Round had some good scores too, top of the pile Quiz To Meet You, You're The Best and The Carpet Baggers on nines with Get That Dog Out Of My Pub, The Inappropriate Cardinals, She & Him, Dunno and The Bullets all picking up eights. Our Quizzers certainly have a 'General Knowledge' answering questions like this:
2. Which river mouth forms New York City Harbour?
9. The defence of Rorke’s Drift occurred during which war in 1879?
This gave us an interesting leader board going into the second round Music. Two teams, The Carpet Baggers and The Inappropriate Cardinals were tied in first on 19 with another two teams Quiz To Meet You, You're The Best and The Bullets on 18 plus a further two on 17, Two Men + One Pastie and Ratespiel with the rest just behind. Looking close.
There was some great scores in The Music Round, a perfect 10 for The Innapropriate Cardinals and a near perfect nine for Get That Dog Out Of My Pub, Quiz To Meet You, You're The Best, The Carpet Baggers and She & Him had the Quiz in the balance going into half time. Here's a couple of Music samples:
14. The late Stuart Adamson originally singer with the Skids went on to form which band in the early 80’s?
15. Which Russian duo had a Number One in 2003 with All the Things She Said?
Quiz Master John gave us the scores going into savouries and it was close. The Inappropriate Cardinals were just in the lead on 29, hot on their heels The Carpet Baggers on 28 and Quiz To Meet You, You're The Best on 27 with a pack of teams not that far behind on 25's. It was all to play for as we retired for a break and snacks, smokes and beers.
This weeks delectable snacks where, savoury wheels, chipsticks and peanuts, for a quid entrance fee what more could you ask for? Delicious!
After our five minute break and we were ready for the killer round, Sports. Traditionally the make our break round Sports sorts the winners from the contenders and this week was no exception… one team scored nine and their nearest rivals scored fives at best. Step forward The Inappropriate Cardinals with a near perfect nine in a difficult round – outstanding. Hard lines to Idiots Hit The Roof, She & Him and The Bullets who got acceptable fives in a round that included such obscure questions as:
24. Which former player managed Tottenham Hotspur from 2001-2003?
28. Which 1920’s iconic (American) boxer has a fish named after him?
It looked like everyone was playing for second place going into TV & Films, The Inappropriate Cardinals were on a massive 38. Closest challengers The Carpet Baggers were on 32 and we had a few other teams on 30-31 but Sport had definitely decided this Quiz unless The Inappropriate Cardinals had a complete meltdown.
There were some excellent scores in TV & Films, three teams got 100% scores, two got nines from 10 and four got eight from ten but one of the perfect 10 scores was our regular team and worthy winners of Quiz 60 The Inappropriate Cardinals. Could you have answered questions like this?
32. What is the name of Russell Crowe's character in ‘Gladiator’?
37. In Channel 4‘s comedy the Big Bang Theory Sheldon is deeply troubled when Penny proves to be more skilled than him at which computer game?
What a fantastic score, The Inappropriate Cardinals dropped just four points in the entire Quiz… outstanding. After a deserved round of applause for the win it was down to team member Matt to choose from the three envelopes on offer from new Quiz Night Barmaid (or is that Barperson these days) Gemma. Would it be the £190 Cash, Beers or Vouchers? Matt went for the left of the three and for the fourth week in a row announced beers when he opened the prize envelope!
Not great for The Inappropriate Cardinals but absolutely champion for The Colly Quiz as next week we could be up to a potential prize of £230+. That's getting into record breaking winnings territory and who won that… yes, the team that on the night called themselves The Inappropriate Cardinals (here's team member Matt picking up his teams winnings back in August 2012.
Whilst Matt had been trying in vain to win the money, Micki had been out getting the Post-Its sold for our Quiz finale the Wild Card Question. One question, one obscure number or date for the answer and nearest to it wins everything in the Wild Card kitty. Following Micki's undoubted sales technique coupled with our eager contestants enthusiasm that kitty was up to a massive £37. The Wild Card Question for Quiz 60 was:
In the Film & TV Round we asked “On which ITV game show would you hear the expression: “Say What You See”?” It was of course Catchphrase which Irish Comedian Roy Walker is most famous for hosting between 1986 and 1999.
The Wild Card Question tonight is how many episodes of Catchphrase did Roy Walker present over those 13 years?
There were several Post-It's on Quiz Master Johns freshly cleared table in seconds, some confident answers or wild guesses? John gave everyone a couple of minutes along with a gentle reminder that The Colly Quiz does not allow Googling or anything of that nature (well it wouldn't be fair would it?). Then the answers were in and John started on his sorting procedure, from the lines of Post-It's stuck on his desk he quickly whipped off those that were crazy first, then just excessive, then not too far off, all the time letting everyone know the names and numbers… you could hear the laughs (over 3,000 in 13 years… thats 230 per year?) then the groans as we got closer and eventually there were just three left with £37 up for grabs. John called out, "Dave, it's not you… Callum, close, but it's not you… Rosco, just seven out it is you!". Fantastic, what a result for Rosco, did okay in the Quiz itself but hey a £1 stake a £37 prize, the Wild Card is well worth the odds.
That was it, Quiz 60 was done and dusted with a goodnight from John. Thanks to all who turned out, we look forward to seeing you for Quiz 61 and a possible record cash prize.
