Quiz 75 again summed up why we do the Quiz… because it's a right laugh on a Monday! It's a good night out with a great crowd in The Colly having a bit of banter over the Quiz.
This week we had seven teams in total, which meant a whopping £168 Cash Prize on offer and it turned out to be quite an exciting competition.
Quiz Master John had to hand out the quiz sheets as Freda and Micki were stowed out at the bar, which must be an unusual sight these days in a local boozer on a Monday evening!
This weeks Picture Round was Everyday Items but really close up. The macro pics got quite a good reception from the teams and most had one or two that really had them thinking. The General Knowledge started off quite easy but then got really hard very quickly which had a few teams scratching their heads at questions like these:
Q8 What is the second stroke of the four stroke engine known as?
Q9 Which of Reckitt Benckiser well known brands comes in the form of a plug-in?
Most teams did well in the Picture Round with Dead Parrots being unbelievably observant and getting the full marks of 12 from 12. Fantastic Four, I Need Chicken Burger and It's A Cock Out did very well with 11's and Which One Of You Lot Is Simon Bird? You're An Idiot! and Hang On In There Nelson did quite well with tens. Not In It were well named not being in it with a six… but maybe pics weren't their strong point.
The General Knowledge was won with a resounding ten from ten by, yes you've guessed it Not In It who were totally in it for this round. Second with nine we had Hang On In There Nelson and joint third on eights Fantastic Four and It's A Cock Out (bit saucy but funny all the same).
Going into Music it was close, we had Fantastic Four, Hang On In There Nelson and It's A Cock Out fighting it out for first place with 19's a piece followed by the Dead Parrots tied with I Need Chicken Burger on 18 and third Which One Of You Lot Is Simon Bird? You're An Idiot! scoring 17. It was a tight Quiz already.
Music was a good round for everyone, the Fantastic Four got an outstanding ten to take the round. Which One Of You Lot Is Simon Bird? You're An Idiot!, I Need Chicken Burger and It's A Cock Out were close with nine and the rest got eights. Sarah reckoned the questions were too easy… what do you think?
Q17 In 1984, who had a UK number one hit single with Two Tribes?
Q20 Which disco queen should have made you leave your key and walk out the door in 1978?
Half time snacks were on the way and at the break we had Fantastic Four in the lead on 29, It's A Cock Out on 28 and Hang On In There Nelson and I Need Chicken Burger on 27. Still tight but it was time for the savouries.
After a beer top up, smokes (for those who do) and a variety of free and filling snacks such as bacon rashers, hula hoops and mini cheddars it was onto everyone's favourite round, Sport.
This week Not In It outdid themselves in Sport with a nine from 10, second we had It's A Cock Out on eight and in third Dead Parrots on seven. Here's a couple of Sports questions:
Q29 Who won the 2009 Rugby World Sevens Cup?
Q28 With which sport would you associate Nick Skelton?
So, this was it, final round with just three points separating five teams it was TV and Films. In the lead was It's A Cock Out on 36, second the Fantastic Four on 34 and joint third on 33, Dead Parrots, Not In It and Hang On In There Nelson. Here's some sample TV and Film questions:
Q33 Who directed the 2008 Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire?
Q36 What were the first names of Starsky and Hutch?
Fantastic Four needed the leaders to get an eight or less to have a chance of winning but It's A Cock Out finished with a spurt, they won the round with a nine and therefore the nights Quiz with an excellent score of 45 points, four clear of the Fantastic Four who came in second.
There was a big round of applause for our regular team It's A Cock Out as team member the lovely Lisa was presented with the three envelopes that contained their potential prize… would Lisa pick Food Vouchers, Beers or the huge Cash Prize? She thought for a moment before confidently picking the right envelope... and it was the right envelope as she unfolded the piece of paper inside and announced "Cash Prize!". Fantastic, well done Lisa, that's £168 in the bag!
After dividing up their cash It's A Cock Out put £42 back into the pot for next weeks Quiz – what a thoroughly nice bunch of guys.
Next up after all that excitement was the Wild Card. £1 a person, one question (and as in the Quiz absolutely no Googling) and closest to the numerical answer gets the whole pot of cash. This week there was £31 to play for, here's the question:
In the Music Round we asked On which Guns N’ Roses album did the song Paradise City first appear? The 1987 album was Appetite for Destruction and Paradise City was the longest track on it.
The Wild Card question tonight is how long in minutes and seconds was the album version of Paradise City?
Richard had his answer on the table almost before Quiz Master John had finished the question. Everyone else followed suit fairly quickly. There was no need for mathematics or drawings tonight it was just a straight guess required, the clue being the longest track on the album.
After everyone was in and John had arranged the Yellow Post-It's in their customary grid formation on his table of answers, he started reeling off the names and numbers of the guesses that weren't close enough. He ended up with four Post-It's left, he took two off, looked at his answer sheet then put one of them back and announced Ross your back in it! John then took a further two off, leaving two little Yellow Post-It's in the centre of his table with answers just 19 seconds apart, Googz and the reinstated Ross.
John paused for a while (probably still fantasising over the Corr's Question from Film & TV) before announcing… Ross, good job I put you back in as you've just won yourself £31. There was a big Colly Quiz applause for Ross as he stepped up to the bar to collect his first ever Wild Card win. Hard lines to Googz, there was just one second between the two answers (but he was in the winning team It's A Cock Out so that's a bit of a consolation).
That was it, Quiz 75 done and dusted, well done It's A Cock Out and Ross both big cash winners on the night. We look forward to seeing you all again for Quiz 76 where we start it all again with a rollover of £42.
