Well the Quiz never ceases to amaze us. We only had a £42 cash rollover so were expecting a standard seven or eight quiz teams for Quiz 76 but as we were getting set up Chris the barman told us there weren't enough Picture Quizzes to go around… disaster! We'd optimistically printed twelve Picture Rounds but there were thirteen teams in total. Good job Freda (the Boss upstairs) had charged her printer with ink, we managed to get the additional sheet printed and after a small delay kicked off around 9:15pm.

The massive turnout of 50 had taken the cash prize to £92, we'll have to check but that could be a record number of entrants for Quiz 76. The bar was absolutely rammed and Quiz Master John generously gave up his stool so one of the Idiots team could get a seat (he may support them lot down the road but he's still a top bloke).

The Picture Quiz this week was American Road Signs, the clue in the Quiz Preview had been "If you've driven on route 66 amongst others you may have a marked advantage".

The General Knowledge Round started off easy, as usual, but gradually got harder question by question until we had conundrums of this calibre:

Q4 In which European country are the forested highlands of Hunsrück?
Q10 Topical question. At the weekend, we had a ‘Supermoon’, this occasionally occurs when a full moon is also at it’s closest point to the earth making it appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter in the night sky. What is this phenomenon known as?

After the first ten questions Quiz Master John marked up the Picture Round and the General Knowledge together and it was pretty close. Experts in American Road Signage were Need A New Bumper* with 11, closely followed by Shona Can I Have the Woodstain Back**, One Armed Bandit and Someone Has Sprayed All Over Shona** on 10.

Team name clarification…
* The teams car had an argument with a lampost in The Colly Car Park (on it's own) whilst the team were actually doing the quiz (the lampost has whiplash apparently)
** Regular, the smouldering Shona, going on holiday the very next day, had been for a spray tan and let's say she had got full value.

General Knowledge had two teams with more General Knowledge than the rest, both One Armed Bandit and Adios Rafa won the round getting full marks, with She & Him coming in second place with an eight and the rest of the teams managing sevens and sixes.

This meant we had a leader board going into the Music round looking like this, top team was One Armed Bandit on 20, second on 18 we had Adios Rafa and Need A New Bumper and in third was Someone Has Sprayed All Over Shona with 17 but it was early days.

There were a couple of difficult questions in the Music Round and that reflected in the scores with top in tunes coming from five teams with eight's, Adios Rafa, El Tres Amigos, She & Him, Need A New Bumper and Idiots Thank John For Passing Stool Freely (team name? refer to para two). Here's one of the easy and one of the hard questions:

Q12 Which singer went from Rehab to cover the Zutons’ song Valerie with Mark Ronson in 2007?
Q16 Come out of things unsaid, Shoot an apple off my head, And a trouble that can’t be named, A tiger’s waiting to be tamed singing, You are, You are. Name this 2002 hit?

Going into half time snacks we had in the lead Adios Rafa and Need A New Bumper on 26, One Armed Bandit on 25 with El Tres Amigos, She & Him and Someone Has Sprayed All Over Shona on 24. It was looking very close going into the savouries.

Time for a break to recharge the glasses, have a smoke or just enjoy the delicious free snacks, which this week were Crisps, Hula Hoops and Spicey Hedgehogs (not real Hedgehogs of course, that would be silly, spicy hedgehog shaped snacks). The snacks went down very well and set all the teams up for the leveler… Sport.

Sport wrecked most teams this week, the best of the bunch was Adios Rafa who did well with a six, El Tres Amigos and Idiots Thank John For Passing Stool Freely came second with a five and then in third we had She & Him with Someone Has Sprayed All Over Shona returning fours. Here's a couple of questions that threw our teams:

Q29 Who was the only female to win the BBC sports personality of the year in the 1990s?
Q30 Manchester United won the 1998/99 Champions League Final 2-1, with very late goals from Sheringham and Solskjær but who had scored for Bayern Munich in the 6th minute of the game?

Going into the final round of the quiz had Adios Rafa in the lead on 32, One Armed Bandit, El Tres Amigos and Need A New Bumper three behind on 29 and She & Him, Someone Has Sprayed All Over Shona and Need A New Bumper on 28.

As regular readers and Quizzers now, it would take a bit of a meltdown for a team three points in the lead to lose it in the final round Film & TV, especially with questions like this (alright, the second one is quite hard):

Q31 In Star Trek - The Next Generation, what was the name of the android Lieutenant on board the the Enterprise-D?
Q39 In the Friends episode The One at The Beach, Rachel tricks Ross’s new girlfriend into shaving her head. What was the girlfriend called?

Even though She & Him got an outstanding 10 in the round and One Armed Bandit, I Need Chicken Burger and Someone Has Sprayed All Over Shona got nines, Adios Rafa got an eight which meant they won Quiz 76 by two points. Fifty odd people gave them quite a round of applause as team member Sally got up to choose from the three envelopes Chris was holding, Quiz Master John reminded her that one envelope had some Food Vouchers, one had a tray of Beers and one had the £92 Cash Prize. Sally's hand hovered over the three before decisively picking the right, she very slowly opened it then unfolded the piece of paper inside and said we've won nothing? (the slip was blank) helpful Chris was on hand to unfold the slip again to reveal… Sally had just picked the Cash Prize!

There was another loud round of applause as Sally returned to her team grinning like the proverbial Cheshire cat, well done. That's the second week in a row the Cash Prize has been drawn and this week it was another of our regular teams Richard N, Sarah S and Phil M in the winning team. They very generously put twenty pound of their winnings back in the pot for Quiz 77.

In amongst all of that excitement our super second in command at The Colly, Micki, had been collecting the Wild Card entries for the very last time, she's leaving us next week to go on a round the world adventure. We don't know when she will return [to The Colly] but it could be a very long time. John had mentioned she was leaving during the Quiz and everyone gave her a great applause but Micki missed it as she was down in the cellar!

We are having a massive party for Micki next Sunday (30th June) which coincides with our fantastic Live…@The_Colly music evening and the Wedding of our regular Quizzers She & Him, so it's going to be a great night (after what will be a great day). If any of our Quiz regulars would like to come down for it and wish Micki 'Bon Voyage', please do, you are more than welcome (She & Him may not make it but that's understandable!). There's also rumours that Micki will be joining in Quiz 77, but after Sunday's celebrations who knows!

Anyway, back to the quiz. It was getting really late so John announced there was a massive £42 for the winner of the Wild Card (£1 entry, one question, closest get's all the money collected) and promptly read out the following question:

In the Sports Round we asked a question about Manchester United’s dramatic Champions League win aginst Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp in Barcelona
in 1999.

The Wild Card Question tonight is real simple, according to UEFA, what was the official attendance at the 1998/99 Champions League Final?

There was a flurry of yellow Post-It's started to appear on Quiz Master John's table of knowledge, Quizzers have even started to grid them out for him as they know he likes an ordered layout. He hurried everyone along as it was nearing last orders and then rather than do his usual thing of taking individuals off and reading names and numbers, due to the late hour John just anounced over 100,000 your out, under 90,000 your out, over 95,000 your out… then Sarah S belatedly walked over to the John's table and stuck her Post-It down. John looked a little bemused, then Sarah laughed as she walked away and John chuckled as he announced it was over 95,000 anyway!

Eventually we got down to between 90,000 and 91,000 and John informed everyone the winner was just 7 off the actual answer, so "Leecs come and collect your £42 Cash!" Leecs, first time at the quiz, walked up to the bar to collect his money looking very pleased and why not, £42 for a £1 guess? So we asked him what made him put that answer and would you believe it he said he had watched a DVD the night before about Man United's Treble that year and he remembered the commentator mentioning the crowd at the Nou Camp being just over 90,000 – what a coincidence? Good for you Leecs, congratulations, that evening watching a 14 year old Man U treble had just made you forty quid better off!

That was it, the bell was rung for last orders and amongst the ensuing din John managed his signature Goodnight and God Bless. Thanks to everyone for turning out it was an excellent evenings entertainment and we hope to see you all back for Quiz 77.
