After last weeks big cash win we did wonder if there would be a decent turnout for Quiz 81. The generous donation of £38 into this weeks pot from last weeks winners obviously helped as we had an excellent turnout with 38 Quizzers and ten teams taking the nights cash prize to a not to be sniffed at £76. We had a few new teams in as well which was encouraging.

Long hair, leather jackets and air guitars

We kicked off just after nine with this weeks Picture Quiz which a number of teams had worked out from the clue on the website was going to be Heavy Metal Logos. After five minutes or so to get settled in and get the thinking caps on Quiz Master John got the show on the road with our first round of ten questions on General Knowledge.

Five teams did very well on the Heavy Metal Logos, Quiz Badoo, The Train In Spain Falls Mainly Into The Drain*, The Three Mousekateers, The Hazleymi Brothers and The Academy (Planning For A Future) all getting 100% scores of 12. She & Him came in a good second scoring 11 with Original Idiots and Ramsays Gals in third with tens.

*Our regular team are renowned for their 'bad taste' monickers but this one can't be put down to the usual culprit Richard N… it was actually dreamed up by Sarah S!

The General Knowledge was fairly well contested this week with Quiz Badoo just edging it with a perfect ten. The Train In Spain Falls Mainly Into The Drain, The Academy (Planning For A Future), She & Him and Lambton Ladies came a close second on nine and Original Idiots came in third with an eight. No wonder everyone did so well with easy questions like these?

Q3 Marvel Comics Mr Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing are better known as what?
Q5 Which mammal has the Latin name canis lupus?

So it was quite a close leader board going into round two Music with Quiz Badoo leading the pack on 22, The Train In Spain Falls Mainly Into The Drain and The Academy (Planning For A Future) on 21 with She & Him in third on 20. Still plenty to play for.

The majority of Music Questions this week were fairly easy:

Q12 Who had hit records with Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport, Sun Arise and a cover of Stairway to Heaven?
Q19 The smouldering Chrissie Hynde was a sensation in the eighties with The Pretenders but which (Scottish supergroup) singer was she married to for 6 years until 1990?

Quiz Master John added a further song title to Q12… "Two Little Boys Had It Coming" (Ouch!).

Best of the bunch in Music was Quiz Badoo and The Train In Spain Falls Mainly Into The Drain with eight from a possible 11, second place went to the charmingly named Metallicock on 7 and in third we had The Three Mousekateers, Original Idiots, The Academy (Planning For A Future) and She & Him on six (or should that be sex to try and get more website hits!).

Going into the break we had Quiz Badoo in the lead with an impressive 30 points, second The Train In Spain Falls Mainly Into The Drain on a nearly as impressive 29. In third The Academy (Planning For A Future) on 27 and fourth She & Him on 26. It already looked like a four horse race with the nearest to the lead group being two points behind She & Him.

Half way point in the quiz and it's a five minute break to let everyone charge their glasses (or as Quiz Master John likes to remind everyone "the bar is still open!"), have a fag or just get some fresh air in the stifling heat.

Now let's talk about the free half time savouries! We had the standard but never boring bacon fries, then we had the cheesey biscuit  things which always go down well but this week we had barbeque coated peanuts which were absolutely tremendous, a definite winner.

Next up the Sports Round. Our teams this week didn't find sport as difficult as usual with two returning a near perfect 10 from 11 so well done to Quiz Badoo and The Train In Spain Falls Mainly Into The Drain. Second in the round we had The Academy (Planning For A Future) on nine who possibly could have had a ten but they insisted on putting Kung Fu instead of Karate for the question: The name of which martial art literally means Empty Hands? even though team member Brendan had been adamant that it was Karate (overruled by a majority). Third in the round were three teams on eight, Metallicock, The Three Mousekateers and Original Idiots. Was Sport a tad easier? Here's some samples:

Q22 What career did Arnold Schwarzenegger have before acting and governing California?
Q28 What sport featured in the 1958 film Damn Yankees?

This left the leader board going into the final TV & Film round looking like this: Quiz Badoo on 40, The Train In Spain Falls Mainly Into The Drain on 39 and The Academy (Planning For A Future) on 36. Barring a complete screw up it looked like a straight fight between Quiz Badoo and The Train In Spain Falls Mainly Into The Drain for a chance to draw tonights prize. Which of the teams would come out on top with questions as challenging as these:

Q34 What’s the name of the braless redhead who co-presented the BBCs garden makeover television series Ground Force?
Q39 Gladiator was which hellraisers last film before he passed away?

There were a couple of wicked questions in TV & Film but amazingly one team got them all right and with a perfect ten this also won them the nights Quiz! A massive well done to Quiz Badoo who only dropped four points all night (which has to be some sort of record). There was the usual but deserved Colly round of applause for the winners as Barman Chris went looking for a member of the elusive team to draw the winning envelope. Eventually Googz took responsibility and went for the middle envelope of the three which contained…

The beers! So that's hard lines for Googz and team Quiz Badoo but the good news is it's a £76 rollover for Quiz 82.

Barmaid Gemma had been busy collecting pound coins in for the final part of Quiz Night, the Wild Card. This is open to everyone in the pub and it's one question, with one numeric or date answer and the closest to it wins the entire pot collected. This weeks question was:

In the Sports Round we had a question about Ryan Giggs who has made a record 941 appearences so far for Manchester United since he made his first team debut at the age of 17 in March 1991.

The Wild Card Question tonight is how many goals has he scored for Manchester United in all competitions during his 22 year career?

Quiz Master John repeated the rules after reading the question, as with the rest of the Quiz… no Googling allowed. Whilst everyone was contemplating their answers Gemma gave John the Wild Card prize total, a massive £41. Well worth a stake of a quid!

The yellow Post-Its slowly began to fill John's quiz table and after a couple of minutes he asked if everyones answer was in. He then began the process of eliminating the wrong answers, this week in an entirely random fashion. First out was someone who put 935 goals (what a record that would be in 941 matches), then he whittled the answers down naming each entrant and their guess as he disgarded them until he was left with just five yellow Post-Its on his desk.

The Spanish Train Drivers Lawyer was the first of the five to be binned with 143, Scoop, close but no cigar, went with a guess of 150, Gill, out with a guess of 178 (unlucky) which left us with just two Post-It's on the table. One from Michael H with a guess of 163 and one from Robin who had tried his luck with 172. Michael H has been to loads of Quizzes but never won the Wild Card, Robin almost never misses a Quiz and he's won the Wild Card three or for times.

Lady Luck was smiling on Robin tonight though as he was one goal closer to the actual answer than Michael H. So it was commiserations for Michael H (how close can you be without winning) but elation for Robin, £41 better off, that's the second biggest Wild Card win in the history of the Quiz we think. Robin got a rousing round of applause before getting a few drinks in for his team mates Quiz Badoo with his winnings as John finished the night off with his usual Goodnight and God Bless.

What a night Quiz 81 was, thanks to everyone who turned out and we hope to see you all again for Quiz 82 where we start off with a pretty good £78 rollover so the Cash Prize could well be over the hundred pound mark.
