John was back in the Quiz Master's chair after his bout of tonsillitis, there was £103 in the rollover but where were the teams? The back room was sparse, there were a few milling about outside but it looked like a poor turnout for Quiz 83… until bang on 9pm the place filled up from nowhere and we had eight eager teams taking the potential prize on the night to a very reasonable £131.

The picture quiz was distributed round the bar just after nine, this week it was topical, nicknames of Premiership Teams for the 2013/14 season that kicks off on Saturday. The visual clues were a bit tenuous (for some) but that's half the fun of the round.

Premier Teams from the sometimes tenuous visual clues to their nicknames!

Top scorers in the pics we had the delightfully named Sack The Mackem And Bring Back The Yank and the less controversially monikered The Academy. Quiz Master John did comment that seeing as nobody of significance had died this week he could understand our regular teams shift of focus. Our cricket contingent Any Aussies Here? came in second with a nine and then we had three teams on eight, We'll Take Another Short Break For Half An Hour, She & Him and Idiots In Trouble. Alanna was in, she did a marvelous job filling in as Quiz Mistress for John in Quiz 82 but tonight she was on the competing side and her team We're Screwed were screwed coming in last in pics on five.

It hadn't crossed our mind the potential confusion that could be associated with picture 12, a lot of teams put Arsenal for the George Michael pic but we did state it was the nicknames of the teams we were looking for so Cottager was the link!

The General Knowledge round was fairly easy we thought but it got mixed reactions from our eight teams, some did really well getting full marks but there were others who just returned four from ten! Here's a couple of taster questions:

Q2 Who wrote the science fiction tale The War of the Worlds?
Q6 What kind of marine animal has the latin name hippocampus?

Again top of the tree we had Sack The Mackem And Bring Back The Yank this time joined by Dr Shuggy And The Greens with a 100% ten. On nines not so screwed this time We're Screwed and eights The Academy. This gave us a leader board going into Music looking like this. Deservedly top after maximum marks in both rounds Sack The Mackem And Bring Back The Yank on 22, in second on 20 The Academy and way back in third Dr Shuggy And The Greens on 16. After the initial rounds it already looked like there was only one team in it.

Onto the Music round. We like a range of music questions, this week we had 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000+ questions along with a bit of opera, so it pays to have a bit of a range of ages in the team with questions like these:

Q15 What word described Lips Inc's town, the Goodies gibbon and Jasper Carrot's moped?
Q20 Who was Kissing With Confidence in 1983?

Top music was sevens from four of our eight teams, Sack The Mackem And Bring Back The Yank, Dr Shuggy And The Greens, The Academy and She & Him. Everyone else got fives.

Going into snacks we still had Sack The Mackem And Bring Back The Yank in the lead on 29 and The Academy a close second on 27. Dr Shuggy And The Greens remained four behind second on 23 and the rest were between 21 and 18.

Into the half time break, our interlude commenced with John advising that the bar was still open for drinks whilst there was a mass exodus outside for a smoke to recharge the brain cells. For snacks this week we had a new addition, Twiglets along with firm favourites spicy hula Hoop rings and coated peanuts (you either love them or hate them).

After the five minutes was up we were up and running again with our favourite round… Sport! This usually crystallizes the final order and with questions of this caliber are you surprised?

Q22 Who spent just 44 days as manager of Leeds United FC in 1974?
Q29 In what television show did rugby commentator Eddie Waring guest as a dancing sailor?

Top with every question right and 11 marks were Sack The Mackem And Bring Back The Yank. Second in the round, Any Aussies Here? with a nine and third on eight The Academy. So the net result of that round was that the two leaders just pulled further away from the chasing pack!

Special mention for She & Him who I think would be the first to agree that this is not their best round, they did exceptionally well this week and got a team best of seven in Sport. Fantastic.

Final round on TV & Films and it looked all over bar the shouting. Sack The Mackem And Bring Back The Yank on 40 points were a massive five points ahead of The Academy who themselves on 35 were an even greater margin ahead of third spot Dr Shuggy And The Greens on 29. It would take an unbelievable meltdown for our regular team, this week known as Sack The Mackem And Bring Back The Yank, to drop five points, especially with questions as easy as these:

Q33 Ian Lavender played the character Private Frank Pike, in which classic TV series?
Q40 In the 1986 movie Highlander what was the name of the clan that lead character Connor belonged to?

Unsurprisingly Sack The Mackem And Bring Back The Yank won the nights quiz with a near perfect nine on the last round. We'll Take Another Short Break For Half An Hour also got an excellent nine in TV & Film and joint third with eights were We're Screwed, Dr Shuggy And The Greens, Any Aussies Here? and She & Him.

So it was a deserved round of applause for our winners on the night Sack The Mackem And Bring Back The Yank, they had led the Quiz from the pics and steadily increased their lead round on round. Barman Chris, back from yet another holiday, offered up the choice of three envelopes to the team. Richard C took the responsibility this week, went centre and pulled out BEERS! Unlucky Richard, no cash this week but if your team keeps playing like that it's just a matter of time before one of you pulls the cash prize again!

Barman Chris had already been round the bar getting the Wild Card entries in whilst John had been totting up the final round. The Wild Card is one final question in the Quiz open to anyone in the bar where for a £1 stake you get a little yellow Post-It onto which you write a numerical answer to one obscure question read out by Quiz Master John. Closest to the actual answer wins everything collected in for the Wild Card and this weeks total was £24. So without further ado John read the Wild Card Question out:

In the sports round we asked a question about Lester Piggot, one of the greatest jockeys ever, he won over 5,300 races in his career and made quite a bit of money but neglected to declare some of it. Unfortunately for him the revenue caught up with him in 1987 and he was jailed for three years for tax ‘irregularities’.

The Wild Card Question tonight is how many days did Lester actually spend behind bars?

Obviously, as with all our quiz there is no Googling so everyone scratched their heads for a few moments before writing down their guess and sticking the yellow Post-It's in nice neat rows on John's desk. Once everyone was in John started sifting through the answers announcing who was out as he went, we ended up with four, three of which were dispatched quickly to leave Jay as the winner of the £24 cash prize! Well done Jay, his first £24 Wild Card windfall capped off a very successful day – he had just started a new job.

So that was it, John signed off with his signature Good Night and God Bless and Quiz 83 was old news thanks to everyone who turned out it was a great night. Quiz 84 will be in two weeks time due to the Man City v Newcastle match on Monday 19th so we'll hope to see you all on the Bank Holiday Monday (26th) where we start with a substantial rollover of £131.
