With a near £200 Cash Prize on offer we were expecting a deluge of teams for Quiz 85 but at 8:55pm there were three… we'd printed 15 Pic Quiz Sheets in anticipation of a big crowd and we were thinking of abandoning the night because of the low turnout when a further four teams turned in at 9:05pm. Fantastic, better late than never and it boosted the cash prize to £195. Game on!
First up we had apologies for non attendance. Quiz Master John read out Sarah S's Mum's letter explaining why Sarah would not be able to attend the Quiz this week. A Business Show in London was deemed a reasonable excuse for not turning up so we carried on. Sarah S's team however looked a little vulnerable without her vast knowledge of Music, Film and TV trivia.
The pic Quiz this week was sports brands up close and personal, how recognisable are these symbols when just a portion of them are shown? The results were – Marketing Works!
The General Knowledge Round was tough, well we were expecting a big turnout for potentially £200 plus so the questions were pitched at the appropriate level:
Q6 On which Caribbean island is the volcano Mount Pelee?
Q8 Scorpions are categorised into which class of animals?
Five minutes after the end of the General Knowledge Round John called the answer sheets and the Picture Round in for marking. There were some good scores in the Pics, The Academy got the full 12. Joint second we had Same Idiots At Midnight and Who Lives In A Hearse Like This* with a trio of teams in third on 10, Universally Challenged, She and Him and Jacob's Cream Crackered*.
*A couple of the usual suspects excelled in bad taste team names this week, can you guess the celebrity deaths they are referring to?
Our teams didn't do so great in General Knowledge, well there was nearly £200 to play for! Top of the pile we had The Academy and Who Lives In A Hearse Like This on seven from ten, next in second three teams on six, Awkward Threesome, Same Idiots At Midnight and Jacob's Cream Crackered and third the rest on fives Universally Challenged and She and Him.
A lot of the quizzers were checking their phones in between rounds as it was transfer deadline day.. had Newcastle signed anybody? Nope.
It was quite close going into round two. In the lead at this early stage The Academy on 19 just ahead of Who Lives In A Hearse Like This on 18 and Same Idiots At Midnight on 17. There were only four points between all seven teams. Music would soon sort that out with belting questions like these:
Q14 Which city was the pop star Shaggy born in?
Q20 What band topped the UK chart in 1996 with Spaceman?
A few teams did rather well in Music, surprising, as we thought the questions were quite 'challenging'. The Academy were joint top with Who Lives In A Hearse Like This on nines – quite a battle developing between these two teams. Next up on eight, Universally Challenged and in third on seven Awkward Threesome.
The leader board was taking shape going into the snacks break, we had The Academy out in front on 28 with Who Lives In A Hearse Like This hot on their heels on 27 with joint third positioned Universally Challenged and Same Idiots At Midnight way back on 23. The Quiz already looked like a two horse race.
Everybody checked the transfer deadline news again and Newcastle had so far signed… no-one.
On to snacks, which this week is a mystery? Just prior to the half time break a very good client from over eighteen years ago popped up at the bar so there was distraction as the snacks were served. If anyone wishes to provide more detail on the lovely savouries served up during the half time break of Quiz 85 please use the comments box at the base of the post!
After ten minutes break for smokes, snacks and beers we resumed the Quiz with another tough Sports Round. This is the round that normally makes or breaks and this week was no exception we had scores from three to ten. Not surprising with questions of this calibre?
Q21 Which former World Footballer of the Year is often known simply as Zizou?
Q29 Which ‘British’ athlete was disqualified in the 1984 Olympic women’s 3000 metres?
Top Sports gurus this week were Jacob's Cream Crackered with an excellent 10 from 10 (well done!). Second we had Universally Challenged on nine and in third three teams on eight, current Quiz leaders The Academy, current runners up Who Lives In A Hearse Like This plus Same Idiots At Midnight. A quick update was required on the NUFC signings – none.
Final round, Film & TV. Barring a complete disaster for both teams it was between leaders The Academy on 36 and Who Lives In A Hearse Like This on 35 as the nearest challengers after that were Universally Challenged on 32. We thought Film & TV was quite hard this week, here's a couple of sample questions:
Q32 Which classic comedy series about building workers in Germany was written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais?
Q39 In the 2012 Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises which London born actor played the role of the criminal mastermind Bane?
Obviously we underestimated the knowledge of our Quiz teams as two, Awkward Threesome and Who Lives In A Hearse Like This got ten from ten… so we had the pivotal point in the Quiz. It was now all down to what The Academy had scored, if it was nine from ten Quiz Master John would be over the moon as it would be a dart off. If it was eight from ten, leaders for every round of the Quiz so far, The Academy, would have been overtaken in the very last round.
One of the questions in the Film & TV Round was Who was the regular astrologer on 80s Breakfast Time? One member of The Academy team (who shall remain nameless) was adamant that it was Russell… Russell BRAND. The answer of course was Russell Grant, so on that question the quiz was lost, unlucky The Academy but well done to our regular team of Robin, Googz, Matt, Lisa and this week Guy from team Who Lives In A Hearse Like This, they won the Quiz by just one point after being second for the entire night.
It's all very well winning The Colly Quiz but now the really difficult part, choosing the correct envelope from the three in Boss Freda's hand. This week that responsibility fell to Guy M, he went wide left, confidently pulled the slip of paper out and cool as you like announced 'Cash'. After a round of applause for our dogged winners they divvied up the winnings and after buying Quiz Master John a beer generously returned £40 into the kitty for Quiz 86. Nice one guys.
A quick check on the transfer deadline news for Newcastle and surprisingly we still hadn't signed anyone, so we moved on to the final act of Quiz Night, a one off Wild Card question. Simple idea, for £1 per person you get a little yellow Post-It, there's one obscure question, one numerical answer, closest guess wins the lot… and absolutely no Googling! This weeks offering was:
In the Sport round we asked a question about football superstar Zinedine Zidane. Zizou as he was known starred for clubs in France, Italy and Spain for over 25 years before retiring in 2006.
In total Zidane made 789 appearances for club and country but as a playmaking midfielder he wasn’t a prolific goal scorer... even though he did score some spectacular goals.
Tonights Wild Card question is, over his career in all competitive competitions how many goals did Zidane score for Club and Country?
There was a clue there, 789 appearances, not a prolific goalscorer. Most people cottoned on and started to stick there Post-It's onto John's ready and willing podium. This week there was £24 to win in the Wild Card and once all the answers were in John started his filtration process. Everyone over 300 was named and binned, everyone under 100 was out, any one over 200 was close but ejected. John kept going until we were left with two Post-It's on the table, It's A Bad Week To Be Called David (regulars will probably guess who this was) on who answered '149 plus 2 sendings off for head butting' and James McKenzie on a nice and easy answer of 157. The nice and easy answer of 157 was just one out so well done James a regular Quizzer who won his first ever Wild card of £26 and got a hearty round of applause as he jogged up to the bar to receive his winnings.
So that was Quiz 85, John signed off with his usual Good Night and God Bless and we were done. By this time it was just about the closure of the transfer deadline and surprise, surprise Newcastle signed nobody, cheers Joe K.
Well done cash winners Who Lives In A Hearse Like This, thanks for donating £40 for next week and well done to James for winning the £26 Wild Card. Excellent night, thanks to everyone for turning out. We hope to see you all again for Quiz 86 where we start with a rollover of £40.
