You never know how the quiz is going to turn out, the weather doesn't seem to play a part, the time of the month is irrelevant, we just can't predict what the Monday Quiz will be like but this week was top drawer.
Last week we had a potential £200 prize and we had six teams, the cash was won and the winners very generously put £40 back in to the pot. This week we could possibly get £70+ but nine teams arrive! We just can't work it out but that's not a problem we are just happy that you guys turn out for our quiz!
We kicked off a little after nine with the Pics, this week: Pub Signs, a sort of Catchphrase showcasing twelve real UK pub graphics with the names blurred. Then after a few minutes to contemplate those Quiz Master John, in top form as usual, got us underway with the General Knowledge Round. Regulars will know we start easy but escalate to questions as hard as this:
Q5 What type of engines powers jet aeroplanes?
Q7 With which visual art movement is Roy Lichtenstein associated?
A few teams struggled with Quiz Master John's pronunciation when asking the question What kind of bird is a racing homer? Richard was convinced he was on about a raging homo which led to a few giggles. Everyone struggled with the Pic Round, it was quite hard but it was hard for all and the General Knowledge was pretty close too so it was a fairly even.
John made apologies for the tasteless team names and gave the pic scores out first. Top pub sign spotters were Syrias A Gas* and Heroes To Zeroes with 10 from 12. Second we had Lisa's Crutchless Panties**, Cheeky Monkeys and Universally Challenged with nines and third with eight Missing Our Village Idiot.
*Cringe, Richard does like to push the boundaries of what constitutes bad taste
**The lovely Lisa has broken her hip so is on crutches for six weeks, her team mates were obviously sympathetic!
In General Knowledge our brain boxes this week were Cheeky Monkeys and Missing Our Village Idiot with an excellent nine. Second with eights were Lisa's Crutchless Panties and the creatively named Idiots Tackle Like Gabby Agbonlahor. Then we had four teams in third on seven She & Him, Syrias A Gas, Heroes To Zeroes and The Nation Of Quizlam.
John read the scores out in no particular order as there was only three points separating nine teams. It was close but how would the teams fare with the Music Round and questions as melodious as these:
Q11 What instrument is famous musician Vanessa Mae best known for playing?
Q17 Who had a holiday in Cambodia in 1980?
Top of the pops in Music were The Nation Of Quizlam two points clear of the rest of the field with an eight. Then we had five teams on six Lisa's Crutchless Panties, She & Him, Idiots Tackle Like Gabby Agbonlahor, Heroes To Zeroes and Missing Our Village Idiot with everyone else getting five.
Just we broke for snacks John gave the leaders stats as follows, in the lead we had four teams on 23, Lisa's Crutchless Panties, Cheeky Monkeys, Heroes To Zeroes and Missing Our Village Idiot. In second on 22 we had Syrias A Gas and The Nation Of Quizlam with everyone else on 21. Three points in it at the halfway stage, we don't think the quiz has ever been this close!
Savouries… this week cheesy balls, spicy (and they were) hedgehog shaped things and both dry roasted and chilli coated peanuts. The Spicy hedgehog things were well nice.
The teams used the half time break to top up their drinks, have a smoke and berate other team members for not listening to them when writing answers! One team could have been two points better off if only…
Quiz Master John recalled everyone for Sport. Now this round generally sorts things out and this week was no exception. A good knowledge of loadsa kinds of sport is a real bonus for this round with questions as wide ranging as these:
Q25 Which team won the 1988-89 Football League Championship with a dramatic 2-0 win in their final match away to Liverpool?
Q30 What happened in the 1877 University Boat Race that had never happened before and hasn’t happened since?
Joint top of the league in sporty knowledge this week were Universally Challenged and The Nation Of Quizlam getting a round winning nine. Second the renamed You Can't Crutch This and Heroes To Zeroes with eights and third Syrias A Gas with Idiots Tackle Like Gabby Agbonlahor.
The Sports scores opened the leader board up and made for a very interesting final round as we had three teams now joint top on 31, You Can't Crutch This, Heroes To Zeroes and The Nation Of Quizlam. Second on 30 was Universally Challenged and still in with a good chance in joint third place were Syrias A Gas and Cheeky Monkeys on 29.
So it was all down to Film & TV, there were some interesting questions this week:
Q32 Which character from Noel’s Houseparty had a No.1 Hit in 1993?
Q39 Which character did actor Aaron Eckhart play in the 2008 film The Dark Knight?
Quiz Master John marked up the final round, the teams got their answer sheets back and nervously waited for the scores. Top marks went to Syrias A Gas with 10, taking them to a total score of 39, second in the round on nines we had Cheeky Monkeys, Missing Our Village Idiot and crucially with another name change, Crutching At Whores who with nine won this weeks Quiz by just one point on 40. So following a round of applause by the rest of the bar for our regulars this week known variously as Lisa's Crutchless Panties, You Can't Crutch This and Crutching At Whores our winners got the chance of drawing their prize from the three envelopes in Boss Freda's hand. Googz took responsibility and went right, but it was wrong… he opened the slip of paper and read Food Vouchers!
Hard lines Googz, there's always next week though when the prize money will escalate to possibly over £100.
During the excitement of the envelope draw Gemma had been round the bar getting entries for the final act of Quiz Night, the Wild Card Question. One Pound in the glass gets one yellow Post-it and the chance to answer one obscure Question. The closest to the answer required gets whatever is collected in the glass and tonight that was a very useful £25. When everyone was ready, John read the Wild Card Question:
In the Film & TV round the answer to one of the questions was Mr Blobby from Noel's House Party who in 1993 went to the top of the charts with his self titled debut single. Was he one hit wonder though?
Two years later on 16 December 1995 Mr Blobby released a follow-up single called Christmas In Blobbyland. Tonights Wild Card Question is what position did Christmas In Blobbyland peak at in the UK Charts?
Richard was over the moon, it was his favourite single apparently so he had a vivid memory of the chart position and was straight in with his little yellow Post-It. The rest of the entrants pondered a while before slowly lining their answers up on John's Quiz table. After John verified everyone was in he started the process of taking off the wrong answers to reveal who was closest to the prize. Everyone under 20 was out (hard lines Richard), those with an answer over 40 were binned followed by those below 30.
This left three yellow Post-Its on the table Barry H on 37, last weeks Wild Card winner James on 33 and Amy, who's won five Wild Cards to date on 36. After a bit of a pause John announced it was Amy's sixth win as she was just one off the desired chart position! This led to a great round of applause for Amy from our regular team She & Him who was over the moon with her £25. This win takes Amy into the joint lead with hubby Rob for winning the most Wild Cards in The Colly Quiz, both have won six which means an amazing 14% of Wild Cards have been won by She & Him, what a statistic.
So that was it, a very entertaining Quiz 86 was complete with John's signature Good Night and God Bless. Thanks to everyone for turning out, we hope to see you all for Quiz 87.
