It was a damp and cold Monday night, hardly surprising in mid-January but it was lovely and cosy inside The Colly as Freda had the stoves stoked up to the max. After all the excitement of the Christmas and New Year Specials it was back to normal for Quiz 102, the standard questions in our usual four round format with a Picture Round to start.

This weeks Picture Round was inspired by regular Quizzer Lorna, 'World Leaders' she suggested so here we go, current presidents of their respective nations and match them to the countries flag! Yes, pretty difficult and Lorna did say her idea was more like 20th Century world leaders (what like Churchill and Mussolini… that's far too easy isn't it?).

The clue on the Preview this week was "Vexillology gives clues to world leaders".

The clue on the Preview this week was "Vexillology gives clues to world leaders".

Whilst everyone was contemplating flags and world leaders Quiz Master John got us underway with the General Knowledge just after nine (after a little cajoling from barmaid Gemma!).

Most teams did reasonably well in the Pics, The Hasty Puddings and 3 Peaks, 2 Pints got 10 from 12. General Knowledge had most teams stumped though with top marks going to Mike Jone's, UK's Newest Millionaire (Idiots) with a respectable 8.

Q3 Who wrote the gothic horror Dracula?

Q5 When a Rottwieler and a Scottie dog somehow managed to have puppies in December 2013... what were the crossbreds named?

Going into the Music Round we had Phil's An Effing Traitor edging it on 17 followed by The Hasty Puddings and 3 Peaks, 2 Pints on 16 points.

Q13 Who had Number One hits in the 50s and 60s with Cumberland Gap and My Old Man’s a Dustman?

Q19 Sharleen Spiteri was the vocalist for which band formed in the late 80’s (in Glasgow)?

We thought the Music Round was reasonably easy and so did Phil's An Effing Traitor with an excellent 9 to win the round. Joint seconds on seven we had We Have Andy Carroll On Our Team, Heroes & Zeroes and Mike Jone's, UK's Newest Millionaire (Idiots).

So going into our snacks, beers (and smokes) break we had Phil's An Effing Traitor comfortably in the lead on 26 and two teams The Hasty Puddings and Mike Jone's, UK's Newest Millionaire (Idiots) just keeping in touch with 22s a piece. It looked like regulars Phil's An Effing Traitor were obviously not missing Phil!

After the break and the delicious free snacks of Wotsits, Thai Crackers and Onion Rings we were into what is usually the defining round of Sport.

Q25 Who was the top scorer for Newcastle United in season 1995-96 with 25 Premiership goals, third behind Robbie Fowler of Liverpool and Blackburn’s Alan Shearer?

Q28 Who won the gold medal in 1994 for the Men’s 100m race at the European Athletics Championship in Helsinki?

Sporty Superstars this week were Phil's An Effing Traitor with an excellent eight, then we had three teams runners up with sevens, We Have Andy Carroll On Our Team, The Hasty Puddings and 3 Peaks, 2 Pints.  This meant that going into the final round we had Phil's An Effing Traitor in what looked like an unassailable lead on 34 with their nearest challengers The Hasty Puddings five behind on 29 and Mike Jone's, UK's Newest Millionaire (Idiots) six off on 28.

Q31 Which actress starred alongside Michael Douglas in the 1992 movie Basic Instinct?

Q36 “Suits you, Sir” was a phrase associated with which 90’s comedy show?

The Film & TV round should have been a mere formality for regulars Phil's An Effing Traitor but they wobbled a bit getting just a six. Winners of the round were We Have Andy Carroll On Our Team with an excellent nine but challengers for the Quiz The Hasty Puddings and Mike Jone's, UK's Newest Millionaire (Idiots) only clawed back one point on the leaders with sixes so it was a hearty round of applause for our winners Phil's An Effing Traitor.

Could they draw the £90 Cash Prize though? Team member Will was presented with the three envelopes by Gemma, he hesitated momentarily then went for the one to his right, slowly unfurled the slip from inside and showed it to fellow team member Richard who announced… BEERS. Unlucky Will but great news for the Quiz as that means it's going to be well over £100 in the pot for Quiz 103.

Next up the final act of Quiz Night 102, the Wild Card Question. To enter is just £1 per person and for that you get a little coloured Post-It, this week a nice dayglo orange again, on which to write the answer to a single question that John reads out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in for The Wild Card. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling.

Chris had been busy getting The Wild Card entries in while the winners drew the envelopes and after the money was counted up John announced there was a decent £38.20 in cash (20p… who's the skinflint! It's £1) for the closest answer to the this question:

In the Sports Round we had a question asking which Caribbean islands Green Monkey Golf Course Tiger Woods got married at in 2004.

The island was Barbados and the Green Monkey Golf Course is named after the michevious little monkeys that live on the island. One of the signature holes on the course has a grassy island carved in the shape of a green monkey in a bunker close to the green. The Wild Card Question tonight is, what is the length of this downhill par 3 hole (in yards)?

fter all the orange Post-It's had been arranged on John's desk he made sure all the answers were in before announcing "if you're over 300 and under 200 your out!" he then went on to say that there were two answers extremely close, 3 Peaks, 2 Pints Chris was just two yards out but this weeks winner, just one yard shy of the actual answer was Phil "The Power" Mac. Tremendous, Phil was well happy as he collected what we think is his fourth (or maybe fifth) Wild Card Cash prize from Gemma. Well done Phil, £38 better off on the night, not bad for a quid stake!

That was Quiz 102 done, John signed off to a round of applause with his signature Good Night and God Bless. It had been an interesting night, plenty of laughs especially about the mechanics of making Wotties (the male was the Scottie!). Thanks to everyone who turned out for Quiz 102 we really appreciate your support.
