Well what an absolutely fabulous turnout for our first Quiz of 2014. We were worried that the lack of a decent Cash Prize and the 'dryjanuary' nonsense may deter a few of our regulars but they are obviously not swayed by the lure of cash and such nanny state rubbish as 13 teams and a tremendous 48 Quizzers in total took their seats for Quiz 101. Great stuff.
The Picture Round was They Checked Out In 2013 – celebs and other famous people we lost during the year… half of them probably used by Richard's crew as Team Names in previous Quizzes. The scores were fairly good for some with The Academy scoring 11 and The Everly Brother getting 10!
All the Questions for this New Year Special were 2013 based and most teams did fairly well in round one General Knowledge with 3s A Crowd and 3 Peaks, 2 Pints filling their boots with 10s.
Q2 During June which couple went for an al-fresco meal at Scott’s restaurant in Mayfair that led to a later date at the divorce court?
Q8 What was unknown crime writer Robert Galbraith’s well-kept secret which was leaked in July?
Early leaders after the opening rounds were The Everly Brother and The Academy on 19s.
Next up Music. The sympathetically named Michael Schumacher's Ski Instructor's (Ouch), The Everly Brother and The Academy tied the round on nines.
Q13 In April which acclaimed singer-songwriter, who hit blustery heights in the 70s and 80s received a CBE from Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle?
Q17 In November which controversial 80s frontman insisted on having his autobiography published as a Penguin Classic, only for critics to agree that the book was merely a classic of self-pity and peevish complaint?
So going into the snacks break The Everly Brother and The Academy were firmly in control, way ahead of the pack on 28s a piece.
After delicious Cheesy Balls, Thai Prawn Crackers and another crispy snack we moved onto the killer round, 2013 Sport.
Q24 How many European Cups have Bayern Munich now won after their victory in May?
Q26 After an F1 Grand Prix in May Kimi Raikkonen said which other F1 driver needed “punching in the face” after an incident strewn race?
To be fair most teams did well in Sport. Michael Schumacher's Ski Instructor's, The Milk Snatchers and The Academy topped the round with nines but the former Quiz joint leaders The Everly Brother crashed with a poor six. This meant going into the final round TV & Films The Academy were 37, three ahead of The Everly Brother on 34 with Michael Schumacher's Ski Instructor's on 33 and The Milk Snatchers on 32.
Q34 Which American city did Glasgow stand in for in the zombie thriller World War Z released in June?
Q37 Why was an ex-prison officer called Sam Bailey given a business contract worth £1m in December?
It was The Academy's to lose… and they nearly did by scoring just five in Film & TV! The winners of the round were The Everly Brother and the Milk Snatchers on eights and the mathematicians amongst you will spot that meant a Dart Off between our two teams that had led from the beginning, The Everly Brother and The Academy. Quiz Master John was well excited.
After an enthralling Dart Off it was Phil 'The Power' Mac from The Everly Brother team that emerged champion, Michael H from The Academy just not able to make up on Phil's devastating first throw of 72.
There was a round of applause from everyone at the bar for the winners of Quiz 101, The Everly Brother and it was now down to the drawing of the envelopes. The designated team member went for the right of the three envelopes on offer from Gemma and as she slowly unfurled the slip inside it revealed… Food Vouchers! Unlucky, great for next week though as that means a £48 Rollover.
Next up the final act of the New year Quiz 101, the wild Card Question. To enter is just £1 per person and for that you get a little coloured Post-It, this week a nice dayglo orange, on which to write the answer to a single question that John reads out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in for The Wild Card. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling.
Gemma had been busy getting The Wild Card entries in while the Dart Off took place and after the money was counted up John announced there was a massive £41 in cash for the closest answer to the following question:
In the Film & TV Round the Final Question was about the Irish Actor Colm Meaney who starred as the villain Pat Farrell in the Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa film released in August.
Colm is probably most famous for his record appearances in seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and seven seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, between 1987 and 1999.
The Wild Card Question tonight is how many episodes in total of both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine did Colm appear in?
After all the answers were in and quite a while filtering through the guesses, which ranged from under 100 to over 5,000, John announced there were two that were very, very close… Charlie Smith was 14 off the actual total but the winner, just 12 off the answer we were after was Mary Poppins who scooped the third highest Wild Card Prize ever of £41.
What a result – there was a hearty round of applause as Mary Poppins stepped up to the bar to collect her £41... for just a quid stake!
Great night, good fun and John Signed off with his usual Good Night and God Bless. Thanks to everyone for turning out for the New Year Quiz 101 we thoroughly enjoyed it, hope you did too and we appreciate your support.
Apologies for the short review (pressures of work) we'll try and add some sample questions and links to interesting stuff over the next few days.
