We had a canny turnout for Quiz 140, 28 Quizzers over seven teams took the Cash Prize on offer to £76... shame it wasn’t four more to make it a big eight zero!
For those not footy aware, Quiz Master John’s Team of choice, Sunderland AFC, had been absolutely hammered 8-0 by Southampton the previous Saturday. We were actually amazed he turned up as having a pub full of Newcastle supporters he had every right to throw a sicky but to his credit he didn’t and took the inevitable banter with good humour.
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was “Saturday's magic number" which everyone who read the Preview had sussed was eight (obviously) and it was phrases involving or relating to the number.
Quiz Master John, suffering already with the constant references to eights gave our teams a few minutes to examine the Pics before beginning the Quiz with our first ten questions on General Knowledge. Just to set the tone of the evening we’ll give you the first couple of questions as well as the ones we’ve picked out…
Q1 If you subtracted the Roman Numerals VI from XIV what number would you be left with?
Q2 Which English Port is at the mouth of the River Itchen?
John had sussed where this was going!
As usual as the round wore on the questions gradually got a little more challenging and less eight nil, Sunderland or Southampton related…
Q5 Which main ingredient would you expect to find in a Dopiaza curry?
Q9 What did Colonel Thomas Blood famously attempt to steal in 1671?
After the General Knowledge Round Quiz Master John gave the Teams a few minutes to look over their answers before calling in the Pics Round and Answer Sheet for marking.
Most teams did reasonably well in the Pics Round, The Peoples Front Of Judea managing a very good 10 whilst The Ebola Ling Stone, She and Him, Lee Mack’s Monday Moonlight and the excellently named Vito Manone’s Teflon Gloves (Idiots) returned nines. Hammers, Hornets and Saints* came third scoring a significant eight.
*Again for those not in the know, this team name refers to all of the clubs that have give Sunderland a good towzing in years gone by… Hammers (West Ham) walloped them 8-0 in 1968, Hornets (Watford) stuffed them 8-0 in 1982 and obviously the most recent humiliation Saints (Southampton) 8-0 in 2014.
The General Knowledge Round proved a little more difficult for some teams but not for Hammers, Hornets and Saints along with Sunderland Saw More Balls Than A Whore! who tied for top place on nines. In second we had an eight from Vito Manone’s Teflon Gloves (Idiots) and in third both The Peoples Front Of Judea and Lee Mack’s Monday Moonlight on sevens a piece.
The combined scores gave us a leader board at this early stage of The Peoples Front Of Judea, Hammers, Hornets and Saints and Vito Manone’s Teflon Gloves (Idiots) leading the pack on 17s, Lee Mack’s Monday Moonlight on 16 and in joint third The Ebola Ling Stone and She and Him on 15s.
Next up, the Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from 70s TVs to Wordy Rappinghood:
Q11 Who took a Walk on the Wild Side in 1973?
Q18 In the 80s Tom Tom Club was formed by two members of which famous band?
Number one spot in Music for Quiz 140 we had Hammers, Hornets and Saints with an eight. Back in second The Peoples Front Of Judea and Vito Manone’s Teflon Gloves (Idiots) on sixes a piece whilst bringing up the rear in third position Sunderland Saw More Balls Than A Whore! and Lee Mack’s Monday Moonlight on fives.
This gave the leader board a slightly different look going into the snack break with Hammers, Hornets and Saints sneaking into a two point lead on 25. The Peoples Front Of Judea and Vito Manone’s Teflon Gloves (Idiots) were now joint seconds on 23 with Lee Mack’s Monday Moonlight in third on 21.
We then had our usual five minute break for topping up drinks and sampling the delicious free savouries. Then it was back to the Quiz and the round that had Quiz Master John worried this week… Sport. Here’s a couple of examples:
Q28 Originating from Santa Monica, California, during the early 1920s, which ball game became an Olympic sport in 1996?
Q29 Who was the first player to score five goals in a Premier League game? And for a bonus who was it against?
Lee Mack’s Monday Moonlight played a blinder in Sport this week to win the round with an excellent 11. Vito Manone’s Teflon Gloves (Idiots) did better than there namesake by just dropping a couple to come in second on 10 jointly with The Peoples Front Of Judea. Then we had another two teams on nines, The Ebola Ling Stone and She and Him. Hammers, Hornets and Saints curiously scored another eight, surely they couldn’t be scoring eights on purpose could they?
The Sport scores gave us a rather congested leader board going into the final Film & TV Round with four teams in a position to win. Joint leaders The Peoples Front Of Judea, Hammers, Hornets and Saints and Vito Manone’s Teflon Gloves (Idiots) all had 33 points and Lee Mack’s Monday Moonlight were right up there with 32. Who would triumph with questions along the lines of these:
Q32 In the movies, Optimus Prime, Bumble Bee and Megatron are what?
Q37 In the 80s series Dallas, Linda Gray played which character?
Well they bottled it for a hat trick of eights – Hammers, Hornets and Saints went and won the round and therefore the Quiz with an excellent ten in Film & TV. Second with nine and therefore runners up in the Quiz as well we had The Peoples Front Of Judea who are becoming experts and just being pipped at the post. Third in the round were Sunderland Saw More Balls Than A Whore!
So after a deserved round of applause the teams hushed as winning team member Richard went for the left of the three envelopes he was given the choice of by Barmaid Gemma. He slowly unfolded the enclosed slip of paper and to everyones delight announced Food Vouchers! Hard lines for Hammers, Hornets and Saints but I’m sure they will be there or thereabouts at the Quiz next week where we have a potential £100+ Cash Prize to play for
Up next was the usual Wild Card Question to finish off the night.
To enter is just £1 per person and for that you get a little coloured Post-It, this week a nice dayglo pink again (Post-It's once more sponsored by Infinite Design), on which to write the answer to a single question that John reads out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling. Gemma quickly did the rounds getting the £1 entries in and for Quiz 140 we had a decent £24 in for the prize. The question was:
In the Sports Round we asked who was the first player to score five goals in a Premier League game? It was of course former Newcastle favourite Andy Cole.
The game was against Ipswich Town in March 1995 and in total Manchester United put an embarrassing nine goals past a hapless Craig Forrest in the Tractor Boys goal to win the game by a record Premiership score of 9-0.
The Wild Card Question tonight is, in what minute of the game did Andy Cole score the third of his five goals that day?
After double checking that everyone was in John quickly whittled the entries down. Anyone in the first half forget it, all those over 60 minutes were binned as were those under 50. This left two, Alex the Great and Gary, both with the same guess, which happened to be the correct answer so it was a Dart Off!
John was over the moon, the answer wasn’t eight and it was a Dart Off to boot. Both our winners made their way to the oche and it was Gary who was up first. With his three darts he managed a reasonable 36, so the pressure was all on Alex. John reminded him there was no pressure, it was only £24 at stake and that spurred Alex on to throw 24. Well done to Gary, £24 in his sky rocket courtesy of The Colly Wild Card Question.
With that John, probably quite happily wrapped up Quiz 140 and thanked everyone for turning out before signing off with his usual Goodnight and God Bless. At least it should be another thirty odd years before he has to endure another night of banter hosting The Colly Quiz following an 8-0 defeat… hold on, who are Sunderland up against next, oh yes, Arsenal!
