We were hoping for a bumper turnout for Quiz 141, a good crowd could boost the Cash Prize on offer to over a £100. What we got on the night was a magnificent 36 Quizzers over nine teams which took the Cash Prize to an amazing £113.

You couldn’t get a seat in the bar, there were teams in we hadn’t seen in months along with a few new faces, as we said a couple of weeks ago, we can’t work this Quiz out at all but hey who cares if we get turnouts like this once in a while!

The cryptic clue for the Picture Round theme on the Quiz Preview this week was "Old (and new) Master creates selfie”. The clever quizzers would have sussed we were going to have a round on self portraits.

The clue on our Quiz Preview this week was "Old (and new) Master creates selfie”.

Quiz Master John gave our teams a few minutes to consider the Artists Selfies before beginning the Quiz with our first ten questions on General Knowledge. As usual, a couple of easy questions first, then as the round wore on they gradually got a little more arduous:

Q1 Who was the first man to set foot on the moon?
Q5 What did Jef Raskin, Manager of Publications for Steve jobs name the Macintosh computer after?

After the General Knowledge Round Quiz Master John gave the Teams a few minutes to resolve their answers before calling in their Pics Round and Answer Sheet for marking.

Most teams did fairly well in the Artists Selfies Picture Round, Trash Talk won it with a ten, then with nines we had a trio of teams, Quiz Park Rangers, She & Him and the topically named Wes Brown / Vito Mannone Dream Team. Just behind in third were Jayson & The Argonauts on eight.

The General Knowledge Round proved just as testing. She & Him were top of the pile with a nine, in second Wes Brown / Vito Mannone Dream Team. Then five teams on sevens tied for third!

The combined scores gave us a leader board at this early stage of She & Him making an early charge with 18, close behind in second place on 17 were Trash Talk and Wes Brown / Vito Mannone Dream Team and then in third spot Quiz Park Rangers with fifteen.

Next up, the Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from The Carpenters to Musicals and quite a lot of other stuff in between:

Q12 Which musical instrument did Karen Carpenter play?
Q14 Which musical opens with the song Food Glorious Food?

Top of the charts in Music this week were the Wes Brown / Vito Mannone Dream Team with a seriously good 12 points, second spot went to She & Him on a 10 and then both S.K.A and Winners Corner tied for third on nines a piece.

This gave the leader board a rare appearance as we went into the snack break. Two teams were forging ahead several points ahead of the pack, Wes Brown / Vito Mannone Dream Team were in the lead on 29 but there was a big round of applause for second placed She & Him on a magnificent 28. The best scores from the chasing pack were a 24 for Trash Talk and a 23 for Winners Corner.

We then had our usual five minutes for topping up drinks and sampling the delicious free savouries, this week consisting of Onion Rings, Salt & Vinegar (or Chilli flavoured) peanuts and Flame Grilled Chorizo with Roasted Onion Flavoured Crisps (‘posh’ or what?). Then it was back to the Quiz and the round that usually clarifies the standings, Sport. Here’s a couple of examples:

Q22 Which company were the first sponsors of the Premier League in 1993?
Q28 Who did baseball legend Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio marry in January, 1954?

Crossing the line first in Sport this week we had Winners Corner with a tape busting nine. It was a photo finish for second as Quiz Park Rangers, She & Him and Jayson & The Argonauts were all on eight and third on sevens a piece Trash Talk and Wes Brown / Vito Mannone Dream Team.

This gave us an intriguing leaders board going into the final Film & TV Round. She & Him were having a blinder, already surpassing their usual mid thirtyish final score with 36 going into the Film & TV Round, they were up against the Wes Brown / Vito Mannone Dream Team who also had 36. Barring a meltdown by both teams, allowing current third placed Winners Corner to sneak in on the blind side, it was between the joint leaders – who would triumph with questions along the lines of these:

Q36 Travis Bickle is the anti-hero in which 1976 movie? And for a bonus name the actor who played Travis?
Q37 What 90s BBC Comedy show do you associate with the 13th Duke of Wybourne, Unlucky Alf and Professor Denzil Dexter, University Of Southern California? And for a bonus point who played the first two of the characters mentioned?

Winners of the Film and TV were Jayson & The Argonaut and Winners Corner with tens. We had five teams who finished second in the round with nine, Vito Mannone’s Teflon Boots (Idiots), S.K.A, Trash Talk and yes, you’ve guessed it She & Him and the Wes Brown / Vito Mannone Dream Team. John was beside himself… Dart Off!

The Dart Board floodlight went on and our two contenders stepped up. For She & Him it was obviously Him, Rob (well She, Amy is eight months pregnant!) and for the Wes Brown / Vito Mannone Dream Team we had... The Joker?

The Joker was up to the oche first, not a bad score of 32 considering he couldn't see a thing!

John gives Rob some last minute tips which resulted in 21 scored.

The Joker managed 30 on his second shot. He's even better without the mask apparently.

John, with a quick bit of manual calculation, updated the crowd and Rob how many he needed to win.

Rob didn't manage it but sportingly congratulated The Joker on his win.

The Joker, who admitted he couldn’t see ‘an ‘effing thing’ in his mask was up to the oche first. He threw south paw and managed a reasonable 32. Rob was up next, he replied with an unlucky 21. The Joker returned and this time he threw 30 so Rob needed 42 to win. It didn’t go well, even with the crowd behind him he just managed 23, Joker and the Wes Brown / Vito Mannone Dream Team had the win.

Richard (AKA Joker) chose the left of the three envelopes on offer from Gemma at the bar. He opened the slip of paper and was genuinely over the moon to get the beers, he (and his team, as well as the other teams involved) want the cash price to keep rolling over to make it a monumental amount to win… and so do we! So it could be, with a similar turnout, over £150 to play for next week.

Up next was the usual Wild Card Question to finish the night.

To enter is just £1 per person and for that you got a little coloured Post-It, this week a nice dayglo yellow (Post-It's once more sponsored by Infinite Design), on which to write the answer to a single question that John reads out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling. Gemma quickly did the rounds getting the £1 entries in and for Quiz 141 we had a decent £28 in for the prize. The question was:

This weeks Picture Round was selfies by famous artists, one of which was Roy Lichenstein.

Lichtenstein is probably best known for his pop art paintings Drowning Girl and Whaam! but his biggest selling painting was neither of these. The record price for one of Roy’s works, a bizarre cubist cartoon entitled ‘Woman with flowered hat’, was paid at auction in May 2013.

The Wild Card Question tonight is how many million US Dollars was the painting sold for?

After confirming several times that everyone was in John started by discounting everyone under $50 million, which left a few but there were just two closest to the answer. Chris Morgan had $61 but he was pipped at the post again… this time by S.K.A  Karen who was $1 million closer with $60 million. As Chris bemoaned his luck once more Karen cheerfully accepted the £28 in readies from our lovely barmaid Gemma.

With that John brought Quiz 141 to a close, thanking everyone for turning out before signing off to a round of appreciative applause with his usual Goodnight and God Bless.

Once more it was a hugely entertaining night, let’s hope we see you all again next week where we could be playing for a Cash Prize of over £140.
