It had been a quiet Bank Holiday Easter Monday, maybe everyone had been partying too much from Good Friday to Easter Sunday!
We eagerly waited to see how many teams would arrive to play for the potential £140 plus prize on the night. Hopefully we would get quite a few but you never know on these Bank Holidays.
Quiz Master John was unavailable… Quiz Master Chris, who filled in admirably for Quiz 114 had been out on the lash all day and understandably wasn't keen, so yours truly stepped into the chair at the last minute for Quiz 116.
We started off with just £131 in the pot, meaning only 20 quizzers had turned up. The Prize Money then jumped to £134 as another two team members joined and as we were about to get started with the General Knowledge even more late comers arrived to take the final Cash Prize on offer to £137. Excellent, seven teams 26 Quizzers.
Our Picture Round for Quiz 116 was Egg Heads, pictures of clever people photoshopped onto an Easter Egg wrapper.
Whilst our teams scratched their heads over the Egg Heads we kicked off the Quiz with our usual ten questions on General Knowledge.
Our first round started off fairly easy then got a bit serious:
Q2 What is the Beaufort Scale used to measure?
Q8 In which year did the Titanic sink on its maiden voyage?
The Pics round wasn't as well researched by our teams as usual, well the clue in the Preview was a bit vague. Top in spotting the Egg Heads were Jesmond Jesters with an excellent 11 from 12. Second we had two teams on nines, Pardew For Man U and The Idiots with the rest getting eights and sevens.
There was a mixed bag of results in the General Knowledge, Pardew For Man U bossed the round with a nine, then we had a trio of teams on sevens, Jesmond Jesters, the topically named Cross His Feet I've Only Brought Three Nails! and The Idiots with the rest getting sixes, fives and two's (Where's Our Team? obviously missing a few key players!).
Going into the Music Round it was fairly close, Jesmond Jesters and Pardew For Man U were quick off the mark with 18s a piece and The Idiots were lurking in second place with 16.
The Music Round had questions ranging from rap to opera with everything else, including a question on Hymns! (?), in between:
Q18 In the 2012 MTV Music Video Awards the Best Female Video went to Starships by Nicki Minaj. Where was the video filmed?
Q20 With which Spanish opera singer did Freddie Mercury record the 1992 Olympic anthem Barcelona?
Top of the Pops this week we had The Idiots getting a near perfect 10. Second on nines were Jesmond Jesters and Cross His Feet I've Only Brought Three Nails! with the rest getting sevens and below.
So going into the break for snacks, beers (and smokes) it was getting as tight as a gnats chuff, Jesmond Jesters were nosing ahead with a 27, The Idiots were right up there with 26 and Pardew For Man U had 25.
After the break and the delicious free snacks it was back to the round that can make or break a team… Sport.
Q22 What is the name of Swansea City’s controversial mascot who amongst other things has been involved in several fights with the opposing teams mascot?*
Q27 Who did Pat Cash beat in the 1987 Wimbledon Men’s Final?
*Have a gander at the YouTube clip in the answers below of the Dutch interview with the guy who is the mascot… he's off his nut.
Sport sorted the strikers from the subs, Cross His Feet I've Only Brought Three Nails! scored an eight to win the round. We then had Pardew For Man U and The Idiots on sevens with the others on fives and below, including former leaders Jesmond Jesters returning just a two! (Guys, you need to add a team member who specialises in Sport).
The Sports results shook things up a bit, the leaders were now The Idiots on 33, followed by Pardew For Man U on 32 and Cross His Feet I've Only Brought Three Nails! on 31 so it was still tight as a gnats chuff. Jesmond Jesters were a close fourth with 29 but their poor Sports Round had left them with just a slim chance of getting back into it.
Next up was apparently the Music & TV Round until Gemma, on the ball as usual, corrected me, it was of course the Film & TV Round.
Q31 Which singer played the title role in the 1996 movie Evita? And for a bonus point who directed the movie?
Q36 In the TV Comedy Father Ted which celebrity did Dougal and Ted meet in the Caves?
Film and TV buffs this week were the Jesmond Jesters who valiantly tried to correct their poor Sports Round with an excellent 10. Second we had Cross His Feet I've Only Brought Three Nails! on 9.5 which meant by virtue of a half a point they won Quiz 116. Unlucky Pardew For Man U who scored an eight in the round to reach 40 and The Idiots who did a Keegan, throwing away their lead by scoring just six they drew in third place with the Jesmond Jesters on 39.
A bit of controversy though as Pardew For Man U immediately questioned where the half point had come from to give Cross His Feet I've Only Brought Three Nails! the win.
There was a question in the Film & TV which had a bonus attached, name the character as well as the writer, Cross His Feet I've Only Brought Three Nails! had named the character forename but not the surname so they got a half point for the attempt which I felt was only fair. Pardew For Man U hadn't answered the bonus so they accepted that and were gracious in defeat. Fair bunch our Quizzers.
Phil from Cross His Feet I've Only Brought Three Nails! was handed the task of choosing the winning envelope from the three Gemma had fanned out in her hand, he went middle, slowly unfolded the enclosed slip of paper and with a confident grin announced Cash Prize! There was a slightly muted round of applause, our other Quiz Teams would have preferred the rollover to continue to big money but that's the luck of the draw.
They are a generous bunch our regular team this week called Cross His Feet I've Only Brought Three Nails! They put £17 back in the pot so we could have a prize of £50+ for Quiz 117.
Next up was the finale of Quiz 117, The Wild Card Question. To enter is just £1 per person and for that you get a little slip of Colly Raffle Ticket paper to write the answer to a single question (we used to have little dayglo Post-It's but hey times are hard). The answer we are looking for is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling.
Chris had been busy getting The Wild Card entries as the winners were choosing the envelope and he returned to the bar with £22 in the pot for the answer closest this question:
In the Film and TV round we asked a question about the TV series The Waltons.
The Waltons story spans 213 episodes and was originally broadcast from 1971 to 1981. Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia the series revolved around the trials and tribulations of a 1930's family living through the American Great Depression.
One of the main characters, Olivia Walton, the mother of the family, didn't appear in every episode due to a twist in the plot. In the real world the actress Michael Learned just got sick of asking John Walton if he wanted more coffee and went off to pursue other things.
The wild card question tonight is how many episodes of The Waltons did the character Olivia Walton NOT appear in?
After repeating the business end of the question again our entrants slowly started dropping their Collingwood Arms Raffle Tickets on the Quiz Masters Desk, this week me. After verifying everyone was in I started to weed the winners out from the also rans. First everyone over 60 was out, then everyone under 30 was binned which left six slips of paper, four were close but not close enough but we had two with exactly the same answer, 47 for Sarah S and Chris R – so we had a Dart Off for the first time in ages for the Wild Card (John will be disappointed, he loves a good dart Off he does).
Chris elected to go first and after finding where the oche was he threw his first three darts and scored a reasonable 34. Sarah stepped up and replied with 37, it was close stuff. Chris then managed a double top in his second round of 63 to give him a grand total of 97. Sarah needed 61 to win, difficult but not impossible. She threw a great score of 40 but obviously that wasn't enough, the double top had given Chris the prize of £22. Chris was a happy man as he took his winnings, not a bad return for a quid stake.
So that was it, Quiz 116 was done and dusted. Thanks to everyone who turned up your support is really appreciated. Hopefully regular Quiz Master John will be back in the chair for Quiz 117 although I must admit I quite enjoyed being Quiz Master for the night.
