We thought it would be a good idea to have a World Cup Special Quiz to celebrate the greatest sporting competition on the planet kicking off on Thursday. All our Questions were to be on the World Cup or Brazil or at the very least have a South American connection (as we ran out of Brazil Questions!).
We were delighted when nine teams and 31 people turned up on a balmy Monday night. This took the tempting Cash Prize on offer to a £82. Fantástico!
The Picture Quiz this week was based on the BBC's all time top XI World Cup players feature they had running on their website. We posted a clue up on the Quiz Preview five or six days prior to the Quiz to give our contestants plenty of time to research. We even printed instructions on the back of the Picture Quiz as we knew there would be questions asked!
First up we had our ten General Knowledge questions loosely based on Brazil. Caramba eles eram difíceis!
Q4 Which continent was Brazil adjacent to when it was part of the supercontinent Pangea millions of years ago?
Q7 Brazil is famous for it’s Annual Carnival. The term carnival derives from the italian or latin term for the removal or a farewell to what?
Most of our teams did well in the Picture Round, there was some controversy over the holding midfielder and the right winger but we hadn't expected anything else! Four teams managed nine of the 12; Control Freaks, Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (Idiots), Quiz Akabussi (1) and Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (2) and two teams, Quiz Akabussi (2) and Brazil Nuts tied on eight.
In all of our 123 Quizzes we don't think we have ever had two teams with the same name and here we had two sets of duplicate names… inacreditável!
The General Knowledge returned some good scores as well. Quiz Akabussi (2) and Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (2) were top of the pile with nines a piece and Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (Idiots) came in second with an eight (these duplicate names could get confusing).
Next up in a change of format we had the Sport Round as we had the eagerly anticipated Sound Round after the break. So going into the round everyone loves to hate a little earlier than usual we had Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead off on a flyer with 18, Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (Idiots) and Quiz Akabussi (2) on 17s and Control Freaks with Quiz Akabussi (1) on 16.
Our Sport Round had World Cup and Brazilian Sport Questions along the lines of these:
Q11 In what other sport apart from Football are the Brazilian’s currently one of the most successful nations?
Q15 Which Brazilian is the only player who has played in three World Cup final matches?
Top of the Group table this week we had Quiz Akabussi (1) with a magnífico ten and then we had three teams tied on eights Quiz Akabussi (2), Brazil Nuts and The Occasionals. Our regular team (Sarah and Co) this week called Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (2) had an absolute meltdown in a round they usually do well on returning just four… who had the pen this week?
So going into the break for snacks, beers (and smokes) we had Quiz Akabussi (1) leading the pack on 26, just ahead of their namesake Quiz Akabussi (2) on 25 and Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (Idiots) on 23. Foi emocionante!
After the break and the delicious free snacks of Bacon Rashers, Onion Rings and Peanuts it was on to the much anticipated Sound Round.
We had ten sounds, Quiz Master John read out the question first then we played the sound. Here's a couple of examples:
Q25 Who’s countdown to the 1994 World Cup was this?
Q26 This is the official World Cup Song for which country at this years World Cup?
The final question of the Sound round was unintentionally a bit of a giveaway, it was the Portuguese phrase for Where is the toilet? which went horribly wrong as the sound file went immediately on to play the first sound again… the incessant rasping of the Vuvuzela. Four teams still managed to get it wrong… surpreendente!
Five of our teams managed a magnificent 10 on the Sound Round; Control Freaks, Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (Idiots), Quiz Akabussi (2), Brazil Nuts and Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (2).
That meant it was fairly tight going into the final round Film & TV (with a Brazil flavour). In prime slot we had Quiz Akabussi (2) on 35. Joint second we had three teams still in with a shout on 33; Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (Idiots), Quiz Akabussi (1) and Brazil Nuts, plus Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (2) still with an outside chance on 32, despite their dreadful Sports Round.
Q32 Michael Caine, Bobby Moore, Max von Sydow and Osvaldo Ardiles starred in which eighties film set in World War II?
Q35 Who is traveling Into the Unknown for a BBC documentary about Brazil?
We had three teams with tens on the final round, Brazil Nuts which took them to a total of 43… Drop Dead Fred Drop Dead (2), which took them to a total of 42 and Quiz Akabussi (2) which took them to a winning score of 45! So it was well done and a round of applause for our winners.
Now it was down to drawing the Prize Envelope. Our designated team member from the winners Quiz Akabussi (2) made his way to the front of the bar, barman Chris fanned out three envelopes, which one would Quiz Akabussi (2) go for? Some people were whispering Beers or Food. He made his choice, right, opened the envelope, unfolded the piece of paper and read out… Food Vouchers!
Hard lines Quiz Akabussi (2), unlucky you didn't get the Cash Prize but we are sure you will enjoy the free food. Great news for the Quiz though as that means there is a whopping £82 rollover for Quiz 124.
Next up the closing ceremony of our World Cup Special, The Wild Card Question. To enter is just £1 per person and for that you get a little slip of Colly Raffle Ticket paper to write the answer to a single question (we used to have little dayglo Post-It's but the Infinite Design sponsored ones have gone, anyone else wish to sponsor the Post-It's?).
The Wild Card answer we are looking for is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling.
Barman Chris had been busy getting The Wild Card entries and he returned to the bar with £26 in the pot for the answer closest to this question:
In the Sports Round we asked of the 12 cities hosting the 2014 World Cup in Brazil which city is furthest south and which city lies furthest north?
The furthest city south lies 715 miles from Rio and the furthest north lies 1,756miles from Rio. The Wild Card Question tonight is how far are these two cities from each other?
Quiz Master John read the question out again for those who were hard of hearing and then allowed a couple of minutes for everyone to get their guesses in. The slips of paper started to pile up on John's Desk and after a few more minutes, he asked if there were anymore before proceeding to take everyone with guesses below 1,500 miles out, there were groans. Then he took any answers that were above 2,000 miles out, to more groans.
We had three left in. Jay was close but not close enough, Richard was closer but not as close as Robin H who was just 19 miles out! So to resounding applause Robin won what must be his fourth or even fifth Wild Card and looked made up as he collected his £26 Cash prize. Not bad for an enjoyable World Cup Special night out… parabéns Robin!
That was it, John signed off with a Goodnight and God Bless and our World Cup Special drew to a close. Thanks to everyone for turning out and we do hope to see you all (and hopefully some more) to contest for a potential £110+ Cash Prize at Quiz 124.
