After a miserable day of rain the weather perked up in the evening and it was a sultry and humid night by the time our teams started turning in for Quiz 122. By nine we had 26 people involved and eight teams ready to play for the potential £51 Cash prize.

Quiz Master John was back and in fine fettle following his night off last week where Chris from the Idiots team had done a fine job of filling in.

The Picture Quiz for Quiz 122 was a bit risqué, inspired by the Eurovision winner (bloke with a beard in a dress) we delved into the whole transexual thing. The result of a lot of research that took the whole weekend was the Female or Shemale Porn Stars Picture Quiz!

Oooh errr, the clue on the Preview this week was... "Bit risqué this week! Inspired by Eurovision? "

It didn't go down anywhere near as badly as the Mr Men Quiz from ages ago and most teams, a little bemused, just got stuck in but as Quiz Master John said after marking, a lot of our blokes need to be wary if they go for a holiday in Thailand.

The First ten questions on General Knowledge were a little less controversial. Here's a couple of examples:

Q3 What name is given to the outermost region of the Sun’s atmosphere?

Q9 One of the main components of a modern computers video card is the GPU a chip which controls the video output. What does the abbreviation GPU stand for?

After collating all of the answers for both the Pics and the General Knowledge the teams scored like this. In the Picture Round there were no experts on the Females or Shemales, top score went to Shidiots with 10 from a possible 12, second we had two teams on nines, Pussy Galore and Happy Birthday Charlie Watts and in third She & Him with an eight. An interesting side effect of this picture round is that the web hits for thecolly.co.uk will go through the roof due to content keywords such as shemale and porn stars… we'll report on that in a couple of weeks!

Most teams did pretty well in General Knowledge, Pussy Galore and Happy Birthday Charlie Watts both managed tens, She & Him did well with an eight and Shidiots managed a seven.

So going into the Music Round it was even-steven's at the top of the leaders board with Pussy Galore and Happy Birthday Charlie Watts on 19 followed closely by Shidiots on 17 and She & Him on 16.

This week we had music questions ranging from 70's Punk Poet's to stadium Super Groups with a few others in between:

Q16 Splat / Twat was a 1979 single release by which Lancashire born Punk Poet?

Q18 What track from U2’s album The Joshua Tree won a Grammy for its video in 1989?

Top Pop Pickers this week were She & Him with an excellent eight. In number two position were Happy Birthday Charlie Watts on a seven and in third we had the trio of 2 Legged, Heroes To Zeroes and Quiztian Bale.

Following the Music scores Happy Birthday Charlie Watts edged into the lead on 26 with Pussy Galore and She & Him on 24.

After our standard five minute break and the delicious free savouries of tasty hedgehogs, bubble crisps and some weird shaped but deliciously spicy snacks it was on with the round that sorts the winners from the also rans… Sport.

Q22 In which 90s football tournament did Paul Gascoigne become famous for blubbing? And for a bonus point what was the year?

Q29 What year saw the centenary of the modern Olympic Games?

Leaders Happy Birthday Charlie Watts steamed ahead in this round with an excellent 11 points. On their tail were Pussy Galore with 10 and then the rest of the contenders were struggling with nines and below.

This gave us Happy Birthday Charlie Watts comfortably in the lead with 37 going into the last round, three ahead of Pussy Galore on 34 and five ahead of Shidiots and She & Him on 31. The leaders had a problem though… their Film & TV expert Sarah S was in Glasgow at The Eagles concert and the other team members aren't Film & TV specialists... so although they were three ahead they were actually quite vulnerable. Here's a couple of sample questions:

Q32 Who wrote the novels upon which the 1970s films The Stud and The Bitch were based?

Q39 What was the title of the 90s ill-fated and short-running BBC soap set in a Spanish resort? And for a bonus point what year did the BBC cancel the show?

Winning the final round we had three teams on six, Pussy Galore giving them a final Quiz score of 40, Shidiots giving them 37 and Heroes To Zeroes giving them 35. Second with fives were Drum 'n' Bass and She & Him giving them final scores of 31 and 36 respectively but where were Happy Birthday Charlie Watts? They needed at least a score of four to avoid a Dart Off and that's exactly what they got! So by the skin of their collective teeth Happy Birthday Charlie Watts won Quiz 122 with a final score of 41.

The three guys from Happy Birthday Charlie Watts got a good round of applause as Gemma sauntered over to their table with three envelopes to choose from. Designated team member Will went left, opened the envelope and unfolded the enclosed slip of paper which he showed to Gemma… Beers, unlucky Will but great news for Quiz 123 as that means we start with £51 in the pot.

Next up it was the Wild Card Question. To enter is just £1 per person and for that you once more got a little coloured Post-It, again this week a nice dayglo orange (Post-It's sponsored by Infinite Design for the fourth week), on which to write the answer to a single question that John reads out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling.

Chris had been busy getting The Wild Card entries in as John had been totting up the final scores and by the time Happy Birthday Charlie Watts had got their prize there was a decent £23 in the jar for the answer closest to this Sport related question:

In the Sports Round we asked what year saw the centenary of the modern Olympic Games? The year was 1996 and the venue was the US City of Atlanta.

The games that year had athletes from 197 nations competing in 26 different Sports. The Wild Card Question tonight is how many athletes were there in total at the 1996 Olympics?

Quiz Master John, repeated the question as usual but this week it was again more of an inspired guess based on the given facts that was needed.

John checked, then double checked that all of the Post-It's were in and then requested a calculator which was duly supplied by Amy from She & Him – a calculator's a necessity that all ladies carry in their handbag isn't it? The numbers were pretty high as was the answer so John was just being absolutely sure of his calculations.

First up, everyone under 9,000 were discounted, then everyone over 12,000 were also binned which left two. Ray H had the visually pleasing 11,111 but wasn't as close as Amy from She & Him who's calculator had obviously come in useful as she had the closer figure of 9,641. This was Amy's seventh Wild Card win which puts her just one off husband Rob's record eight wins and unbelievably means that together they have won over 12% of the Wild Cards since we started the Quiz! Stats aside Amy was well chuffed and got deserved applause as Gemma handed her the readies.

Quiz 122 drew to a close with Quiz Master John's usual Goodnight and God Bless. Excellent entertainment on a Monday night and we go again next week where it's a possible Cash Prize of £80+ with a good attendance. Thanks to everyone for turning out, it was a very enjoyable night.
