Nine teams turned in for Quiz 126 and the 33 Quizzers involved took the Cash Prize to a handsome £73 on the night. Great stuff, we were well happy to see some new faces as well as our usual crowd.
Quiz Master John on top form as usual kicked off the Quiz a little after nine after giving our teams a little time to study the stadia from the 2014 World Cup… a well difficult Picture Round! Those who follow the website had a slight advantage if they had sussed the clue on the Preview which this week read "Since the 12th of June we've seen some great games from each of these venues”. Obviously(?) a final World Cup Pics Round about the venues.
The first ten questions as usual were on General Knowledge, here’s a couple of examples:
Q6 In the Peanuts cartoon strip, what’s the name of Snoopy’s little yellow friend?
Q8 Which stunt legend attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon on a rocket motorbike called Skycycle X-2 in the seventies? And for a bonus point what was the year?
After marking up all of the answers for both the Pics and the General Knowledge the teams scored like this.
In the Picture Round only one of the teams had sussed the clue in the Preview. Well done to the sensitively named Jay Is A Cock! who got an impressive eight and in joint second was everyone else who got fours apart from Crack Addicts who managed a three. It was a hard Picture Round.
The General Knowledge scores this week were bizarre, five teams managed seven, three returned six and the brilliantly named Dactylogram’s - Strippers For Dinosaurs? (Idiots) were bringing up the rear with a five (The definition of Dactylogram was one of the questions).
So going into the Music Round Jay Is A Cock! were well out in the lead already with 15 due to their superiority in the Pics Round. Second we had Baroness Butler’s Sloshed, She & Him and Hey Ho, Let’s Go (And Now They All Have) on 11’s with a further four of our teams on 10.
This week we had music questions ranging from Musicals to mononyms along with regular questions like these…
Q15 In 2013 British Rapper Professor Green married which Made in Chelsea star?
Q20 Neon Noon, I Hear Voices, La Fée Verte and Goodbye Kiss are tracks from which 2012 Number 1 album?
Top of the Pops this week with a return of 11 points from a possible 12 we had Time Of The Month. Jay Is A Cock! and Hey Ho, Let’s Go (And Now They All Have) came in joint second with nines and then we had We’re Friends With Real Girls with an eight.
That set of results gave us a leaders board that looked like this: Jay Is A Cock! were well in the lead with a 24, Time Of The Month gained a bit of ground in Music to come in second on 21 and Hey Ho, Let’s Go (And Now They All Have) were in third spot with 20.
After our standard five minute break and the delicious free savouries this week consisting of Chipsticks, Hedgehogs and Bubble Chips, it was back to the round that usually KOs a couple of our teams… Sport. Here’s a sample couple of questions.
Q22 Which country is the home of hurling?
Q30 Which Briton is the only woman to have held the European, World, Commonwealth and Olympic 400m hurdles titles at the same time?
There was a mixed bag of results in Sport this week. First past the post was a tie between Jay Is A Cock! and Hey Ho, Let’s Go (And Now They All Have) with excellent scores of tens apiece. Second were Kronenburg with a decent seven then third we had a trio of teams on six; Baroness Butler’s Sloshed, We’re Friends With Real Girls and Dactylogram’s - Strippers For Dinosaurs? (Idiots). Unfortunately She & Him had a mare this week and propped up the rest with just a two.
After another high scoring round in Sport Jay Is A Cock! were now well out in front with 34. Hey Ho, Let’s Go (And Now They All Have) were in touching distance (just) four behind on 30 but without their Film & TV expert Sarah going into the final round it looked an impossible task. In third spot we had Time Of The Month on 26 but realistically unless we had a fail of epic proportions by the front two it looked like third was the best they could hope for on the night. Here’s a couple of Film & TV questions:
Q32 Which dancing duo's first film together was Flying Down to Rio?
Q35 In Two and a Half Men what did Charlies ex-fiance Mia teach for a living?
Joint top marks in the final round were sevens scored by She & Him (making amends for the Sport rounds disappointing two) and We’re Friends With Real Girls. On sixes we had Baroness Butler’s Sloshed, Hey Ho, Let’s Go (And Now They All Have), Kronenburg and yes you’ve guessed it, also with a six, taking their total score to 40 our winners on the night Jay Is A Cock!
Our usual winners, this week called Hey Ho, Let’s Go (And Now They All Have) were none too happy, blaming a dodgy picture round for their demise but Matt from this weeks champions ignored the catcalling and stepped up to choose from the three envelopes fanned out in Gemma’s hand. He went middle and the crowd eagerly waited to hear what he had drawn, after unfolding the piece of paper contained in the envelope Matt announced Beers and everyone cheered as this meant we had the £73 rolling over into Quiz 127. Excellent news for the Quiz, unlucky for team Jay Is A Cock! Never mind guys, enjoy the beers and come back next week do do it all again.
Next up it was the Wild Card Question. To enter is just £1 per person and for that you once more got a little coloured Post-It, this week a nice dayglo pink (Post-It's once more sponsored by Infinite Design), on which to write the answer to a single question that John reads out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling. Barman Chris had done the honours getting the £1 entries in and we had a not to be sniffed at £27 in for the prize. This weeks trivial nonsense was:
In the first round, General Knowledge, we asked What is the largest state of the United States of America? Most people got it right it was Alaska.
The second biggest state in the USA is Texas, which is pretty big.
The Wild Card Question tonight is, compared to the area of Alaska what is the area of Texas, as a percentage?
“Where the *$@! do you get these ridiculous questions?” was heard from one eager contestant but hey, if you knew the answer it wouldn’t be much of a Wild Card would it? The aim is to make the answer an educated guess at best, therefore everyone has a chance of winning, that’s the fun of it.
Quiz Master John, repeated the question as usual and emphasised that Texas was second to Alaska in size so the answer was between one and 100… well it was getting near closing time!
Once it looked like all the pink Post-It’s were in, John asked a final time if we had all of the entries before immediately announcing everyone over 50% was out! There were gasps around the bar as this left just two of the 27 entries on the table! With 21% we had a member of the winning team Jay Is A Cock - Part II (with an excellent illustration of said cock on his Post-It) but closer than that we Mrs B who was less than 1% out with her answer of 37.9%. The bar gave Mrs B a round of applause as she collected her £27 in cash looking well chuffed. Well done Mrs B.
That was it Quiz 126 was complete and John signed off with his usual Goodnight and God Bless. Thanks to everyone for turning out, it was a very enjoyable night and we hope you can all return for Quiz 127 where we could be playing for over £100 Cash Prize.
Here’s a couple of tips to help you win the Quiz: look on the Preview for a clue to the Picture Round a day or so before the Quiz and very importantly bring a Team Member who knows a bit about Sport!
