What a great turnout for Quiz 127! Ten Teams and 35 Quizzers took the total Cash Prize up to £109 – well worth a Monday night out (should you win it). There were also some more new faces in this week which is really encouraging, we are always pleased to see new Teams at The Colly Quiz.
Quiz Master John (in cracking form as usual) gave our teams a few minutes to study the picture round. Those who follow the Preview should have sussed the theme this week from the following clue "In the seventies my Granny used to love a good grapple on a Saturday afternoon" it could only be seventies wrestlers couldn’t it?
A little after nine John kicked off with our first ten questions on General Knowledge. Usual script, they started reasonably easy then…
Q3 In Greek mythology, which many-headed monster was killed by Hercules as one of his Twelve Labours? And for a bonus point what number labour (of the twelve) was it?
Q6 Bellatrix is the third brightest star in which constellation? And for a bonus what colour is the star Bellatrix?
Our Teams handed both their Pics and Answer Sheets in to Quiz Master John after the General Knowledge and following marking up the teams scored like this.
In the Picture Round She & Him won by two falls and a submission with an excellent 13. Two Teams, Taxi For Cook and Wot – No Jimmy Saville managed a reasonable 11 and Idiots Not Making Fun Of The News along with The Uneducated came in with tens.
The General Knowledge scores this week were all over the shop. Winning the round with an eight we had I Look Like The Next Door Neighbour In The Royle Family and in second with sevens Wot – No Jimmy Saville and The Uneducated. Then there were Teams with sixes through to threes… we didn’t think the General Knowledge was quite that hard this week!
So moving swiftly on to the Music Round at this early stage we had Wot – No Jimmy Saville just in the lead on 18 with She & Him and The Uneducated on 17.
For Quiz 127 we had music questions ranging from thirties musicals to dangerous confectionary along with regular questions like these…
Q13 What was the hit song with a part-animated music video that brought international fame for the band A-Ha in 1985? For a bonus point what is the bands nationality?
Q17 One Direction’s Zayn Malik became engaged to which Little Mix member in August 2013?
Topping the Charts with an excellent return of 11 points from a possible 12 we had Justin Slipped Me The Tongue who were way ahead of seconds in the round She & Him and The Uneducated on eights a piece.
The Music scores evened things up on the leader board going into the break for snacks with three teams, She & Him, Wot – No Jimmy Saville and The Uneducated tied in first on 25 points. Not far behind them were Idiots Not Making Fun Of The News on 23 and both I Look Like The Next Door Neighbour In The Royle Family and Justin Slipped Me The Tongue on 22's a piece.
After a five minute break sampling the delicious free savouries this week consisting of Savoury Hedgehogs, Bacon Rashers and some ‘uniquely’ flavoured Coated Peanuts, it was back to the round that can kibosh some of our regular Teams… Sport. Here’s a couple of the questions:
Q25 Which team won the 1988-89 Football League Championship with a 2-0 win in their final match of the season against fellow contenders Liverpool at Anfield?
Q29 With which French football club did Thierry Henry and Emmaunuel Petit begin their senior careers?
There were a couple of really good scores in Sport this week but plenty not so good! Idiots Not Making Fun Of The News and Wot – No Jimmy Saville were sporting legends both scoring an excellent 10, Taxi For Cook were near legends with a nine and then it mostly went downhill from there. She & Him along with The Uneducated, joint leaders coming into Sport slipped back in the running with sixes.
Going into the final round Film & TV it looked a two horse race with Wot – No Jimmy Saville galloping towards the finishing post on 35 and Idiots Not Making Fun Of The News just a couple of lengths behind on 33. She & Him and The Uneducated were an outside bet on 31 but it would take a major upset for both leaders to fail at the final hurdle. Here’s a couple of the Film & TV questions:
Q33 What type of animal is Wilbur in the 1973 animated movie Charlotte's Web?
Q38 In the seventies classic comedy The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin who was Reggie’s boss at Sunshine Desserts?
The Uneducated made a gallant attempt at getting back into the prime slot by winning Film & TV with a nine. Seconds with eights were I Look Like The Next Door Neighbour In The Royle Family and Wot – No Jimmy Saville a point ahead of third placed Justin Slipped Me The Tongue and crucially the leaders nearest contenders Idiots Not Making Fun Of The News.
The bar gave up a round of applause for our winners on the night Wot – No Jimmy Saville as Gemma fanned out the three envelopes for our winning Team to choose from. The designated Team Member went to his right and gave the envelope back to Gemma to open… and to everyone’s disappointment it was the £109 Cash Prize!
Wot – No Jimmy Saville still got a deserved big hand and quick as a flash they divvied the winnings up and returned £29 to the pot for Quiz 128, what a benevolent bunch.
Next up it was the Wild Card Question. To enter is just £1 per person and for that you once more got a little coloured Post-It, this week again a nice dayglo pink (Post-It's again sponsored by Infinite Design), on which to write the answer to a single question that John reads out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling. Gemma had done the honours getting the £1 entries in and we had £22 in for the prize. This weeks sports based Wild Card was:
In the Sports Round we asked which team won the 1988-89 Football League Championship by goal difference with a goal scored in additional time in their final match of the season against fellow contenders Liverpool at Anfield?
The answer was Arsenal and the goal was scored by Michael Thomas.
The Wild Card Question this week is how many minutes and seconds of the match had been played when Michael Thomas scored the winning goal?
Crucially Quiz Master John neglected to mention the bit about extra time (what a rotter!).
After a minute or so when all of the Post-It’s were stuck neatly to his table and he’d checked and double checked there were no stragglers John then decided to mention the goal was scored in additional time… the bar collectively groaned, John dispensed with the sub 90 minute answers and that left just four Post-It’s! So it was between Matt, Spike, Gary Carr and Guy, all of whom remembered that League decider was won in what would in later years be termed ‘Fergie time’.
Spike was a couple of minutes out, Guy and Matt were less than a minute out but our winner tonight, just 20 seconds from the correct answer was regular Quizzer, Gary Carr from the Idiots Team. Gary got a round of applause as he approached the bar where Gemma had a nice crisp £20 note and a couple of coins for him, not a bad return for a Quid stake.
With that final act Quiz 127 was complete and John signed off with his usual Goodnight and God Bless. A big thanks to everyone for turning out, let’s hope our new Teams enjoyed the night and return along with our regulars for Quiz 128 where, thanks to Wot – No Jimmy Saville, we start with £29 in the pot.
