We had another great turnout for Quiz 128… eight Teams and 33 Quizzers took the total Cash Prize up to £63, not a bad wad for a Monday night out (if you could win it of course).
We were missing a couple of our regular teams, She & Him and the Idiots were conspicuous by their absence but having been great supporters of the quiz since the beginning we can let them off. Hopefully they should be back for Quiz 129.
Quiz Master John was having some deserved time off and our replacement MC Chris (from the Idiots team) couldn’t make it so yours truly stepped in at the last minute (thoroughly enjoyed it but it is hard work mind!)
Barman Chris did the honours and handed the Pic Quiz and the Answer Sheets out. The Pics this week were Classic Motorbike Brands but very close up and cropped. The clue for the Quiz Preview on the website was "The intricate detail was a Triumph for Vincent the Indian”. A couple of our Teams, avid readers of the Preview, had it nailed.
After giving the Teams a few minutes to muse over the motorbike monikers we kicked off with our usual ten Questions on General Knowledge not long after nine. Starting easy then we wound it up a bit:
Q2 What type of creatures are diamondbacks, krait and fer de lance?
Q9 In computer terminology what did the XP stand for in the Microsoft Operating System Windows XP?
After giving the Teams a couple of minutes to peruse their answers they handed in both their Pics and Answer Sheets for marking up and after our first rounds the leader board like this.
Born To Be Wild mashed the motorbike brands with a full throttle 12 from 12, Still No Googz came in a close second on 11 and An Englishman An Irishman But No Scotsman along with BML scored creditable nines.
The General Knowledge scores this week were a bit low but Born To Be Wild were on a mission and managed an impressive eight whilst everyone else were getting fives and fours. We thought the questions were reasonably well pitched.
The leader board was already looking stretched, Born To Be Wild were well in the lead on 20 with their nearest challengers Still No Googz on 16 (they are definitely missing Googz).
For Quiz 127 we had music questions ranging from celebrity babies to bootylicious babes along with regular questions like these…
Q17 Why did Miley Cyrus 2013 music video for Wrecking Ball cause so much media attention?
Q18 An american 60s icon, a former Beatle, the sole constant member of ELO, Big O and the Heartbreakers frontman formed which successful supergroup in the late 80s?
Once more coming in at number one we had Born To Be Wild with a nine. Second in the round with eight, An Englishman An Irishman But No Scotsman on eight and trailing in third spot Still No Googz on seven.
Following the Music scores our leader board was already looking a foregone conclusion, Born To Be Wild were 29, six ahead of Still No Googz on 23 and nearly a whole round of points ahead of third placed An Englishman An Irishman But No Scotsman on 20.
We then had our usual half-time five minute break for Teams to enjoy the delicious free savouries, get the drinks in at the bar and/or have a smoke (but not necessarily in that order). Then it was into the Round that sorts the men from the boys… Sport.
Q26 In what sport did Len Ganley become a famous referee?
Q27 Which Swedish winger joined Arsenal from Cremonese in 1990 for £1 million?
Who do you think were the top performers in Sport this week? Yes, no upsets here, Born To Be Wild crossed the finish line with an excellent eight. A good innings by An Englishman An Irishman But No Scotsman gave them a seven for second and then in third we had Wor Quizlamic Extreme and Still No Googz on sixes.
Going into the final round Film & TV, barring a meltdown of astronomic proportions Born To Be Wild had the Quiz in the bag with 37 points. They would need to score less than four and second placed Still No Googz would need maximum points to even force a Dart Off! The fight for the wooden spoon however was well entertaining. Honey Boy Zimba, Roger The Cabin Boy and Wor Quizlamic Extreme had been very vocal all night in the battle to avoid being last and going into the final round there was just three points separating them. Which team would fare the best out of questions like these?
Q31 What sort of shoes did Jimmy Nail wear in his 1994 BBC TV series?
Q38 The 2002 horror film The Ring is an American remake of a 1998 movie called Ring originally made in which country?
After marking, due to the competition to avoid the wooden spoon we went in reverse order for the round… Roger The Cabin Boy crashed and burned with just a two to see them prop up the leader board with a final score of 21. Wor Quizlamic Extreme did slightly better with a five to come second last with 23 but the big news for the final round was Honey Boy Zimba who scored an excellent seven (causing much excitement in The Colly on a Monday night) to take them to sixth place. Well done guys, you have bragging rights over your rivals this week!
It was no surprise that Born To Be Wild won Quiz 128, winning the final round with a score of nine and on the night they provided a masterclass in Quizzing. The right blend of age and specialism has this team at the peak of their powers and our assembled Quiz Teams gave them the round of applause they deserved for winning Quiz 128 with a final score of 46 – a massive 11 points ahead of their closest competitors Still No Googz on 35.
One thing the winning team cannot know however is which envelope the cash is in… Team Member Phil ‘The Power’ Mac had the honours, he went left of the three offered up by Chris, unfolded the piece of paper enclosed and announced Food Vouchers! Unlucky Phil and our winning Team Born To Be Wild but that’s great news for Quiz 129 as it means there is £63 rolling over. A good turnout could see that Cash Prize escalate to nearly £100.
Next up it was the Wild Card Question. To enter is just £1 per person and for that you once more got a little coloured Post-It, this week again a nice dayglo pink (Post-It's again sponsored by Infinite Design), on which to write the answer to a single question. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling. Chris had been round rattling his jar getting the £1 entries in and we had a total of £16 in for the prize. Quiz 128’s Wild Card was:
In the Film & TV Round we had the question “Which 1962 movie opened with Peter O’Toole dying in a motorcycle accident and then saw him riding a camel?”. The answer was of course the epic movie Lawrence of Arabia.
The Wild Card Question tonight is fairly straightforward... in hours and minutes what is the running time of the UK Directors Cut of Lawrence of Arabia?
After repeating the question the Post-It’s started to accumulate on the Quiz Masters desk and following a bit of cajoling we had the 16 entries in.
First off was everyone over four hours and there were a few. Second lot to be discounted, everyone under 3:30 to more groans. This left just three, Robin was close with 3:42, Katie was even closer with 3:43 but our winner tonight was Jay who was just two minutes out with 3:46. Jay was well chuffed to win what could be his third (or maybe fourth) Wild Card and gladly accepted the £16 in readies from Gemma behind the bar.
With that Quiz 128 was done and the excitement was over. A big thank you to everyone for turning out and we hope you all return for Quiz 129 where we could be looking at a near £100 Cash Prize.
Oh, the Title of this weeks Report? I dropped a few bollocks as usual, mixing up the answers to the Wild Card was one (thanks for pointing that out Sarah, could have been well embarrassing). I also got a bit tongue tied with Lawrence of Arabia (oooops!) I wasn't aware of that. Thanks to Richard Carter for pointing it out in his tweet (I blame the mic).
