It was another cracking night for Quiz 131. We may not have had the Sky 1 TV cameras this week but we had ten teams and 34 Quizzers eager to play for what had escalated into a £76 Cash Prize due to the excellent turnout.

Quiz Master John had made it in, even though he was still suffering with dreaded man flu (trooper), and opened up tonight's proceedings by welcoming everyone to the Quiz a little after nine.

The clue for the Picture Round on this weeks Quiz Preview was "Don't be negative about those Premiership sponsors" and with the Premiership kicking off this weekend it could only mean footy teams sponsors in negative couldn’t it?

This weeks clue on the Preview was "Don't be negative about those Premiership sponsors"

John gave our teams a few minutes to peruse the Premiership logos before kicking off with our first ten questions on General Knowledge. As usual, we started easy but then…

Q5 Frenchman Louis Bleriot became the first man to do what in 1909?
Q8 Who was the famous Queen of the Iceni people?

Following the General Knowledge Round Quiz Master John gave our Teams a few minutes before calling in the Pics Round and Answer Sheet for marking. We had two teams this week that neglected to read the Picture Round intro and put the names of the sponsors and not the name of the team! John, very fair as usual called them back and gave them the chance to correct their entries.

Two teams got full marks in the Pics, the brilliantly named Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked and the interestingly monickered Jumanjo (is this a play on the Robin Williams film Jumanji?). The Plain Old Idiots came in seconds with a nine and She & Him and Hands Off Cliff! (oh dear, backing the wrong horse there?) rock n rolled in third with eights.

Most Teams did well in what was a fairly ‘challenging’ General Knowledge. Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked led the field with a ten, closely followed by Roxy’s Midnight Runner on a nine. Then we had four teams tied for third with She & Him, Nirvana, Your Such A Pikey and Jumanjo all scoring eight.

That gave us an early leader board showing Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked ominously taking an early lead with 22. Jumanjo were up there in second with 20 and then we had She & Him along with The Plain Old Idiots on 16s a piece.

Next up we had our Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from twerking to ying tong tiddle I po…

Q13 Who was criticised for ‘twerking’ at the VMA awards in August 2013?
Q19 The Ying Tong Song was a hit record in the 50s and also the 70s... who sang it?

Three Teams tied at top spot this week, Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked, She & Him and The Plain Old Idiots all managed an 11. Roxy’s Midnight Runner along with Your Such A Pikey came in second with 10s and in third we had Team Awesome (and Jamie) and Jumanjo scoring nines.

Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked were forging a pretty impressive lead going into the break for snacks. Half way through the Quiz and they were already on 33, four points ahead of second placed Jumanjo on 29. She & Him and The Plain Old Idiots were doing well in third with 27s each but already at this stage six points adrift was a big margin to make up. Time for snacks, drinks and a recess!

After the five minute break for delicious free savouries, this week made up of onion rings, salt and vinegar peanuts along with some shell shaped spicy snacks snacks, it was back to the Quiz and the round that generally sorts the contenders from the pretenders… Sport. Here’s a couple of the questions:

Q25 What was the nickname of the 70s Liverpool and England captain Emlyn Hughes?
Q28 Which former Saracens lock played for New Zealand in the 2007 Rugby World Cup?

This week everyone struggled with the Sport Round… we do like an evenly matched Quiz! Five teams; Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked, She & Him, The Plain Old Idiots, Nirvana and Hands Off Cliff! all managed sixes and trailing in second we had Your Such A Pikey along with Jumanjo on fours.

The Sports Round hadn’t made that much of a difference to the leader board going into the final round. Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked were still in a commanding lead on 39 and then six behind were three teams vying for second place; She & Him, The Plain Old Idiots and Jumanjo all on 33. It was going to take a meltdown of epic proportions in the Film & TV Round for Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked to throw this lead away! Here’s a couple of samples:

Q33 Which two ex-Pythons wrote the 70s TV Series Ripping Yarns?
Q38 The character Lestat de Lioncourt appears in which 1994 movie?

As if to verify their superiority this week Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked came in top of the pile with an 11, Jumanjo had an excellent round coming in second with a ten and then we had three teams on sevens; She & Him, Nirvana and Too White For Black Time.

So there was no surprise, the winner of Quiz 131 with an outstanding 50 points was our regulars Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked seven points clear of our second placed team on the night Jumanjo.

Congratulations Bachelor Boy Your Nicked got a well deserved round of applause as Gemma gave Team Member Will three envelopes to choose from. Will went for the right envelope, slowly unfurled the slip of paper enclosed and to everyone's joy announced Food Vouchers! Unlucky Will (the foods lush though) but that's great news for Quiz 132 as it means with a decent turnout we could be looking at a £120+ Cash prize.

Next up it was the Wild Card Question. To enter is just £1 per person and for that you got a little coloured Post-It, this week a nice dayglo pink again (Post-It's again sponsored by Infinite Design), on which to write the answer to a single question that John reads out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling. Barman Chris had done the rounds getting the £1 entries in and this week we had a huge £30 in for the prize. The question was:

In the Film & TV Round we asked a question about the tremendously successful TV Series Breaking Bad which ran from 2008 until 2013.

It was a mammoth Series with a total of five Seasons of between 7 and 16 episodes per Season. Each of the episodes were 45 minutes long apart from the final two which were 55 minutes long.

The Wild Card Question tonight is, if you sat down in front of the TV and watched every single episode back to back, how many hours and minutes would it take you to finish the complete Series?

After the usual repeats John hurried our entrants to put their Post-It on his table.

After checking that everyone was in he immediately binned all guesses over 50 hours, then he discounted all entries under 40 hours which left a few. John then announced that one person was just 15 minutes out, Andy G but he was second… there were a few gasps from the audience. Then there was disbelief as he announced Sarah S had the answer absolutely spot on! Yes, Sarah, a bit of a Breaking Bad fan, knew how many episodes there were, did a bit of mental arithmetic, added on the extra 20 minutes for the last two episodes and got it exactly. Well done Sarah, we can’t argue with that kind of ruthless mathematical ability and after gratefully accepting the £30 Cash Prize from Chris she immediately went to the bar and got the round in. Now that’s what a Cash Prize is for.

With that Quiz 131 was complete and John, still flagging due to his man flu, signed off to a round of applause with his usual Goodnight and God Bless.

Thanks to everyone who turned out, let’s hope we get another big crowd for Quiz 132 where we could be playing for a Cash Prize of £110 or more.

Best answer of the night and inspiration for the Blog Title. In the Film and TV Round we asked what was the only X Rated movie to win an Oscar? In amongst some of the more obscene scrawlings which we couldn’t possibly publish was this inspired answer… Honey I $@#$%&€  the Kids starring Cliff Richard. What a gem.
