We had eight Teams in for Quiz 129, the 26 Quizzers involved didn’t take us to the near £100 we were hoping for but the Cash Prize was still a well tasty £89.
We welcomed a couple of new Teams (we’re always pleased to see new faces) but the Quizzers who have joined us for the last couple of weeks, Honey Boy Zimba and their pals were sadly missing… I hope my stint in the chair last week hasn’t put them off!
Quiz Master John, back in command following his week off was in fine fettle as he introduced the Quiz a little after nine whilst Barman Chris handed out the Picture Round and Answer Sheets. Those who are clued up and read the Preview should have sussed the theme this week from the following clue "From The Love Bug to Knight Rider they were integral to the plot" it had to be famous cars in TV and Film couldn’t it?
John gave our teams a few minutes to mull over the motors and then kicked off with our first ten questions on General Knowledge. It was the usual script, they started reasonably easy but then…
Q3 Which big cat is also known as the panther?
Q9 What would you be doing if you were practising the Japanese art of Ikebana?
Our Teams handed both their Pics and Answer Sheets in for marking after the General Knowledge and following John’s lightning quick marking the Teams scored like this.
In the Picture Round Swansonite and The Anthill Mob both made short work of the famous cars both getting a top score of 12. Idiots – Chris Is Doing The Quiz Tonight and Matt The Spy came in close seconds with 11s a piece and The Peoples Front Of Judea managed a ten.
The General Knowledge scores this week were pretty good across the board. Swansonite and The Peoples Front Of Judea won the round with excellent tens. The Anthill Mob were in second spot with nine and She & Him and Quiz Akubusi managed an eight each.
That gave us a leader board at this early stage of Swansonite in the lead on 22, The Anthill Mob second on 21, The Peoples Front Of Judea in third with 20 and Idiots – Chris Is Doing The Quiz Tonight a bit off the pace with 18.
For Quiz 129 we had music questions ranging from 60s bohemian musicals to the soundtrack of the Spongebob Squarepants movie along with more straightforward questions like these…
Q12 What are the first names of Simon & Garfunkel?
Q14 Who shaved all her hair off for 2013’s Comic Relief?
Topping this weeks Charts in the Music Round with a decent return of nine points from a possible 12 we had Swansonite and Idiots – Chris Is Doing The Quiz Tonight. In second spot with eights were Malaga Marvels tied with The Anthill Mob and in third She & Him and Matt The Spy managed sevens.
The Music Round scores gave the leader board a different complexion. Swansonite eased into the lead with a total score of 31, The Anthill Mob remained in second with 29, Idiots – Chris Is Doing The Quiz Tonight moved into third on 27 The Peoples Front Of Judea slipped to fourth with 27.
After a five minute break to sample the delicious free savouries this week consisting of mini poppodoms, salt and vinegar twirls and mini cheese snacks, it was back to the round that can make or break our Teams… Sport. Here’s a couple of the easier questions:
Q25 What 2002 film starring Parminder Nagra features the ladies football team The Hounslow Harriers?
Q30 Which sport was made popular by Major Ernst Killander following WW1?
Most teams did okay in Sport this week, Commonwealth Gold went to The Anthill Mob with an excellent ten from a possible twelve. Silver went to Idiots – Chris Is Doing The Quiz Tonight and Quiz Akubusi with nines but crucially Swansonite dropped points coming in third on eight along with The Peoples Front Of Judea and Malaga Marvels.
Going into the final round Film & TV we had both Swansonite and The Anthill Mob in pole on 39 with Idiots – Chris Is Doing The Quiz Tonight on 36 and The Peoples Front Of Judea on 34. It looked a straight fight between the joint leaders
Q32 The actor Sir Michael Hordern was the voice of which popular TV bear?
Q40 What is the name of the 1990 to 1998 Political satire starring Neil Pearson and Susannah Doyle amongst others?
The Anthill Mob swept the board on Film & TV getting a near perfect 11 points, The Peoples Front Of Judea came in runners up for the round with an eight. Unfortunately our joint leaders coming into the final showdown, Swansonite, just managed a six. That meant The Anthill Mob won the Quiz yet again due to their superior knowledge in the final two rounds.
The bar gave up a round of applause for our winners as Chris fanned out the three envelopes for our winning Team to choose from. The designated Team Member, this week Will, went to his left slowly opened the envelope and announced… to everyone’s disappointment it was the £89 Cash Prize!
The Anthill Mob, Richard, Sarah, Phil “The Power” Mac and Will still got a deserved big hand for winning yet again… our challengers just don’t seem to be able to go the distance against these guys. They divide up the cash between them and generously put £9 back in the pot for Quiz 130.
Next up it was the Wild Card Question. To enter is just £1 per person and for that you once more got a little coloured Post-It, this week again a nice dayglo pink (Post-It's again sponsored by Infinite Design), on which to write the answer to a single question that John reads out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling. Chris had done the rounds getting the £1 entries in and we had £24 in for the prize. This weeks music based Wild Card was:
In the Music Round we asked which band released The Fat of the Land album in 1997? Most of you knew it was that nice bunch of fellas The Prodigy.
The Fat of the Land album was extremely successful, selling 317,000 copies in its first week it was entered into the Guinness World Records as the fastest selling UK Dance album.
In the same year as it’s release Q Magazine compiled their definitive list of the 100 Best Albums Of All Time... the Wild Card Question tonight is at what position did Q Magazine rank The Fat of The Land in their Top 100?
After a minute or so there were quite a few Post-It’s stuck neatly to John’s table and after calling in any stragglers he surprised everyone by saying that anyone over forty was out! Then even more shockingly anyone over 30 was out… which left just four Post-It’s. Jay was there at 23, he came fourth, Jay was there again with 17 so he was also third, Robin went a bit too high with a third and came second but our winner on the night was Matt who was just three off the mark with six. A happy Matt collected his £24 from the bar with a grin to a round of applause from everyone involved,
With that final bit of excitement Quiz 129 was complete and John signed off with his usual Goodnight and God Bless. A big thanks to everyone for turning out, let’s hope our new Teams enjoyed the night and return along with our regulars for Quiz 130 where, thanks to The Anthill Mob, we start with £9 in the pot.
