A Muppets Picture Round, a porn Wild Card question and something about Patrick Fitzwilliam and William Fitzpatrick... just another Quiz Night at The Colly!

After last weeks excellent turnout of 30 Quizzers in nine teams we were hoping for more of the same this week to take the potential Cash Prize money over the £90 mark. It was a cold but dry night in January so we had the fires blazing to ensure The Colly was warm and snug as we waited eagerly for our teams to turn in.

It was looking good with 15 minutes to go, the bar was quite full and there were number of new faces (which was very encouraging) and by nine we had 31 Quizzers in ten Teams ready to go.

The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights..." and if you’d punched that into Google you would have got the Muppets theme tune. So those astute Quizzers who read the Preview every week would have sussed tonight’s Picture Round was about the Muppet characters.

The clue in this weeks Preview was "It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights..." so it could only be The Muppets!

Quiz Master John was otherwise engaged so it was myself, Quiz Compiler Graham, again in the hot seat (although with the massive radiator not being on behind me it wasn’t quite as hot a seat as my previous stint!).

After giving the teams a few minutes to mull over the Muppets we kicked off the Quiz on the stroke of nine with our first ten questions on General Knowledge.

As usual, a couple of easy questions first, then as the round wore on they gradually got a little more demanding:

Q7 Who was the first Twitter user to reach 10 million, then 20 million then 30 million followers? And to get a bonus point guess the year that the 20 million record was reached?
Q10 Which best selling English author wrote The Rats, The Fog and Fluke?

After the General Knowledge Round we gave the Teams a few minutes to peruse their answers before calling in the Pics Round and Answer Sheet for marking.

Most teams did very well in the Muppet Picture Round. Jay James were rocking with a 12 out of 12 to win the round. Googz Big Brother and the creatively named Robin’s Albanian Porn Star Cleaners came in second on 11 and The Peoples Front Of Judea tied with The Hasty Puddings in third on tens.

In General Knowledge the majority of teams did pretty well too. Robin’s Albanian Porn Star Cleaners made short work of the round with an 11 from the 12 on offer (team member Richard also had a very interesting joke relating to the Question about what Fitz means in a surname). The Idiots managed a nine to come in second and then we had The Academy and Blazin’ Squad on eights a piece with everyone else getting sevens and sixes.

The combined scores from the Pics and the General Knowledge Round gave us a leader board at this early stage of Robin’s Albanian Porn Star Cleaners in top spot with 22, Jay James following in second with 19 and Googz Big Brother on 18. The rest of our teams had between 17s and 12s.

Next up, the Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from songs about hips to hip jeans:

Q13 In 2006 who had a hit with the single Hips Don’t Lie?
Q15 By virtue of being the soundtrack to a Levi’s Ad, the song Spaceman became the best selling single of UK charts in 1996 but who were the band?

Tied at number one this week in Music we had three teams on nine, The Peoples Front Of Judea, Googz Big Brother and the intriguingly named DJ Bob Hoskins Going Mental In A Dustbin. In close second were Robin’s Albanian Porn Star Cleaners and Blazin’ Squad with eights. Scoring sevens to gain third spot were The Idiots and The Hasty Puddings with the rest of the teams getting between six and four.

This gave the leader board a familiar look going into the snack break. Still on top we had Robin’s Albanian Porn Star Cleaners on 30, three points behind on 27 we had Googz Big Brother then on 26 The Peoples Front Of Judea. Our other teams were on between 24 and 17.

Next up was our usual five minute break for topping up drinks and sampling the delicious free savouries. Then it was back to the Quiz and the round that can sort the winners from the losers, Sport. Here’s a couple of examples:

Q26 After just two minutes of the Rugby Super League Grand Final against St Helens in 2014 which blossoming Welsh International Wigan Warriors prop forward was sent off for throwing a punch?
Q29 Micheala Tabb became the first female to referee which sports World Championship Final in 2009?

Champs in Sport this week we had Robin’s Albanian Porn Star Cleaners with an excellent 12 from the possible 13. Three teams tied for second spot in the round with The Peoples Front Of Judea, The Academy and The Idiots all getting a reputable 11 and in third Googz Big Brother on nine.

The Sport scores gave us a leaders board going into the final Film & TV Round with Robin’s Albanian Porn Star Cleaners on what looked like an unassailable lead of 42, five ahead of their nearest challengers The Peoples Front Of Judea on 37. We then had Googz Big Brother on 36 and The Idiots on 35. It seemed Robin’s Albanian Porn Star Cleaners were in the driving seat but you never know, we’ve seen them have a horror show in the last round before especially with questions along the lines of these:

Q35 When these cops hit the streets, even the bad guys die laughing! is the tagline to which 1984 movie? And for a bonus point the actress who played Cadet Karen Thompson went on to find stardom in what major TV Series?
Q37 In Star Wars, an AT-AT also known as an Imperial Walker, is one of the most heavily armoured land vehicles in the Galactic Empires Army. What does the acronym AT-AT stand for?

Tops in the final round were Googz Big Brother and DJ Bob Hoskins Going Mental In A Dustbin tied on nines a piece. Second on eights we had The Peoples Front Of Judea, The Idiots and yes, you’ve guessed it Robin’s Albanian Porn Star Cleaners taking there final nights score to 50 and making them winners of Quiz 151.

Our generous Quiz Teams gave the nights Champions a deserved round of applause as team member Sarah chose an envelope from the three on offer from Barman Chris. The crowd were willing her to pull out Beers or Food Vouchers but Sarah disappointed them all by drawing the slip saying Cash Prize from her chosen envelope. Our teams gave a begrudging round of applause but that’s the luck of the draw. Robin’s Albanian Porn Star Cleaners generously put £13 back in the pot though so with another decent turnout next week we could be playing for nearly fifty Quid.

Up next was the usual Wild Card Question to finish the night.

To enter is just £1 per person and for that you got a little coloured Post-It, this week a nice dayglo pink (Post-It's once more sponsored by Infinite…), on which to write the answer to a single question that we read out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling. Gemma quickly did the rounds getting the £1 entries in and for Quiz 151 we had £22 in for the prize. The question was:

In the Film & TV Round we asked the question: In the States around 95% of all of the movies released are of what genre? The answer was Pornography.

When verifying this question I came across some quite interesting porn statistics such as:
– Every 39 minutes there is a new porno video created in the States and
– In one year over 13 Billion dollars was spent on porn in the USA alone which is more than the combined annual revenues of ABC, CBS and NBC.

So bearing that in mind… tonight’s Wild Card Question is how much in US Dollars is being spent every second of every day across the world on pornography?

After verifying that everyone was in, there were groans as all those over $10,000, which was the vast majority, were discounted. Then all those under $1,000 were consigned to the also-rans heap. This left just two entries, Scoop with $5,000 and David W with $1,327. Scoop was disappointed, he came second, our Wild Card Winner this week with the closer answer was David W from The Peoples Front Of Judea Team. So David was well chuffed as he collected his £22 from the bar, his team of two may have come second (again!) but at least he walked out with a Cash Prize. Well done Peter.

With that Quiz 151 was wrapped up, a big thanks to all who turned out, as always it was a highly entertaining evening. We hope to see you all next week for Quiz 152 where Quiz Master John should be back in the hot seat.
