Lackadaisical marking, undecipherable writing and yet another Dart Off meant we ran a little later than usual but everyone still had an entertaining night at Quiz 175.
We were hoping the draw of a possible £80 plus Cash Prize would get our teams excited enough to make it a good turnout on the night and we were encouraged to see that despite some spots of rain early evening there was a good crowd in the bar by around 8:30pm.
It was touch and go if regular Quiz Master John would make it, he was returning from a lads week away in the sun and landing mid-afternoon in Manchester, so even if he did manage to get here in time he may not have the energy to host the Quiz! Ten minutes before the Quiz was due to start he hadn’t made it so it was yours truly again, Graham the Quiz Writer, who stepped in to host Quiz 175.
Gemma did the rounds collecting the £1 entry fee per person and after counting it we found there were 29 people in tonights Quiz taking the Cash Prize to £71. Then three more entrants arrived so it rose to 32 people in nine teams and a decent £74 to play for. Game On!
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "Remember Blair, BritPop and Bobbit?" therefore it had to be that dullest of decades, the 1990s.
After giving our teams five minutes to contemplate the 90s Picture Round the Quiz kicked off with our first ten questions on General Knowledge. As usual, a couple of easy questions first… then just as we were about to ask Question three another Team turned up! No problem, that’s another three in the Quiz taking us to 35 and now ten teams. We gave the new Team a couple of minutes to settle in, asked the first two questions again and then carried on.
Q2 Which German city is the capital of the Free State of Bavaria?
Q7 Which famous inventor was nicknamed The Wizard of Menlo Park?
After the General Knowledge we allowed the Teams a few minutes to think about their answers before calling in both the Pics Round and Answer Sheet for marking. Even with Barmaid Gemma's help doing the Pic Round it took some time to mark the sheets up this week, there was some undecipherable longhand and writing one of the Quiz team names took twenty minutes!
Most teams did pretty well in the Pics Round but Rascal Ferrets On Vibes absolutely nailed it with a 100% 12 from 12. The Peoples Front Of Judea, Will Got A First* and the team with the longest name ever in the history of our Quiz; This Wednesday, Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel… And I Am A Massive Ticket Selling Whore! came second with 11’s each. In third we had Karless and the topically named Venus Williams – New Balls Please with tens a piece.
*Will is a member of this regular Quiz Team and as their name suggest he’s went and got himself a 1st Class Honours Degree (let us know in what subject guys), so well done Will, congratulations!
The General Knowledge Round as usual proved a little more challenging than the Pics. Rascal Ferrets On Vibes took the round with an excellent nine from a possible 11. The Peoples Front Of Judea and Will Got A First managed eights each and This Wednesday, Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel… And I Am A Massive Ticket Selling Whore! rolled in third with a seven. The rest of the teams got fives through to three.
The combined scores gave us a leader board at this early stage of Rascal Ferrets On Vibes leading the pack on 21. The Peoples Front Of Judea and Will Got A First were in close second on 19 with This Wednesday, Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel… And I Am A Massive Ticket Selling Whore! third on 18.
Next up, the Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from cockney geezers singing about cockney icons to foxy Jessie going glabrous:
Q12 In 1984 Madness reached number 11 in the UK Charts with a song about which famous film star?
Q15 What stunt did Jessie J undertake to raise money for Comic Relief in 2013?
Chart toppers this week we had Will Got A First with a well impressive ten. Three teams, Rascal Ferrets On Vibes, This Wednesday, Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel… And I Am A Massive Ticket Selling Whore! and Iago & Othello returned eights each and The Peoples Front Of Judea scored seven.
This gave the leader board a slightly different complexion going into the snack break. Will Got A First were now on par with Rascal Ferrets On Vibes at 29 each. This Wednesday, Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel… And I Am A Massive Ticket Selling Whore! and The Peoples Front Of Judea were tied in second with 26 and in third on 21s were Karless and Venus Williams – New Balls Please.
We then had our usual five minute break for topping up drinks and sampling the delicious free savouries. Then it was back to the Quiz and the round that can put a spoke in your wheels, Sport. Here’s a couple of examples:
Q26 What rare statistic do goalkeepers Peter Schmeichel, Brad Friedel, Paul Robinson, Tim Howard and Asmir Begovic all have in common?
Q30 Who became Britain’s golden girl in the Athens 2004 Olympics by winning both the 800 and 1500 metres?
Crossing the line first this week in Sport we had Will Got A First with ten points. Rascal Ferrets On Vibes were runners up with nine and Karless came in third on eight.
The Sport scores gave us two teams in the lead going into the final Film & TV Round, Will Got A First were Oscar favourites with 39 but Rascal Ferrets On Vibes were a very close second on 38. The Peoples Front Of Judea were five points adrift in third with 33 so it would take a spectacular double fail by both teams in the lead to let third place back into it. With questions along the lines of these though, who could call it:
Q35 What was the 1997 sequel to the classic 1993 movie Jurassic Park?
Q36 In Sex and the City which character was played by Chris Noth?
This Wednesday, Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel… And I Am A Massive Ticket Selling Whore! won the Film & TV Round with an incredible 100% 13 points… but they were a bit behind the leaders to catch up, even with a final score of 45.
Rascal Ferrets On Vibes came second in the round with a very good 12 points to take them to 50 points and in third The Peoples Front Of Judea on 11 along with Will Got A First. That meant Will Got A First also got 50 so for the second week in a row it was a Dart Off!
It was getting near closing so we quickly got our representatives from each Team. For Rascal Ferrets On Vibes it was Colly Barman Jay and for Will Got A First Quiz regular Sarah.
After a toss up Sarah elected to step up to the oche first. Sarah’s been known to play a bit of darts but her accuracy deserted her on the night, she scored a disappointing seven with three darts.
Jay was rubbing his hands, he plays a bit as well and his first set netted him 35. So it was down to Sarah on her second and final three darts… she did well this time and scored 41 to take her final total to 48.
Jay stepped up for his final set, 14 from his three darts would win the Dart Off, he concentrated for a moment then threw a 17… game over with two darts to spare! Commiserations to Sarah but well done Jay.
That meant our winners tonight were Rascal Ferrets On Vibes and after his mastery in the Dart Off it had to be Jay to choose from the three envelopes that Barmaid Gemma was holding. Would he get Food Vouchers, Beers or Cash? Jay chose middle, slowly opened the envelope, unfolded the slip of paper and announced… BEERS!
Unlucky you didn’t get the cash guys but you can drown your sorrows with the case of Budweiser and come back next week to try for what should be £110 plus Cash Prize.
Up next was the usual Wild Card Question to finish the night.
To enter is just £1 per person and for that you got a little coloured Post-It, this week a nice dayglo yellow (Post-It's once more sponsored by Infinite…), on which to write the answer to a single question that we read out. The answer is a number or a date and closest to it wins all the money that's been collected in. It's usually a very obscure question so it's more of an inspired guess than something you would actually know, and, as with all of the questions in The Colly Quiz, there is absolutely no Googling. Barmaid Gemma quickly did the rounds getting the £1 entries in and for Quiz 175 we had an excellent £33 in for the prize. The question was:
In the Sport Round we had a Question about the Green Jacket awarded to the winners of the Masters Golf Tournament in the USA.
In 2013 relatives of Horton Smith, who won two of the earliest Masters Tournaments, found his green jacket in a closet so they put it up for auction. The jacket went on to fetch a record price for a piece of golf memorabilia.
The Wild Card Question tonight is what was the price paid for Horton’s green jacket in US Dollars?
It was now after time so we quickly verified that everyone was in and then immediately discarded those over $1 million leaving about half the entries. Then there were groans from the crowd as all those under $600,000 were dumped as well (including a bizarre guess of 50 Cents?).
This left just three entrants Quiz Winner Jay, who had guessed $900,000, Richard N with $875,000 and Scouse with $652,300 and it was Scouse who was the closest out of those three, he was just $30,000 out! A happy Scouse collected his £33 from Barmaid Gemma and then made for the door, we had to pull him back in for a picture with his winnings.
With that Quiz 175 was complete, it had been another well entertaining night and let’s hope you all come back next week to play for the £110 plus Cash Prize.
