A perplexing Picture Quiz, more dodgy team names and a last minute Dart Off! Quiz 209 was well busy.
The last time we had a leap year Quiz was way back in 2012 and the winners that night were an outfit called Congratulations Whitney Two Weeks Sober who pipped a team called The J's by a single point to win the Beers at Quiz Night 14.
There were seven teams that night and we were hoping for a similar turnout for Quiz 209 four years later! There was a small rollover of £12 so good turnout of 40 or so could take the Cash Prize up to a half decent £50 ish. We waited patiently as the clock moved towards nine.
As the kick off approached more people just kept streaming in until by ten after nine we still hadn't even got started! The place was rammed and by the time we eventually got under way there were 12 Teams and 50 Quizzers crammed into the bar taking the Cash Prize for the night to a well nice £62.
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "No clue this week, just make sure you have been reading the news!". So if any research was required by our teams it was just to be abreast of what had been going on in the world over the previous four weeks or so.
The teams were given a few minutes to look through the Picture Round whilst everyone got the beers in and settled down then the Quiz kicked off very late with our usual first ten questions on General Knowledge. A couple of easy ones first, then as the round wore on they gradually got a little more testing:
Q04 Which species of odd-toed ungulates can be Black, White, Indian or Sumatran?
Q07 In 1911 which (South American) lost city was discovered by the archaeologist Hiram Bingham?
After the General Knowledge the Teams were given a few additional minutes to consider their answers before the Pics Round and Answer Sheet were called in for marking.
Following a bit of a recount (you had to be there!) most teams did okay in the Pics Round. Fairy Dogmother were well knowledgeable on the News with 23 from a possible 24. The subtly named Michael Gove Is A Twat came in second on 21 whilst Aroné Koné and 46 Hours And Six Minutes To The Comedy Event Of The Month… It’s Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel, Wednesday 3rd March weren't far behind in third on 20.
The General Knowledge Round proved to be a mixed bag. Nerd Herd were definitely the Nerds this week with an outstanding top score of 14. Black n’ Whites scraped second with a pretty good 11 whilst 46 Hours And Six Minutes To The Comedy Event Of The Month… It’s Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel, Wednesday 3rd March and "I’ll Be The First 18 Stone Man To Ride A Derby Winner" Says X’s New Cellmate! managed third with tens each.
The combined scores gave us a leader board at this early stage of Fairy Dogmother leading the pack with 31. 46 Hours And Six Minutes To The Comedy Event Of The Month… It’s Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel, Wednesday 3rd March were a close second with 30 whilst Black n’ Whites and Michael Gove Is A Twat were rolling in third on 29s a piece.
Next up, the Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from Empire State of Mind to Empire Magazine:
Q15 Which town in Wales did Welsh pair Alex Warren and Terema Wainwright sing about in a spoof version of the song Empire State of Mind which went viral on YouTube in 2010?
Q16 Described by Empire Magazine as “This really is a load of old cobblers...” which pop group starred in a feature film about themselves called Seeing Double in 2003?
Straight in at number one in Music this week were 46 Hours And Six Minutes To The Comedy Event Of The Month… It’s Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel, Wednesday 3rd March with a 100% score of 12. Black n’ Whites and Rascal Ferrets On Vibes were good value for second with a well good 11 whilst Fairy Dogmother, Double Negatives Are A No-No and "I’ll Be The First 18 Stone Man To Ride A Derby Winner" Says X’s New Cellmate! trailed in their wake on 8s.
One of the answers to Q16 was the Cheeky Girls… as mentioned at the Quiz whilst the answer wasn't correct if anyone has a link to a feature film called Seeing Double starring the Cheeky Girls please post a link in the comments section at the end of the post, there are plenty of guys would be interested!
This gave the leader board a slightly different look going into the snack break, 46 Hours And Six Minutes To The Comedy Event Of The Month… It’s Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel, Wednesday 3rd March had jumped into top spot with 42. Black n’ Whites were now in second on 40 and Fairy Dogmother had dropped to third with 39.
We then had our usual five minute break for topping up drinks and sampling the delicious free savouries before it was back to the Quiz and the round that can seriously hamper a Teams progress, Sport. Here’s a couple of examples:
Q24 What is the first event on day one of the women’s Heptathlon?
Q29 Who scored the first ever Premier League hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur in August 1992?
Champs in Sport this week we had Black n’ Whites and "I’ll Be The First 18 Stone Man To Ride A Derby Winner" Says X’s New Cellmate! tied on tens. Fairy Dogmother and Michael Gove Is A Twat came in second on eights each and third went to Rascal Ferrets On Vibes on seven.
The Sport scores gave us a pretty interesting leaders board going into the final Film & TV Round Black n’ Whites were Oscar nominees on 50 but they their Achilles heel judging from their last appearance in Quiz 177 was Film & TV. 46 Hours And Six Minutes To The Comedy Event Of The Month… It’s Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel, Wednesday 3rd March were in the wings on 48 and are always hot in this round whilst the unknowns Fairy Dogmother could gatecrash the party on 47 and with questions along the lines of these who could say:
Q31 In the 2008 movie The Dark Knight which villain is played by Heath Ledger?
Q36 When Spain broadcast the classic comedy Fawlty Towers, what nationality do they give clueless Spanish waiter Manuel in the over dubbed dialogue?
46 Hours And Six Minutes To The Comedy Event Of The Month… It’s Spontaneous Wrecks Live At The Bridge Hotel, Wednesday 3rd March and Nerd Herd were the Oscar winners on the night with nines giving them grand totals of 57 and 48 respectively. Then we had Fairy Dogmother with an eight which meant they finished with 55. Then there were three Teams in third for the round, “I’ll Be The First 18 Stone Man To Ride A Derby Winner” Says X’s New Cellmate!, Rascal Ferrets On Vibes and Black n’ Whites, who were leading the Quiz before the round by two points and now dropped two points to their nearest rivals Spontaneous Wrecks. This could only mean one thing… A Dart Off!
We were running half an hour late by this time due to the late start and the (ahem) Picture Round recount so we decided it was just one round of darts each, highest score wins. We had Vicky who bravely stepped up for Spontaneous Wrecks and David from the Black n’ Whites. David won the toss of the coin but being a gentleman insisted ladies first, so Vicky stepped up to the oche. After admitting she was slightly she didn't do too bad on her first dart with a nine and then it went a bit pear shaped as her next two darts missed the board completely. Unlucky Vicky, the nerves got to you. Up next was David from the Black n’ Whites, all he had to do was beat 9 and with a swift flick of the right arm he sorted that out straight away with an 18 on his first dart.
Well done the man from Black n’ Whites who got a canny round of applause as he and his team decided on who it was that would be drawing the winning envelope. David it was again who took up the challenge, he went for the right hand envelope, struggled to find the slip of paper inside but when he eventually fished it out and unfolded it... he had picked the beers!
There was a bit of a cheer from the assembled crowd as that means we kick off next weeks Quiz with a decent £62 in the pot and another amazing turnout on the night could see us playing for well over a hundred quid!
With the late start, the Picture Round 'glitch', the mass of marking that comes with 12 Teams and a Dart Off we had unfortunately ran out of time so couldn't manage our usual Wild Card Question (it was nearly 11:30pm). Gemma announced we would have two Wild Cards next week to make up… we'll see but hopefully we will be able to fit a Wild Card in at Quiz 210.
With that Quiz 209 was concluded by thanking everyone for turning out and wishing all our quizzers a safe journey home before another entertaining night was brought to a close.
