Come On Down! Agadoo, do, do… and a team cursed. Quiz 296 was a cracking night but did the winners get the dosh?
After a cold but bright day we had a dry but chilly evening with a super moon in the sky. No rain generally means a decent turnout and with a potential £130 plus we had our fingers crossed for a few teams to make it interesting.
As we were nearing 9pm it was looking promising, the back room was full and the bar area was pretty busy as well. After Chris had done the rounds with the Quiz Sheets the good news was with 33 Quizzers in ten teams we had a well decent Cash Prize of £134 to play for. Quiztastic!
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "Come on down!". A couple of Teams had sussed it, our neighbours The Dun Cow had a Quiz with a similar Picture Round the previous week and we had never done anything like it so thought why not. The Picture Round for Quiz 296 was The Price Is Right… match the prices to the items pictured.
The teams were given a few minutes to pore over the prices Picture Round whilst everyone got their beverages in and settled down. We then started the Quiz with our usual first ten questions on General Knowledge. Here's a couple of examples…
Q01. In printing or painting what colour is made by mixing yellow and cyan?
Q08. In a traditional Punch and Judy show what is the dog called?
After the General Knowledge the Teams were given a bit of time to review their answers before the Pics Round and Answer Sheet were called in for marking.
The Picture Round was a disaster for all Teams! On the plus side it made a level playing field but it was possibly the lowest scores for 10 Teams we have ever seen… even the Cheese Picture Round of Quiz 292 got a better spread of scores (I know, 'spread', couldn't resist). Anyway the most Amazon price savvy teams with six from 12 were Ha Ha Merlot and our usual overly verbose Team pushing their upcoming gig We May Not Know The Picture Round But We Know The Price Is Right For Tickets To The Spontaneous Wrecks Last Show Of The Year On Wednesday… Get Your 2 For £5 Tickets Online Now! The rest of the teams got fives and less.
The General Knowledge Round proved a bit more fruitful for our Teams with Universally Challenged, Spontaneous Wrecks and Democracy Is Dead – I’m Back With The Pen! all returning 10 points and Rascal Ferrets On Vibes along with The Colly Wobblers close seconds on nines a piece.
The combined scores gave us Spontaneous Wrecks as the leaders at this early stage with 16 and Universally Challenged, Democracy Is Dead – I’m Back With The Pen! and Ha Ha Merlot in second, third and fourth with 15, 14 and 13 respectively. Not a lot in it!
Next up, the Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from punk rock to doing the Agadoo, do, do…
Q11. Give ‘Em Enough Rope, London Calling and Combat Rock are all Albums by which famous punk rockers?
Q15. Agadoo, Superman and Do The Conga were all top ten hits for which dreadful novelty band way back in the 1980s?
Rascal Ferrets On Vibes had the top tunes this week with a perfect 12 scored. Spontaneous Wrecks were a point off the top of the charts with 11 and The Colly Wobblers did well to get third spot with 10.
So going into the snack break Spontaneous Wrecks had nudged a couple of points further ahead with 27 whilst Rascal Ferrets On Vibes had maneuvered themselves into joint second spot following an excellent Music Round score with a total of 24 along with Universally Challenged.
Next up was the round that can stall a good start, Sport. Here's a couple of samples…
Q21. Which country is to host the next Summer Olympics in 2020?
Q26. In ice hockey, excluding fights, how many players in total and including both teams should be on the ice during a game?
Five Teams managed to tie for Sport this week which is highly unusual… it's normally this round that sorts the challengers from the also rans. Well done to Universally Challenged 2, Spontaneous Wrecks, The Colly Wobblers, Ha Ha Merlot, NUQS – Newcastle University Quizzing Society and Only Here For The Half-Time Snacks who all got 11 from 12. Joint second spot went to Rascal Ferrets On Vibes and Democracy Is Dead – I’m Back With The Pen! on 10s.
The Sport scores gave us Spontaneous Wrecks topping the pile going into the final Film & TV Round on what looked an unassailable lead with 38. Then we had Rascal Ferrets On Vibes on 33, Democracy Is Dead – I’m Back With The Pen! on 32 and The Colly Wobblers 32. Could any of our chasing pack catch the leaders who were five points clear?
Here's a couple of Questions from the final round…
Q31. What was the name of the bear in the children’s TV show Rainbow?
Q36. Which 2013 biography crime movie starred Leonardo DiCaprio as a character called Jordan Belfort?
Although Democracy Is Dead – I’m Back With The Pen! did well with a 12 scored the answer to the question could any of our chasing pack catch the leaders was a no, Spontaneous Wrecks also scored 12 in the final round to win Quiz 296 with an excellent 50 point total (bearing in mind the Picture Round).
Our Teams gave the winners a deserved round of applause as the lovely Gemma gave Spontaneous Wrecks a choice of three envelopes. New team member Casey was given the chance to rid Spontaneous Wrecks of the curse of the Food Vouchers as our teams jointly willed 'Food Vouchers or Beers'. Casey opted for middle, slowly unfolded the enclosed slip of paper and what do you think he announced? Yes… Food Vouchers was Spontaneous Wrecks prize for winning the Quiz yet again. As team member Jon said at the end of the night, Spontaneous Wrecks have accumulated that many Food Vouchers now if Apple would accept them they could be exchanged for an iPhone X. There's always next week guys!
The number of teams to mark, writing out the long team name (Spontaneous Wrecks) and a snapped molar that made reading the questions out the equivalent of speaking with a piece of broken glass in my gob had taken it's toll. We had unfortunately ran out of time for our usual Wild Card Question to finish the night, which was a shame, with 30 odd people there (and Jay) we could have been looking at a decent prize.
So with no time for a Wild Card that was Quiz 296 complete and after thanking everyone for turning out and wishing all our quizzers a safe journey home another highly entertaining evening was brought to a close.
We hope to see you all again (and maybe a few more Teams if we can fit them in?) next week for Quiz 297 where with another canny turnout we could be playing for £160 or more.
