Quacks on TV, orgies and debauchery, live editing Wikipedia plus a Wild Card on the most critically acclaimed show of all time! Quiz 265 wasn't the best attended but it was a good Bank Holiday night out.
After what had been a very quiet and mild Bank Holiday Monday we wondered what sort of turnout we might get. Easter Monday Bank Holiday we were pretty busy with 34 people and eight teams… we had our fingers crossed for more of the same!
As we approached kick off it wasn't looking too good, five teams, 15 Quizzers – was it worth putting it on? Another two quizzers walked through the door and tipped the balance. Okay £37 to play for, let's do it.
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "Multiple transmissions contain quacks". Transmissions are broadcasts, and multiple is also many or a number of. So a number of broadcasts contain quacks, well quack is slang for a Doctor so our quizzers should have got… TV Doctors.
The teams were given a few minutes to look through the TV Doctors Picture Round whilst everyone got the Bank Holiday beers in and settled down. The Quiz then kicked off with our usual first ten questions on General Knowledge. A couple of easy ones first, then as the round wore on they gradually got a little more difficult:
Q02. What is the soft tissue found in the cavities of bones called?
Q09. Depraved Roman Emperor Tiberius, renowned for his orgies and debauchery was allegedly poisoned by which equally infamous heir?
After the General Knowledge the Teams were given a few minutes to check their answers before the Pics Round and Answer Sheet were called in for marking.
Most teams did very well in the Picture Round, in fact all scored 12 apart from one who scored 10 (we won't let on Team Taylor but you got your House and Grey's Anatomy mixed up!).
The General Knowledge Round proved a little more challenging. Team Taylor made up for their Picture Round transposition by jointly winning the first round with a nine along with Spontaneous Wrecks Have Had More Wins In The Last 100 Days Than Donald Trump… SAD! Badly Wrapped Kebabs and blitzed Birthday Boy Richard in a Team with Sarah cunningly called Will You Still Love Me When I’m 64 (That Would Be No!) came in second on eights a piece. Whilst Rascal Ferrets On Vibes managed third with seven.
The combined scores gave us top three at this early stage of Spontaneous Wrecks Have Had More Wins In The Last 100 Days Than Donald Trump… SAD! marginally ahead on 21. Badly Wrapped Kebabs and Will You Still Love Me When I’m 64 (That Would Be No!) were close seconds on 20 whilst Team Taylor and Rascal Ferrets On Vibes weren't far off the pace on 19s each.
Next up, the Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from Monsters And Men to the Hounds of Love:
Q11. From which country do Sigur Ros, Of Monsters And Men and The Sugarcubes all come from?
Q19. Which English solo artist had a 1985 number one UK album with Hounds of Love?
Straight in at number one in Music this week, Rascal Ferrets On Vibes with a massive 11 from the 12 available. A defining score? Will You Still Love Me When I’m 64 (That Would Be No!) were a couple of points behind on nine whilst Spontaneous Wrecks Have Had More Wins In The Last 100 Days Than Donald Trump… SAD! and Badly Wrapped Kebabs came in third on a joint eight.
One of the questions in Music was what is a Hootenanny, I did say I would accept close to the Oxford Dictionary definition but most teams apart from a couple were way out. The definition is "An informal gathering with folk music" so a party with music was acceptable for instance but New Years Eve music was not. Spontaneous Wrecks were having none of it though, they had put Barn Dance and were adamant that it should receive a mark however as they were one of the leaders the decision was not to give the point as Barn Dance was nothing to do with folk music nor was it an informal gathering. Spontaneous Wrecks were a bit miffed but we had to be firm and fair so carried on with the Quiz.
The latest round of scores gave us a top three going into the snack break of Rascal Ferrets On Vibes leading the pack 30. Will You Still Love Me When I’m 64 (That Would Be No!) and Spontaneous Wrecks Have Had More Wins In The Last 100 Days Than Donald Trump… SAD! were close seconds on 29 then Badly Wrapped Kebabs had third spot with 28.
We then had our usual five minute break for topping up drinks and sampling the delicious free savouries before it was back to the Quiz and the round that can make or break a good score Sport. Here’s a couple of examples:
Q23. Which major tennis championship is played at Roland Garros?
Q29. In 1982 which English club won their first and only European cup final?
Playing a blinder in Sport this week we had Will You Still Love Me When I’m 64 (That Would Be No!) scoring a top 10. Rascal Ferrets On Vibes came in a close second on nine whilst Spontaneous Wrecks Have Had More Wins In The Last 100 Days Than Donald Trump… SAD! and Team Taylor were placed third with eights each.
Just before the running totals were read out Spontaneous Wrecks were back at the Quiz Masters table again. Team member Peter had his phone showing the Wikipedia page for Hootenanny which stated it was a Barn Dance… they were determined to get that point! Once more I apologised and stated the Oxford Dictionary definition was all I was prepared to accept. 'Oh well' he remarked as he turned back towards his Team, 'shame that, Jon's just been editing the Wikipedia Page to try and get the point'. Well there's one thing about the Spontaneous Wrecks Team, they are certainly resourceful!
The Sport scores gave us a pretty close top four going into the final Film & TV Round. Will You Still Love Me When I’m 64 (That Would Be No!) and Rascal Ferrets On Vibes couldn't be separated on 39 each. Spontaneous Wrecks Have Had More Wins In The Last 100 Days Than Donald Trump… SAD! were a couple of points adrift on 37 whilst Badly Wrapped Kebabs were outsiders but still in it with 35. However with questions along the lines of these it could be to close to call:
Q32. In the children’s TV series Postman Pat, near which village does Granny Dryden live?
Q35. In 2008s romantic comedy Mama Mia! The Movie, who played Sam Carmichael, the Bride’s possible father?
The final round was close, very close. Of the three leading teams two returned 100% 13s each and one scored 12. It was Rascal Ferrets On Vibes who scored the important 13 though as this took them to an unbeatable 52 points ahead of Spontaneous Wrecks Have Had More Wins In The Last 100 Days Than Donald Trump… SAD! who's perfect final round score got them a total of 50. Will You Still Love Me When I’m 64 (That Would Be No!) with a near perfect 12 got them to second on the night with 51.
So by a solitary point it was Rascal Ferrets On Vibes who triumphed on the night. What would they draw from the three envelopes presented to Team Member Rob. Whilst the assembled crowd were hoping for Beers or Food Vouchers, Rob went middle and managed to draw the £37 Cash Prize!
Up next was the usual Wild Card Question to finish the night.
To enter the Wild Card is just £1 and for that you get a little coloured Post-It, this week a nice dayglo orange (Post-It's once more sponsored by Infinite…), on which to write the answer to a single question. It's a very obscure question so the answer, usually a number or a date, is more an inspired guess rather than something anyone may know.
The winner of the Wild Card is the person who is closest to the answer we have and there is no drawing of envelopes or anything, they get all the money that's been collected in for the Wild Card on the night! Our biggest Wild Card winner to date is Mike H who scored for a massive £61 in Quiz 177.
Top Colly Barman Chris quickly did the rounds getting the £1 entries in and for Quiz 265 we had a paltry £18 in for the Wild Card Prize. Whilst it may have been paltry for a quid stake it was still a decent return! The question was:
In the Film & TV Round we asked a question about the TV Series Breaking Bad?
Created by Vince Gilligan this TV Series originally ran for five seasons from 2008 to 2013. It grew in popularity so much that by the fifth season it was being lauded as as one of the greatest television series ever and entered the Guinness World Records as the most critically acclaimed show of all time.
It truly is a fantastic series, if you haven't seen it you really need to watch it. And with that in mind the Wild Card Question is… if you got the Breaking Bad box set from Amazon and watched the entire series back to back, how many hours and minutes would it take you to complete?
After validating that everyone was in firstly all guesses under 30 hours were binned, then any that were over 70 were junked and that left nearly half the entries in but there were two that were incredibly close and it took some working out! Anna with 44 hours and 36 minutes was 4:33 out and Samuel X with 54 hours 19 minutes was 5:10 off the mark. So by virtue of just 37 minutes it was Anna who won the £18.
With that Quiz 265 was complete and after thanking everyone for turning out and wishing all our quizzers a safe journey home another highly enjoyable evening was brought to a close.
A final thought on Spontaneous Wrecks, despite the determined but good humored attempt to get the additional point for Barn Dance that would have only got them joint second on the night.
We hope to see you all next week, plus a few more (we hope) for Quiz 266 where we start from scratch. So with a decent turnout we could be playing for a Cash Prize of £30(ish)… well it's not the money we play for is it? It's the prestige of winning The Colly Quiz.
