Chanters at the flicks, Joanna Lumley raising lion cubs in Kenya? and a photo finish. Quiz 274 was heaving but it was good kind of heaving on another exciting Quiz night at The Colly.
It was big money! Potentially £330 plus depending on the turnout so we were hoping for a whopping turnout.
After a reasonable weekend the weather held for Monday and we crossed our fingers that, plus the mammoth Cash on offer might tempt a few more teams to join in. As we approached kick off it became obvious we were in for a busy night, the pub was almost full with 15 minutes to go! We started handing the Quiz Sheets and Picture Rounds early as there was so many people and once we counted the entry money we found there was 42 people and eleven teams involved, which took our Cash Prize up to a massive £334.
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "Chanters who made a scene (or two)". Another pretty easy clue we thought? Chanters are singers and you get scenes in films so the Picture Round for this weeks mega money Quiz was name the films the singers pictured have been in.
The teams were given a few minutes to look through the Picture Round whilst everyone got the beers in and settled down. The Quiz then kicked off with our usual first ten questions on General Knowledge. A couple of easy ones first, then as the round wore on they gradually got a little bit harder:
Q05. Of which Mediterranean island country is Valletta the capital city?
*Q10. Which naturalist wrote the famous 1960 book Born Free about a her experience raising three lion cubs in Kenya?
After the General Knowledge the Teams were given a few minutes to check their answers before the Pics Round and Answer Sheet were called in for marking.
Most teams did very well in the Pics Round with eight from the eleven getting the full 12… and I thought it was a pretty difficult Picture Round I had come up with!
*For question ten one of our Teams guessed at Joanna Lumley… which I would have given a point for the comedy value that conjured up if there wasn't so much money at stake!
The General Knowledge Round proved a bit more challenging Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes, So No Film 2017 Then? both topped the scores with 11. New Balls Please, It’s Spontaneous Wrecks 3rd Birthday On Wednesday & Peter’s Birthday Today – So Buy Peter A Pint And Come To Our Show! 8pm Wednesday At The Bridge Hotel and The Trololols were close seconds with tens a piece whilst The Bullsitters and R&R came joint third with respectable nines.
The combined scores gave us top three at this early stage of So No Film 2017 Then? and Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes setting an early pace with 23s each. New Balls Please were tied with Spontaneous Wrecks in second on 22 whilst the The Bullsitters lay in third on 21.
Next up, the Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from Atom Heart Mother to Radioactive:
Q16. 1970s Atom Heart Mother, 1995s Pulse and 2014s The Endless River are all number one UK albums from which perennial group?
Q19. Who got to number 12 in 2012 with the single Radioactive?
Topping the charts in Music this week our new team R&R with an excellent 11 from 12. The Bullsitters were good value for second with 10 and Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes were in at number three with 9.
This gave a top three going into the snack break of Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes leading the pack on 32, the trio of R&R, The Bullsitters and So No Film 2017 Then? in close pursuit a point behind on 31 with Spontaneous Wrecks in third 30.
We then had our usual five minute break for topping up drinks and sampling the delicious free savouries before it was back to the Quiz and the round that can turn a good Quiz bad Sport. Here’s a couple of examples:
Q23. In what sport might you find a bagel a chop and a shank?
Q29. What was introduced into the UK Football League for the first time in the 1981-82 Season?
It was neck and neck for top spot in Sport this week with Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes and R&R both returning full marks of 13. The Bullsitters and Spontaneous Wrecks got excellent scores of 12s a piece for joint runners up in Sport whilst The Trololols made a good fist of the round to come third with a score of 10.
The Sport scores gave us a very tight top four going into the final Film & TV Round, Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes were a point in front on 45, new teams R&R and The Bullsitters were both having a stormer of a first Colly Quiz lying second and third with 44 and 43 respectively and Spontaneous Wrecks weren't out of it on 42. With four bonus points available in the round, making fourteen to play for and questions along the lines of these, it was going to be tight as a gnats chuff:
Q32. In the 2016 action movie Deadpool who plays the role of Wade Wilson?
Q37. What rather unusual surnamed Fred produced the Tom and Jerry cartoons?
What a final round, three teams scored maximum points! New Team R&R, Spontaneous Wrecks and crucially Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes… which meant that winners on the night by just a single, solitary point were Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes with an unbelievable 59 scored. Commiserations to our new Team R&R who couldn't have done any more as they scored maximum points in the final two rounds but they still couldn't overtake our winners who matched them to the end.
It was now down to Team member Jay to draw the winning envelope from the three Boss Freda had fanned out in front of him. He hesitated for a moment as members of the opposition were shouting Food Vouchers and Beers then the pub fell into a collective hush as Jay went middle and slowly opened the folded slip of paper from inside. His startled expression gave it away… Cash Prize he announced as he turned around and went into a mass celebration frenzy with his compatriots.
This gives Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes a second huge Cash Prize win. They have the current record of £450 from Quiz 247 and now a muckle £334 to add to their impressive winnings haul.
What a close finish! The excitement and double checking of the final round scores (as it was so tight) had once more taken us way past time so unfortunately for a second week running we couldn't squeeze a Wild Card Question in, which was a shame as there was 50 odd people in the bar by this stage. We had one final announcement before thanking everyone for coming down, Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes had donated £34 of their prize money back into the pot... what a generous bunch. They then took their remaining booty and went off to celebrate at As You Like It!
So that was that, Quiz 274 was complete and after thanking everyone for turning out and wishing all our quizzers a safe journey home another highly entertaining evening was brought to a close.
We hope to see you all again next week for Quiz 275 where with a decent turnout and Rascal Ferrets On Busy Vibes £34 donation back into the pot we start the rollover off again and could be playing for £60 or more.
