An epic of epic epicness Picture Round, coming from behind and a Wild Card on the first woman to do what in 1977! Turnouts may be either feast or famine at The Colly Quiz but we always have a canny night.
With a pittance of a rollover we weren't expecting a big turnout for Quiz 280 but this is The Colly and nothing is ever that straightforward.
As we were nearing 9pm it was looking great, the place was packed. We knew Jon from Spontaneous Wrecks was away at the Edinburgh Fringe but the rest of his team still managed it and we had our old friends The Idiots and The Laaaads returning for a Quiz night out. It's either feast or famine at The Colly Quiz! Top Colly Barman Chris did the rounds and for Quiz 280 we had 35 Quizzers in nine Teams taking the Cash Prize from a meagre £13 to a decent £48.
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "Short summary in the can". Well in the can is a phrase used when making movies and in the movies a short summary would be the tagline to the film, one or two sentences that summarise the plot. So the Picture Round for Quiz 280 was match the movie tagline to the movie.
The teams were given a few minutes to peruse the Picture Round whilst everyone got their beverages in and settled down. We then kicked off the Quiz with our usual first ten questions on General Knowledge.
After the General Knowledge the Teams were given a bit of time to check their answers before the Pics Round and Answer Sheet were called in for marking.
Most teams did pretty well in the Pics Round but our returning friends Idiots smashed it with a 100% 12 points.
The General Knowledge Round was pretty close as well but Spontaneous Wrecks Aren’t Here This Week Because They Are At The Edinburgh Fringe were the most generally knowledgable with a 12 point 100% score.
The combined scores gave us Spontaneous Wrecks and Idiots as the joint leaders at this early stage on 22 with And In First Place… a close second with 21 and The Academy third on 20.
Next up, the Music Round. Spontaneous Wrecks and The Spinster Sisters nailed this round with excellent scores of 11 from 12.
So going into the snack break Spontaneous Wrecks were racing into the lead with 33, whilst their closest challengers, The Academy, And In First Place… along with Idiots were on 29s… already four points in arrears.
Next up was the round that can put a spanner in the works, Sport. And Spontaneous Wrecks were not just missing Jon, their resident sports expert was also missing, could the other Teams make up some ground?
The answer was yes. Winners by a good length in Sport this week were Richmond Frankfurt with a cracking 100% 12 and The Academy did well to come in second on nine points.
The Sport scores put the cat amongst the pigeons and gave us a very interesting top three going into the final Film & TV Round. Richmond Frankfurt were just in front on 40, Spontaneous Wrecks had dropped to second following their Sport hiccup on 39 and there were three or four Teams waiting in the wings if the leaders dropped points.
It was looking like a Dart Off, the Teams were tightly bunched in Film & TV with one on 11, four on 10s and two on nines! When we collated all the scores though it was Richmond Frankfurt who had edged it with 10 points scored taking them to a total of 50. The Academy had nailed the round with 11 but that took them to joint second on the night with Spontaneous Wrecks on 49. What a close finish!
So there was a round of applause for our winners Richmond Frankfurt (who have won the Quiz before under the Team name The Laaaads) as I gave Team Member Jamie the choice of three envelopes (Top Colly Bar Staff Gemma and Chris were busy with last orders dot dot dot). Jamie went middle, pulled out the slip of paper and announced Beers!
Unlucky guys but that means there's a potential prize of £80 plus next week although you may have to pay extra on the Metro on the way home for the case of Bud (the Team travel to the Colly Quiz all the way from Whitley Bay… respect, appreciate you turning out!)
Up next was the usual Wild Card Question to finish the night. The Wild Card is just a single question with an obscure numerical answer, so it's basically a guess. Everyone who wants a go pays a pound (or £2 if they want a couple of goes) and whoever gets closest to the answer gets all the money in the pot. Our biggest Wild Card winner to date is Mike H who scored for a massive £61 in Quiz 177.
Top Colly Barman quickly did the rounds getting the £1 entries in and for Quiz 280 we had an excellent £34 in for the Wild Card Prize. The question was:
In the Sports Round we asked what Charlotte Brew became the first woman to do on the 2nd of April 1977. The answer was she was the first woman to ride in the Grand National.
She was only 21 when she rode the Grand National on a horse called Barony and they both put in a spirited performance but ultimately failed to finish the race.
The Wild Card Question tonight is what percentage of fences had Charlotte and her horse Barony jumped in the race before they ground to a halt at the 1977 Grand National?
After filtering through the 34 answers it was close, Brendan had 72.6%, Jay 77.7%, Scoop 80% and Lorna 85.2% but the The Wild Card Winner this week, just over one percent off the actual answer of 86.6%, was Lorna.
With that Quiz 280 was complete and after thanking everyone for turning out and wishing all our quizzers a safe journey home another highly entertaining evening was brought to a close.
We hope to see you all again (and maybe a few more Teams if we can squeeze them in) next week for Quiz 281 where with a decent turnout we could be playing for £80 or more.
