A confusion of Castle's, more Wacky Races and a Wild Card on Duffy's Dallas inclusion. Our Bank Holiday Monday Quiz was a belter.
It had been a lovely Bank Holiday Monday with wall to wall bright sunshine. We were hoping that the feel good factor following a decent day off and the lure of around a £90 Cash Prize might draw a few Teams to our Monday Night Quiz.
As we were nearing the 9pm kick off it was looking canny. Spontaneous Wrecks were back to full strength following their stint at the Edinburgh Fringe, Rascal Ferret's were a bit light on numbers but up for it and the usual suspects were in attendance plus a few more unfamiliar faces. After handing the Picture Round and the Quiz Sheets out our top Colly Barmaid Gemma returned with the news that there were 24 Quizzers in seven teams taking the total prize money on offer to £91. Excellent… Quiz On!
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "Keep looking around the kingdom Norman". Well keep, kingdom and Norman should have got you thinking Castles whilst looking around the kingdom was a reference to around the United Kingdom. So put those together and you should have got the Picture Round for Quiz 282 was Famous Castles [from all around the UK].
The teams were given a few minutes to study the Castles Picture Round whilst everyone got their Bank Holiday refreshments in and settled down. We then began the Quiz with our usual first ten questions on General Knowledge.
After the General Knowledge the Teams were given a bit of time to look over their answers before the Pics Round and Answer Sheet were called in for marking.
All the teams did crap in the Pics Round… castles were obviously not their strong point but Spontaneous Wrecks did point out that one of their potential team mates on the night [who pulled out at the last minute] had a doctorate in the management of English Castles! Unlucky.
The General Knowledge Round proved a little less challenging. Spontaneous Wrecks and What’s Phil Come As Tonight were near perfect on 11s each. Connor McGregor’s Blue Eyes and Rascal Ferrets On Vibes scored 10s and Performance Anxiety came in third on eights.
The combined scores gave us Spontaneous Wrecks and What’s Phil Come As Tonight as joint leaders on 17 with Connor McGregor’s Blue Eyes and Rascal Ferrets On Vibes close seconds on 16.
Next up, the Music Round. Spontaneous Wrecks nailed this with a perfect 12. What’s Phil Come As Tonight were a point off perfect on 11 and Connor McGregor’s Blue Eyes were in the running with 26.
So going into the snack break the top three were a carbon copy of the music results with Spontaneous Wrecks in the lead with 29, What’s Phil Come As Tonight hot on their heels with 28 and Connor McGregor’s Blue Eyes in third on 26.
Next up was the round that can wreck a decent start… Sport.
There was no Team playing a blinder in Sport this week, the highest score came from What’s Phil Come As Tonight on a seven whilst Quizlamic Extremists managed a six and Spontaneous Wrecks along with Rascal Ferrets On Vibes trailed in third spot with fives.
The Sport scores gave us an interesting top three going into the final Film & TV Round. What’s Phil Come As Tonight and Spontaneous Wrecks were obvious favourites on 35 and 34 respectively but Rascal Ferrets On Vibes and Connor McGregor’s Blue Eyes were dark horses on 30s a piece.
Well it all came down to knowing the name of the Red Baron's car in Wacky Races… What’s Phil Come As Tonight? knew it but Spontaneous Wrecks, although very close, didn't get it. That meant both Teams finished with 46 points so it was a Dart off!
It's been a while since we had a Dart Off but our Team Members knew the drill. Three darts and the highest score gets the chance of choosing from the three envelopes top Colly Barman Jay had in his hands.
After the toss of a coin it was Peter from Spontaneous Wrecks up to the oche first. A four was followed by another four and then an 18. 26 scored. Not bad (under pressure) but now it was Phil 'The Power' Mac who was up for team What’s Phil Come As Tonight? It was 8, 18, 20 bosh… 46 Scored. Well done to Phil and his Team it was them who had the chance of drawing the £91 Cash Prize. Barman Jay gave Phil the choice of three envelopes. Phil went middle, pulled the slip of paper out, unfolded it and to everyone's delight read out Food Vouchers!
Unlucky Phil and the guys from What’s Phil Come As Tonight? but that means next week we could be playing for £120 plus (and I'm sure your team will be there or thereabouts).
Up next was the usual Wild Card Question to finish the night. The Wild Card is just a single question with an obscure numerical answer, so it's basically a guess. Everyone who fancies a go pays a pound (or £2 if they want a couple of goes) and whoever gets closest to the answer gets all the money in the pot. Our biggest Wild Card winner to date is Mike H who scored for a massive £61 in Quiz 177.
Super Colly Barmaid Gemma quickly did the rounds getting the £1 entries in and for Quiz 282 we had £22 in for the Wild Card Prize. The question was:
In the Film & TV Round we asked which character was played by actress Patrick Duffy in the 1980s series Dallas. The answer was Bobby Ewing.
Bobby was one of the central characters in this blockbuster series that ran for 14 seasons of around 25+ episodes from 1978 to 1991. He appeared in almost every episode of the show apart from an entire season following being killed off in a car accident only to be resurrected the following season with the bizarre explanation that his death and the previous 30 episodes had all been a bad dream. Seriously… look it up.
The Wild Card Question tonight is how many episodes in total did the character of Bobby Ewing appear in over the entire run of Dallas?
The Wild Card Winner this week was Jay who was absolutely spot on with his guess of 327.
With that Quiz 282 was complete and after thanking everyone for turning out and wishing all our quizzers a safe journey home another highly entertaining evening was brought to a close.
We hope to see you all again (and maybe a few more teams) next week for Quiz 283 where with a decent turnout we could be playing for £120 or more.
