Know your Canucks, a new alliance nearly paid off plus a Wild Card on Rowan's patched up McLaren F1. Quiz 283 was another entertaining night at The Colly.
It had been a dull autumnal Monday, threatening rain most of the day (which regulars will know is probably the only thing that has an affect on the Quiz turnout!). We were positive though, there was after all a potential £120 or more to play for so we crossed our fingers.
As we were nearing 9pm it was looking fairly good. Whilst the pub wasn't packed it was nearly full and after Gemma had been round with the Picture Round and Answer Sheets it transpired we had a decent turnout of 31 Quizzers in 8 Teams, which took the Cash Prize to a well nice £122.
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "Canucks of note". Pretty easy we thought… Canucks are Canadians, so Canucks of note are well known Canadians, therefore the Picture Round for Quiz 283 was Famous Canadians.
The teams were given a few minutes to check out the Canadians Picture Round whilst everyone got their libations in and settled down. We then started the Quiz with our usual first ten questions on General Knowledge.
After the General Knowledge the Teams were given a bit of time to examine their answers before the Pics Round and Answer Sheet were called in for marking.
Most teams did very well in the Famous Canadians Picture Round with Spontaneous Wrecks Are Hoping Kim Or Trump Push The Button Before The Sports Round… maxing out with a twelve and five of the other teams scoring 11.
The General Knowledge Round proved a tad more challenging but The Almond Nibblers (& Their Queen) scored a decent 10 whilst Spontaneous Wrecks along with The Hasty Puddings (& Richard) managed nines.
The combined scores gave us The Almond Nibblers (& Their Queen) tied with Spontaneous Wrecks as the joint leaders on 21 at this early stage with The Hasty Puddings (& Richard) hot on their heels on 20.
Next up, the Music Round. Spontaneous Wrecks and The Hasty Puddings (& Richard) won this comfortably with 11s a piece with Rascal Ferrets On Vibes a couple of points behind in second with nine.
So going into the snack break Spontaneous Wrecks were in the lead with 32 scored closely followed by The Hasty Puddings (& Richard) on 31 and The Almond Nibblers (& Their Queen) with 29 in third.
Next up was the round that can ruin a good score… Sport.
The Hasty Puddings (& Richard) romped home as winners in Sport this week with a 100% 12 scored. Rascal Ferrets On Vibes and new team Crap Chris & Phil did well to come second on 10s a piece.
The Sport scores gave us an interesting top two going into the final Film & TV Round. The Hasty Puddings (& Richard) were favourites with a total of 43 after leap frogging Spontaneous Wrecks on 40 into first place. Rascal Ferrets On Vibes were hanging in there with 37 but it looked a battle between the leading two.
Spontaneous Wrecks finished strongly with 12 from 13 to score a total of 52. Rascal Ferrets On Vibes made a fist of the final round getting an 11 but so too did The Hasty Puddings (& Richard) meaning that they had a final score of 54 to win Quiz 283 by a couple of points.
After a round of applause for our winners top Colly Barmaid gave Alex from the winning team the choice of the usual three envelopes. After a bit of cajoling from his Team members he chose middle, fished out the little slip of paper enclosed and after unfolding it announced… Food Vouchers! Unlucky Alex, the £122 goes back into the pot for next week and you the Winners have £15 worth of vouchers to spend on delicious food from The Colly.
Up next was the usual Wild Card Question to finish the night. The Wild Card is just a single question with an obscure numerical answer, so it's basically a guess. Everyone who wants a go pays a pound (or £2 if they want a couple of goes) and whoever gets closest to the answer gets all the money in the pot. Our biggest Wild Card winner to date is Mike H who scored for a massive £61 in Quiz 177.
Our gorgeous Gemma quickly did the rounds getting the £1 entries in and for Quiz 283 we had £25 in for the Wild Card Prize. The question was:
In the Film & TV Round we asked which actor was responsible for the UK’s biggest ever car insurance payout after crashing his 240mph super car into a tree in 2011?
The answer was comedian Rowan Atkinson who's prang reportedly cost the insurance company £910,000. This was the second time Rowan had crashed his McLaren F1 but despite this he still managed to sell the car for £8 million in 2015, making a huge profit on what he paid for the super car way back in 1997.
The Wild Card Question tonight is what did Rowan Atkinson pay for his McLaren F1 in 1997?
The Wild Card Winner this week was Louise T who guessed £640,000 which was absolutely spot on!
With that Quiz 283 was complete and after thanking everyone for turning out and wishing all our quizzers a safe journey home another highly entertaining evening was brought to a close.
We hope to see you all again (and maybe a few more Teams) next week for Quiz 284 where with a decent turnout we could be playing for £150 or more.
