Close ups were odds on, aspartamememe what? and out of time for a Wild Card. Quiz 284 was well busy with a few new faces too.
Winter is coming… well Autumn certainly is. After a wild day of wind, thunderstorms and rain it cleared up late in the afternoon and was quite pleasant going into early evening. We were hoping the lack of rain and improving weather along with a potential £150+ Cash Prize might encourage a few teams to participate in our Monday night Quiz.
As we were nearing 9pm it was looking great, the students were back so there were a lot of new faces in the bar which was refreshing. After top Colly Barman Chris had done the rounds the good news was there were 37 Quizzers in ten teams taking the Cash Prize to a well tempting £159.
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "Good odds but it will be close" and a couple of teams had worked out the cryptic clue meant the Picture Round for Quiz 284 was Betting Firms Logo's… but close up and personal.
The teams were given a few minutes to analyse the Betting Firm Logos Picture Round whilst everyone got their beverages in and settled down. We then kicked off the Quiz with our usual first ten questions on General Knowledge.
After running into pronunciation problems as early as Question 3 (In the food and drinks industry, what is aspartame a substitute for?) we eventually completed the General Knowledge Round. Then the Teams were given a couple of minutes to check their answers before the Pics Round and Answer Sheet were called in for marking.
Most teams did pretty well in the Pics Round with four teams scoring 11 and four scoring ten.
The General Knowledge Round proved a bit more tricky but a trio of teams; Hurricane Hasty, Four Days To Go and Irma – God, What A Great Quiz! still managed excellent tens to win the round. Graham’s Team and the usual overly verbose Spontaneous Wrecks Thinks It’s Too Soon To Make A Hurricane Joke Which Is A Shame Because You’d Have Been Blown Away By It! came in second on nines a piece.
The combined scores gave us Hurricane Hasty and Four Days To Go as the leaders at this early stage on 21 points with Irma – God, What A Great Quiz! and Graham’s Team a close second on 20.
Next up, the Music Round. Spontaneous Wrecks won this with a perfect 12. Following Question 13, Too Good At Goodbyes, released last week, is the first single for two years by which Oscar winning singer? Team Hurricane Hasty spent quite a while discussing the merits of the singer put forward as their answer, mainly because team member Sarah couldn't quite believe he had won an Oscar… "But the song was crap" being her summary of the tune in question! Team Hurricane still managed to come a close second on 11 whilst Irma – God, What A Great Quiz! and Rascal Ferrets On Vibes were joint third on 10s.
So going into the snack break Hurricane Hasty were in the lead with 32 closely followed by Spontaneous Wrecks on 31 after their excellent score in music propelled them into second place. Irma – God, What A Great Quiz! and Four Days To Go were still in the running just a point off second on 30s each.
Next up was the round that can scuttle a good start, Sport. And it did!
Four Days To Go were Championees in Sport this week with a cracking 10 scored. Hurricane Hasty did okay with an eight to run in second and Rascal Ferrets On Vibes scored a seven for third place.
The Sport scores gave us what looked like an interesting top three going into the final Film & TV Round. Four Days To Go and Hurricane Hasty were neck and neck on 40 whilst Spontaneous Wrecks were still a threat in their specialist round on 37.
There were 13 points to play for in Film & TV and Spontaneous Wrecks got every damn one of them… but so did Hurricane Hasty! Four Days To Go, joint leaders coming into the round could only manage a ten so it was Hurricane Hasty who won the nights Quiz with an exemplary 53 points, three ahead of Spontaneous Wrecks.
Our assembled teams gave the winners a deserved round of applause as Barman Chris gave winning team member Anto the choice of three envelopes. The remaining teams were baying for Food Vouchers or Beers as Anto decided on the middle envelope, slowly unfurled the enclosed slip of paper and read out… Food Vouchers!
Unlucky Anto and hard lines team Hurricane Hasty but the good news is you can enjoy your lush Colly Food and come back next week to have a pop at the potential £190+ on offer for Quiz 285.
Unfortunately the combination of ten teams and a slightly late start meant that we didn't have time for our Wild Card Question this week as it was after 11pm by the time Anto drew the winning envelope. We'll try to up our game for Quiz 285!
So after thanking everyone for turning out and wishing all our quizzers a safe journey home, Quiz 284, another busy but highly entertaining evening was brought to a close.
We hope to see you all again (and maybe a few more Teams if we can squeeze them in) next week for Quiz 285 where with a decent turnout we could be playing for £190 or more.
