NFL Brain Buckets! Geordie Boys and a wild card on Needles length? Quiz 336 surpassed expectations for turnout and was a right a good laugh to boot.
As always we didn't have a clue what our crowd might be for our Quiz. If there's a decent Cash Prize it could be less than 20 yet if it's just a few quid in the pot we have had over 40 in. So we waited with trepidation to see how many Quizzers would come through the the door for a potential £60 Cash Prize on a reasonably mild November night. At least it wasn't raining!
As we were nearing 9pm it was looking good, most tables were full, there were some new faces and we also had our friends from Twin Farms over as well (who's regular Monday Quiz had been called off). After top Colly Barmaid, the newly engaged Gemma had been around with the Quiz Answer Sheets and Picture Round there was a healthy 26 Quizzers in eight teams joining us on the night… it was most definitely Quiz on!
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "No Fun Losing touch down field". So the key pointers were the caps on No Fun and Losing (NFL) and 'touch down field' or touchdown and field. So the Picture Round for Quiz 336 was something to do with American Football. It was in fact… NFL Team Helmets.
A couple of our teams helpfully pointed out that there was an error on the Picture Round! An occupational hazard when doing these quizzes three sheets to the wind… we managed to sort it pretty easily by our teams manually amending their Picture Round. Interactive quizzes always spice things up. Tell us in the comments section if you can spot the error.
The teams were given a few minutes to peruse the NFL Helmets Picture Round whilst everyone got their refreshments in and settled down. We then kicked off the Quiz with our usual first ten questions on General Knowledge. Here's a couple of examples…
Q02. What is the collective noun for a group of witches?
Q08. What do we call the science that deals with the motion, behaviour, and effects of projectiles (and firearms)?
After the General Knowledge the Teams were given a bit of time to reflect upon their answers before the Pics Round and Answer Sheet were called in for marking.
Most teams did very well in the Picture Round with five of our eight scoring full marks.
The General Knowledge Round proved just slightly more taxing. We’ve Got Our Own Californian Hottie were on top form with an 11 scored whilst Normal For Yorkshire and Spontaneous Wrecksman: With Great Quiz Power Comes Great Responsibility – RIP Stan Lee both managed second spot with tens a piece.
The combined scores gave us We’ve Got Our Own Californian Hottie as the leaders at this early stage with 23 and Normal For Yorkshire a close second on 22.
Next up, the Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from Geordie Boys to Manchester bands…
Q11. Which football player had a minor hit with Geordie Boys in 1990?
Q13. One Love peaked at number 4 in the 1990 UK Charts for which Manchester band?
Joint one hit wonders in Music this week with 11 scored were Spontaneous Wrecks and Black N’ Whites. We’ve Got Our Own Californian Hottie were at number two with ten.
So going into the snack break We’ve Got Our Own Californian Hottie were still in the lead with 33. Spontaneous Wrecks were second on 31 whilst Black N’ Whites and Houston Helmets couldn't be discounted on 30s each.
Up next was the round that can put a spanner in the works. Sport. Here's a couple of samples…
Q23. Anything else just isn’t tennis was which Wimbledon associated companies advertising strapline?
Q28. Which former Everton player shares the dubious honour of having received the most red cards in the Premier League to date?
Half our teams were top dogs in Sport this week with We’ve Got Our Own Californian Hottie, Black N’ Whites, Houston Helmets and Spicy Devil Dick all all scoring tens. The other four teams weren't far behind either.
The Sport scores gave us an interesting top five going into the final Film & TV Round. We’ve Got Our Own Californian Hottie were probably looking favourites on 43 but they can be a bit flaky on Film & TV. Then we had Black N’ Whites, Houston Helmets and Spontaneous Wrecks all on 40 with Spicy Devil Dick the outsiders on 39.
Here's a couple of Questions from the final round…
Q32. Who was the voice of Mike in the 2001 movie Monsters Inc? Billy Crystal
Q37. In Friends which Academy Award winning actress had a couple of guest appearances as Rachel’s sister?
Spontaneous Wrecks played a blinder in the final round scoring a 100% 13 taking them to a total score of 53 points. Next we had Robin, who after a torrid evening finished on a high with 12 scored in Film & TV to get second in the round. Joining Robin on 12 points for tied second we had We’ve Got Our Own Californian Hottie which took them to a total of 55 points for the night. Although our other teams in contention did well with 11s and 10s there was no catching We’ve Got Our Own Californian Hottie.
Our assembled teams gave the winners a generous round of applause as We’ve Got Our Own Californian Hottie team member Anto was given the choice of three envelopes. He went for the middle one slowly opened the envelope, withdrew the slip of paper from inside, slowly unfolded it and announced… Food Vouchers.
Unlucky Anto but £59 between six is not a great prize anyway, we hope you and your crew come back next week where we could be playing for a more substantial £90+.
Up next was the usual Wild Card Question to finish the night. The Wild Card is just a single question with an obscure numerical answer, so it's basically a guess. Everyone who wants a go pays a pound (or £2 if they want a couple of goes) and whoever gets closest to the answer gets all the money in the pot. Our biggest Wild Card winner to date is Mike H who scored for a massive £61 in Quiz 177.
Our fabulous newly engaged top Colly Barmaid Gemma did the rounds getting the £1’s in and for Quiz 336 we had a canny £20 in to play for. The question was:
In the Film & TV Round we asked what is the nickname of Arya Stark’s sword in Game of Thrones? The answer was Needle.
Needle is well suited to Arya’s slight build and her style of fencing, known as the “Water Dance”, which emphasises speed and agility with a thin, light small sword used in quick thrusting attacks.
The Wild Card Question tonight is how long is Needle from handle to tip... in millimetres?
The Wild Card Winner this week was Alex, who with a guess of 773 was just 4mm off the actual answer of 768. Well done Alex!
Our Wild Card Booby Prize winner this week, with the second most outrageous answer, was Stan Lee guessing a fairly massive sword length of 1462mm to beat the brilliantly named Gemma's Ring Is Lovely who stabbed at a gargantuan 2850mm!
With that Quiz 336 had come to an end and after thanking everyone for turning out and wishing all our quizzers a safe journey home another fun-filled evening was brought to a close.
A final stat. After six years of The Colly Quiz this was probably the highest set of scores ever. Either the Questions were on the easy side or you guys who turned out tonight were pretty clever but we have never seen eight teams all getting over 40 points!
We hope to see you all again (and maybe a few more Teams) next week for Quiz 337 where with a decent turnout we could be playing for £90 or more.
