Savoury Snacks… too easy! Suck what? and a Wild Card on a classic crime fighting duo. Quiz 339 was another cracking night of entertainment here at The Colly.
It was a 'crisp' December evening and not raining for a change. The cash was creeping up slowly with £123 rolling over from Quiz 338. So we were hoping for a reasonable 25 plus Quizzers to take us over the £150 mark.
As we were nearing 9pm it was looking very cherry, most tables were occupied and just before we kicked off we had a group of new faces arrive which required some moving of furniture to accommodate. So without even getting the quids in it was definitely Quiz On!
Our top drink consultant Gemma did the rounds and we had an excellent 35 turnout in eight teams taking the Cash Prize on offer to a well tasty £158.
The clue for the Picture Round on the Quiz Preview this week was "Took advantage of all the 3 for £3 at the supermarket then took 12 rather savoury pictures". Three for £3 at the supermarket is generally bags of half a dozen crisps and taking savoury pictures? Well opening the crisps and taking individual pics of them (I ate the subject matter!) So the Picture Round for Quiz 339 was name the Savoury Snacks.
The teams were given a few minutes to survey the Savoury Snacks Picture Round whilst everyone got their drinks in and settled down. We then started the Quiz with our standard first ten questions on General Knowledge. Here's a couple of examples…
Q01. According to the proverb what should you not teach your Grandma to do?
Q07. What name is given to a ghostly spirit responsible for physical disturbances, such as loud noises and objects being moved or destroyed?
After the General Knowledge the Teams were given a bit of time to review their answers before the Picture Round and Answer Sheet were called in for marking.
Most teams did pretty well in the Savoury Snack Picture Round with One Bush In The Grave and Clown Crisp Von Crisp Fuck scoring maximum 12s and the rest getting 11s and 10s.
The General Knowledge Round proved a bit more taxing. Team Crispy did incredibly well with an 11 to win the round then we had a trio of tens for One Bush In The Grave, Clown Crisp Von Crisp Fuck and Quiz On Your Face.
The combined scores gave us One Bush In The Grave and Clown Crisp Von Crisp Fuck as the joint leaders at this early stage with 22s a piece. Team Crispy were a close second with 21 and Quiz On Your Face were in third with 20 scored.
Up next, the Music Round and this week we had questions ranging from Baby Jane to Grace Under Pressure…
Q14. Which rock and rollers last number one UK single was Baby Jane way back in 1983?
Q17. Exit Stage Left, Signals and Grace Under Pressure have all been top ten UK albums for which rock trio?
Clown Crisp Von Crisp Fuck and the usually verbose Spontaneous Wrecks Have Their Xmas Show On Wednesday… Buy Tickets Or Louise Is Getting A Lump Of Coal For Christmas! were joint Top of the Pops this week with 11s. Rascal Ferrets were at number two with a decent 10.
The Spontaneous Wrecks Christmas Show is on Wednesday 5th December at The Bridge. It's a good night out, get yourselves down!
So back to The Quiz and going into the snack break Clown Crisp Von Crisp Fuck were now in the lead with 33 a couple of points ahead of One Bush In The Grave on 31. Ten points then separated the other six teams.
Up next was the round that can turn a good Quiz bad, Sport. Here's a couple of samples…
Q23. Which ever present Premier League football club started out as Dial Square FC?
Q27. Who is Britain’s most successful Formula 1 driver with five Championship wins?
One Bush In The Grave and Liverpool 1-0 had a photo finish in Sport this week and couldn't be separated on nines scored. The rest of the runners were off the pace on sevens and below.
The Sport scores gave us a fairly interesting top three going into the final Film & TV Round. One Bush In The Grave and Clown Crisp Von Crisp Fuck couldn't be separated on 40s a piece but Spontaneous Wrecks were only three behind on what is usually a near 100% scoring round for them.
Here's a couple of Questions from the final round…
Q35. Which film won the Best Picture Award at this years Oscars?
Q38. In the 1980s crime series Hart to Hart what were the character names of the married couple that dabbled as amateur detectives?
Spontaneous Wrecks did well as usual with 11 scored from the 13 available to take them to a final score of 48. Clown Crisp Von Crisp Fuck who had been so impressive over the previous rounds crashed and burned in Film & TV with a six to come in on a final score of 46. So how did One Bush In The Grave fare? They came second in the round with 11 to give them an excellent total of 50 and win the Quiz for the fourth week in succession!
Our assembled teams gave the winners a warm round of applause as team member Richard volunteered to choose from the three envelopes containing the prize. He didn't mess about and went right, opened the envelope and withdrew the slip of paper. The winners prize… Food Vouchers.
Up next was the usual Wild Card Question to finish the night. The Wild Card is just a single question with an obscure numerical answer, so it's basically a guess. Everyone who wants a go pays a pound (or £2 if they want a couple of goes) and whoever gets closest to the answer gets all the money in the pot. Our biggest Wild Card winner to date is Mike H who scored for a massive £61 in Quiz 177.
Our expert drink server Gemma quickly did the rounds getting the £1 entries in and for Quiz 339 we had a rather disappointing (considering the turnout) £15 in for the Wild Card Prize. The question was:
In the Film & TV Round we asked a question about the early 1980s show Hart To Hart.
The show, which ran from 1979 to 1984, revolved around Jonathan and Jennifer Hart, a millionaire couple who in their spare time liked to dabble at being amateur sleuths. This led them on many adventures and into lots of sticky situations over the 111 episodes but each episode always ended with them catching the villains, solving the case and having a romantic interlude to celebrate.
The Wild Card Question tonight is if you had a few days spare and decided to power watch the entire 29 DVD box set of the five series from Amazon… how many hours and minutes would it take you?
The Wild Card Winner this week was Jon F who guessed 87:13 just 67 minutes off the actual answer of 88:20. A special mention for Anto (RIP The Hasty Puddings) who guessed 89:37, just 77 minutes from glory, to come second. Jon did admit that he based his guess on 45 minutes (per episode) x 111 episodes (83:25) but calculated the answer incorrectly. Unlucky Anto, but for Jon's crap maths you would have had the £15 prize!
Finally it was time to hand out the Booby Prize for the Wild Card. Whoever had the second worst answer got a shot of some old spirit or liqeuor we had behind the bar and couldn't sell. This week it was something called Zwack. The lucky winner of the shot was Harry from the Liverpool 1-0 team who nearly wretched when sniffing the "characteristic perfume combining coffee, herbs and an almost medicinal, eucalyptus note". Anyway, Harry sportingly necked his winning shot then remarked "that was rancid". Fun fact: On Amazon after purchasing Zwack most customers buy Finish Dishwasher Tablets!
With that Quiz 339 was complete and after thanking everyone for turning out and wishing all our quizzers a safe journey home another highly enjoyable evening was brought to a close.
We hope to see you all again (and maybe a few more Teams) next week for Quiz 340 where with a decent turnout we could be playing for £190 or more.
