This month's Live...@The_Colly event features the brilliant folk blues band Holy Moly and The Crackers and the gifted guitarist El Nino Del Toon (AKA Andy Turnbull). As usual the event is free and starts at around 8:30pm. Visit the Facebook Page.
Holy Moly and The Crackers: Signed to Northern Lights Music in January 2012. After only a year of playing concerts in and around Newcastle the band are already making a name for themselves: chosen personally by pop festival heavy weight Vince Powers, they were announced as winners of a national competition – organised by promoters Supajam – to play the main Bread and Roses stage at Hopfarm Festival (headlining – Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Ray Davis etc.) where they drew in the crowds and the accolades. They play a homebrew mix of whiskey galore sea shanties, hillbilly lullabies, bin-fire blues, gypsy dances and spectral soul-searching ballads; all played with a newness and honesty which is perhaps one of the keys to their popularity. Songs such as Down on Time are sure to get the crowd on their feet, while New Orleans Waltz and Devil and the Danube are examples of the band’s ability to write an engaging but contemporary folk narrative to the backing of interesting instrumentation.
El Nino Del Toon (AKA Andy Turnbull): Andy's a Northumbrian guitarist playing and teaching around the country. His influences ring out from Bottle neck blues/ gospel player of 1930's America to the modern-day virtuoso's of Andalusian Flamenco. His love for Flamenco has stuck with him firmly after a stint of 6 months in 2007 in Jerez De La Frontera, Andalusia where he studied the style under Maestro Jose Luis Balao who in fact gave him the name El Nino Del Toon. Andy would later return gesture of respect by naming his band BALAO after his Maestro. Andy plays live music every week as part of the delta blues duo - MONKEY JUNK,but very rarely shows his talents of his Flamenco playing! He is truly an amazing guitarist! Come and see this rare chance to see for yourself!
